Book Proceedings of the Ninth International Dakhleh Oasis Project Conference

Download or read book Proceedings of the Ninth International Dakhleh Oasis Project Conference written by Colin A. Hope and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2020-01-19 with total page 1133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume in the Oasis Papers series marks the 40th anniversary of archaeological fieldwork in the Dakhleh Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert under the leadership of Anthony J. Mills and presents a synthesis of the current state of our knowledge of the oasis and its interconnections with surrounding regions, especially the Nile Valley. The papers are by distinguished authorities in the field and postgraduate students who specialise in different aspects of Dakhleh and presents an almost complete survey of the archaeology of Dakhleh including much unpublished, original material. It will be one of the few to document a specific part of modern Egypt in such detail and thus should have a broad and lasting appeal. The content of some of the papers is unlikely to be published in any other form elsewhere. Dakhleh is possibly the most intensively examined wider geographic region within Egypt.

Book excerpt: The year is 2029. Environmental toxins, industrial waste, harmful dioxins, and biological and chemical warfare have rendered Earth's atmosphere uninhabitable. All unsupported plant life and domestic and non-domestic animals perish. Humans must survive in oxygen enriched domiciles and wear specially designed portable oxygen units. With high demands for fresh air, oxygen supplies are being depleted at a rapid rate. Uprisings, revolutions, and rebellions are commonplace all over the world. Dr. Sigurd Gulbrandsen, genius scientist and head of The Global Environmental Institute, is the mastermind behind Oasis. A scientific and technological wonder, Oasis is a weather machine designed to create chemically treated rainwater. She is believed to be mankind's last hope for survival. Dr. Amy Green is part of an international team of scientists dedicated to making sure the Oasis project is a success. But when a corrupt government seizes control of Oasis and launches her prematurely, the results prove to be catastrophic. Now Amy, along with a team of Earth's greatest minds, must find a way to shut Oasis down and put an end to the ravenous, mutated creatures, whose numbers increase just as steadily as the rising rainwaters, before time runs out.

Download or read book An Oasis City written by Roger S. Bagnall and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattered through the vast expanse of stone and sand that makes up Egypt’s Western Desert are several oases. These islands of green in the midst of the Sahara owe their existence to springs and wells drawing on ancient aquifers. In antiquity, as today, they supported agricultural communities, going back to Neolithic times but expanding greatly in the millennium from the Saite pharaohs to the Roman emperors. New technologies of irrigation and transportation made the oases integral parts of an imperial economy. Amheida, ancient Trimithis, was one of those oasis communities. Located in the western part of the Dakhla Oasis, it was an important regional center, reaching a peak in the Roman period before being abandoned. Over the past decade, excavations at this well-preserved site have revealed its urban layout and brought to light houses, streets, a bath, a school, and a church. The only standing brick pyramid of the Roman period in Egypt has been restored. Wall-paintings, temple reliefs, pottery, and texts all contribute to give a lively sense of its political, religious, economic, and cultural life. This book presents these aspects of the city’s existence and its close ties to the Nile valley, by way of long desert roads, in an accessible and richly illustrated fashion.

Book The Oasis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary McCarthy
  • Publisher : Melville House
  • Release : 2013-06-11
  • ISBN : 1612192297
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book The Oasis written by Mary McCarthy and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vicious and brilliant satire of human vanity from the author of the classic bestseller The Group Long out of print, Mary McCarthy's second novel is a bitingly funny satire set in the early years of the Cold War about a group of writers, editors, and intellectuals who retreat to rural New England to found a hilltop utopia. With this group loosely divided into two factions—purists, led by the libertarian editor Macdougal Macdermott, and the realists, skeptics led by the smug Will Taub—the situation is ripe not only for disaster but for comedy, as reality clashes with their dreams of a perfect society. Though written as a roman à clef, McCarthy barely disguised her characters, including using her former lover Philip Rahv, founder of Partisan Review, as the model for Will Taub. As a result, the novel caused an absolute explosion of outrage among the literary elite of the day, who clearly recognized themselves among her all-too-accurate portraits. Rahv threatened a lawsuit to stop publication. Diana Trilling, Lionel Trilling's wife, called McCarthy a "thug." McCarthy's friend Dwight McDonald (Macdougal Macdermott) called it "vicious, malicious, and nasty." Never one to shy away from controversy, McCarthy's portrait of her generation had indeed drawn blood. But the brilliance of the novel has outlasted its first detonation and can now be enjoyed for its aphoritic, fearless dissection of the vanities of human endeavor. In an added bonus, the renowned essayist Vivian Gornick details in a moving introduction the importance of McCarthy's intellectual and artistic bravery, and how she influenced a generation of young writers and thinkers.

Book excerpt: Do you believe that the world will end on December 21, 2012? Neither did astrophysics professor Ivan Peterson until he saw the irrefutable evidence before him. What started out as an ordinary day for Dr. Peterson quickly turned into a challenge to save the world. With heart-pounding intensity and challenges at every corner, Dr. Peterson must work with the U.S. Military, the President of the United States, a couple of friends, and a visitor from the future to try to save the Earth from destruction. With only days to go before December 21, 2012, and with no clear strategy to save the world from the myriad of possible destructive forces, Professor Peterson must try to prevent a catastrophe. Nothing is as it seems, and everything seems to happen at once. Ivan’s extensive education was no preparation for what he and the others must now face. Which force will destroy the Earth and its people fi rst: a hostile alien race or the increasingly tense nuclear countries of the world, all with their weapons ready to fi re at a moment’s notice?
