Book excerpt: Lexi Forester, a spoiled fourteen-year-old growing up in the suburbs of Northern Virginia, sees her parents' relationship dissolve overnight into a troubled marriage. Two months later, her father, Tom Forester, is killed in a military training accident. Lexi is lost in grief, and she blames her mother for not resolving her marital issues despite her father's loving, contrite behavior. Even then, her mother refuses to poison Lexi's memory by revealing her father's infidelity. A few months later, Cynthia, in a self-medicating downward spiral of grief and guilt, gets into a physical argument with Lexi, who declares that she wishes her mother died instead of her father. The verbal assault cuts Cynthia to the core, and she overdoses on prescriptions and alcohol. EMTs are called. In the aftermath, Lexi must live with her grandparents in Vass, North Carolina, while her mother undergoes psychological rehabilitation in Asheville, North Carolina. Grandparents Rand and Linda Templeton take custody of Lexi and try to help her let go of her anger. They entrust her with caring for their horses, and they take her on rides through the horse trails of Vass, where they talk about integrity, love, empathy, leadership, listening, and other character traits. Jump on the emotional roller coaster in Sage among the Pines to feel Cynthia's anger over her husband's affair and Lexi's grief over losing her father and hostility and indifference toward her mother. Ride through the pines on horseback with Lexi and her grandparents and listen to their wisdom under the tranquil pines. Find out if Lexi learns to let go of her anger, if Cynthia ever forgives herself, or if Lexi absorbs her grandparents' wisdom in Sage among the Pines!

  • Author : Richard Forman
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 032314408X
  • Pages : 644 pages

Download or read book Pine Barrens written by Richard Forman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pine Barrens: Ecosystem and Landscape focuses on the relationship between the ecological and landscape aspects of Pine Barrens of New Jersey. The idea in this book is based from the discussions of Rutgers University botanists and ecologists at the 1975 American Institute of Biological Science meetings, and from the interest generated by the 1976 annual New Jersey Academy of Science meeting, which focuses on the Pine Barrens. This seven-part book starts with a short discussion on location and boundaries of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Part I covers human activities, from Indian activities and initial European perceptions of the land, including settlement, lumbering, fuel wood and charcoal, iron and glassworks, farming and livestock, and real estate development. The next part of the book describes sandy deposits, geographic distribution of geologic formations, and soil types with their ecologically important characteristics. Topics on hydrology, aquatic ecosystems, and climatic and microclimatic conditions are presented in the third part of this reference. Part IV traces the history of vegetation starting before the Ice Age and analyzes vegetation using different approaches, such as community types, community classification according to a European method, and gradient analysis. Plants of the Pine Barrens are briefly described and listed in Part V. The final part illustrates community relationships of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, arthropods, and soil microcommunities. The book is ideal for ecologists, botanists, geologists, soil scientists, zoologists, hydrologists, limnologists, engineers, and scientists, as well as planners, decision-makers, and managers who may largely determine the future of a region.

Book The Essays of Henry D Thoreau

Download or read book The Essays of Henry D Thoreau written by Henry David Thoreau and published by North Point Press. This book was released on 2002-05-05 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoreau's major essays annotated and introduced by one of our most vital intellectuals. With The Essays of Henry D. Thoreau, Lewis Hyde gathers thirteen of Thoreau's finest short prose works and, for the first time in 150 years, presents them fully annotated and arranged in the order of their composition. This definitive edition includes Thoreau's most famous essays, "Civil Disobedience" and "Walking," along with lesser-known masterpieces such as "Wild Apples," "The Last Days of John Brown," and an account of his 1846 journey into the Maine wilderness to climb Mount Katahdin, an essay that ends on a unique note of sublimity and terror. Hyde diverges from the long-standing and dubious editorial custom of separating Thoreau's politics from his interest in nature, a division that has always obscured the ways in which the two are constantly entwined. "Natural History of Massachusetts" begins not with fish and birds but with a dismissal of the political world, and "Slavery in Massachusetts" ends with a meditation on the water lilies blooming on the Concord River. Thoreau's ideal reader was expected to be well versed in Greek and Latin, poetry and travel narrative, and politically engaged in current affairs. Hyde's detailed annotations clarify many of Thoreau's references and re-create the contemporary context wherein the nation's westward expansion was bringing to a head the racial tensions that would result in the Civil War.
