Trial one determined the chemical composition of HFCM relative to low fiber canola meal (LFCM) and canola meal in a completely randomized design using samples obtained from five different crushers. In the second trial, the in situ nylon bag technique was used to determine disappearance of dry matter (DMD), crude protein (CPD), neutral (NDFD) and acid (ADFD) detergent fiber from canola meal, LFCM and HFCM samples derived from five different crushers following 24 h of nunen incubation. The effect of crushing plant of origin on in situ nutrient disappearance in the three meals was also determined. In the third trial, rumen nutrient kinetic parameters and effective degradabilities were determined for the blended canola meal, LFCM and HFCM. In situ disappearance of different amino acids canola meal, LFCM and HFCM following 12 h of rumen incubation was determined in the fourth study. The fifth trial was designed to determine nutrient digestibility coefficients by growing lambs of seven diets containing dehydrated alfalfa and 0, 25, 50 and 75% HFCM or canola meal in a randomized complete block design. Milk yield and composition responses of early to mid lactation dairy cows to diets supplemented with HFCM, canola meal or soybean meal were also determined. Results of the first trial indicated that tail-end dehulling of canola meal resulted in more fractionation of fiber than protein between HFCM and LFCM. Results of the second trial showed differences in CPD and DMD within LFCM and HFCM but not within canola meal samples. However, no meal by crusher interaction was observed indicating that in situ nutrient disappearances in the three meals were consistent across crushers. The relatively high dietary fibre content in CM limit its nutritional value for swine. Canola processing could produce canola co-products with less fibre and greater fat thus increasing its nutritional value. Effects of feeding low-fibre and high-fat canola co-products on pig nutrient digestibility, growth performance, carcass traits, and pork quality were evaluated. In Chapter 3, conventional Brassica (B.) napus and thin-hull B. juncea CM were air-classified to produce low-fibre light-particle fraction and high-fibre heavy-particle fraction and were included at 200 g/kg in nursery diets. Compared with napus, feeding juncea CM reduced average daily feed intake (ADFI), increased feed efficiency (G:F), but did not affect average daily gain (ADG) in weaned pigs. Feeding light-particle fraction increased G:F compared with parent CM or heavy-particle fraction, but ADFI and ADG were not affected. In Chapter 4, napus and juncea CM and their air-classified fractions were fed to ileal-cannulated grower pigs. Apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy (GE) and digestible energy (DE) value were greater in juncea than napus CM, and greater for light-particle fraction than parent CM or heavy-particle fraction. The standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of His, Ile, and Val were greater for juncea than napus CM. The SID amino acids (AA) was greater in light-particle fraction than parent CM or heavy-particle fraction. In Chapter 5, juncea canola seed was extruded and expeller-pressed to produce canola expeller (CE) with 168 g/kg ether extract (EE). Expeller included at 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 g/kg in growing-finishing diets linearly reduced ADFI and ADG, did not affect G:F, linearly reduced carcass weight and loin depth, and linearly increased unsaturated fatty acid content in jowl fat. In Chapter 6, canola press-cake (CPC) with 204 g/kg EE was produced by merely expeller-pressing canola seed. The CPC included at 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 g/kg in nursery diets did not affect ADFI and ADG, but linearly increased G:F in weaned pigs. In Chapter 7, CPC and canola oil were produced expeller-pressing canola seed. True digestibility of fat was estimated to be greater in canola oil than in CPC. The total endogenous fat losses were estimated to be greater for the total tract than ileum. Canola oil inclusion increased digestibility of energy and AA in other dietary components. In conclusion, low-fibre canola co-products had greater nutritional value than conventional CM. Feeding high-fat canola co-products replacing SBM and supplemental fat in swine diets maintained growth performance when dietary glucosinolate profile was acceptable. Formulating swine diets based on NE value and SID AA content minimized the negative effect of feeding canola co-products on pig growth performance.

The new system is mainly built from meta-analyses of large data bases, and modelling. The dietary supply model accounts for digestive interactions and flows of individual nutrients, so that feed values depend on the final ration. Animal requirements account for variability in metabolic efficiency. Various productive and non-productive animal responses to diets are quantified. This book presents the whole system for dairy and meat, large and small ruminant production, including specificities for tropical and Mediterranean areas. The first two sections present biological concepts and equations (with their field of application and statistical accuracy) used to predict intake (including at grazing) and nutrient supply (Section 1), animal’s requirements and multiple responses to diets (Section 2). They apply to net energy, metabolisable protein and amino acids, water, minerals and vitamins. Section 3 presents the use of concepts and equations in rationing with two purposes: (1) diet calculation for a given performance objective; and (2) prediction of the multiple responses of animal to diet changes. Section 4 displays the tables of feed values, and their prevision. All the equations and concepts are embedded in the fifth version of INRAtion® software for practical use.

The book covers five broad issues of livestock nutrition. Chapter one – „Physiology of Nutrition”, is related to the anatomy and functions of particular organs of the farm animals’ digestive tracts, type of nutrients found in the livestock diets, as well digestion, absorption and metabolism of these compounds. An extensive characteristics of most common used in animal nutrition feeds, their processing, feed additives as well as the mechanism of their action are presented in the second chapter – „Feed and Feed Additives”.
