Book Nursing in Diseases of Children Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nursing in Diseases of Children Pediatrics, no less than the rest of scientific medicine, has been making tremendous strides within the last few decades and the education of trained nurses has been keeping pace with this progress. In my lectures to nurses on pediatrics during the last twenty years or so I have often felt the want of a textbook for nurses and I, therefore, welcomed the request of the publishers of this volume that I should prepare such a book. I only wish that they would have permitted me a little more time in its writing and I shall have to beg the indulgence of my readers for the shortcomings it may possess. This being a textbook for nurses and not for the medical student, I have, so far as possible, omitted all reference to points of diagnosis and of treatment, both duties solely of the physician. In its place I have endeavored to write concerning things which the nurse will require in her work and to develop in her the powers of observation. In trying to explain some of the disturbances in the health of the child I have been confronted with diametrically opposite theories. I have, therefore, adopted those which seemed to me to be most reasonable rather than to confuse the mind of the reader by giving too much. There would be no necessity for the protest against tightly closed and ill-ventilated rooms. The starvation for Oxygen, it is true, is much more slow, and it may be years before one sees evidence of the depletion the body is undergoing in cases where the supply is insufficient, whereas the daily demand for food is a crying one that can not be overlooked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mothers and Infants, Nurses and Nursing: Translation From the French of a Treatise on Nursing, Weaning, and the General Treatment of Young ChildrenPopular medical works, or works on domestic med icine, are justly held in slight estimation, not only by the medical profession, but by the more sensible por tion of the community. Were the present a work of this nature, its translation would not have been at tempted by the writer of this; but, finding that the author does not profess to give any directions for curing diseases in children, and that, when sickness comes, he has too much respect for his profession to recommend to half-instructed er ignorant persons the care of the sick child, - that he always stop short in his advice where disease begins, and that his only aim is to show how to bring up children without medicine, to avoid disease not to treat it; finding, also, by actual experience, that the work was of inappreciable value to one young mother, and knowing of no Eng lish or American work which could supply its place, the translator has thought he was rendering a useful service to present this translation to the American public.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Always to have some cross children to care for, often to meet with nu kind and ungrateful parents; that is too hard 1 I own it is hard, - so hard that I would not advise any one whose health is indifferent, whose temper is fretful, or whose spirits are low, to undertake the office of a nurse. Even those whose health, and temper, and spirits are the best, and who have the truest love for children, need something more to help them to bear it. And this something more is the thought that all these bless ings, - tlie good health, the sweet temper, the cheerful spirits, the very lorge for children which you feel in your heart, - are so many great gifts of God, to be used for his glory, for the' good of these little ones, whose Father, as well as your Father, He is, and whose special blessing is promised for every kind act, even for the very least which you do for every sick child in this Hospital.
