Book excerpt: The NSW Protestant school and religious effect: English teachers and beyond explores some effects of religion on the delivery of education in NSW Protestant Schools. Its first purpose is to explore the social implications of the rising phenomenon of religion intersecting with Australian education. Secondly it seeks to evaluate the degree to which some religious goals are being attained in Protestant schools, and to what effect. This thesis by publication first examines the contemporary shift from government to non-government schooling in Australia and religious aspects of the history of 19th Century Australian education in the social settlement of government schools. The research then moves to measurement, suggesting methods for researching religious schools, and drawing on a field sample of 214 English teachers in a mixed method study. Fundamentalism in Protestant schools is then evaluated, as is the practice of text censorship. The theory and practice of teaching literary and Biblical canon in Schools is also studied, and the thesis concludes by observing measureable religious effects, but few great differences between Protestant schools and the general social mien. Rather, I argue that the rise of Protestant schools may be partly attributable to parents seeking to reengage with an old Australian civic middle class consensus, rather than for explicit religious reasons. NSW Protestant schools appear to be just one part of a much broader shift in the Australian way of life: religion in education forming a new fulcrum of beliefs about the state and society, and the citizen-negotiator.

Book excerpt: This book explores the advantages of and challenges concerning Special Religious Education (SRE) in multicultural Australia and argues for the need for General Religious Education (GRE) as well. Through the lens of the most recent scholarship, and drawing on an in-depth qualitative study and specific case studies, the book examines the current debate on the role of religious education within government schools. It addresses key concepts of values education, spirituality, health and wellbeing, and cultural and religious identity. It analyses why it is important to retain SRE, together with GRE, as government policy. It explores highly relevant, controversial and contested issues regarding SRE, including the 30% of Australia’s population who declare themselves as having “no religion”, and brings fresh insights to the table. While secularization has increased in both the national and international spheres, there has also been an increase in fundamentalism within religious beliefs. Events such as the September 11 terror attacks and the more recent mass shootings by white supremacists and eco-fascists in Christchurch, New Zealand, and Pittsburgh and San Diego in the USA are reminders that religion is still a major actor in the twenty-first century. This poses new challenges for the relationship between church and state, and demonstrates the need to revisit the role of religious education within government schools. While the importance of GRE is generally acknowledged, SRE has increasingly come under attack by some researchers and teacher and parent bodies as being inappropriate and contradictory to the values of the postmodern world. On the other hand, the key stakeholders from all the faith traditions in Australia wish to retain the SRE classes in government schools. The book addresses this burning issue, and shows that it is relevant not only for Australia but also globally.

The analysis centres on three formative eras in the development of religious education in each case: firstly, the foundational moments of publicly funded education in the mid- to late nineteenth centuries when policy makers created largely Protestant systems of religious education, and frequently denied Roman Catholics funding for private education. Secondly, the period from 1880-1960 during which campaigns to strengthen religious education emerged in each context. Finally, the era of decolonisation from the 1960s through the 1980s when publicly funded religious education was challenged by the loss of Britishness as a central ideal, and Roman Catholics found unprecedented success in achieving state aid in many cases. By bringing these disparate national literatures into conversation with one another, Stephen Jackson calls for a greater transnational approach to the study of religious education in the Anglo-World.
