Book The Notion of Ditthi in Theravada Buddhism

Download or read book The Notion of Ditthi in Theravada Buddhism written by Paul Fuller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-12-31 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of 'view' or 'opinion' (ditthi) as an obstacle to 'seeing things as they are' is a central concept in Buddhist thought. This book considers the two ways in which the notion of views are usually understood. Are we to understand right-view as a correction of wrong-views (the opposition understanding) or is the aim of the Buddhist path the overcoming of all views, even right-view (the no-views understanding)? The author argues that neither approach is correct. Instead he suggests that the early texts do not understand right-view as a correction of wrong-view, but as a detached order of seeing, completely different from the attitude of holding to any view, wrong or right.

Book excerpt: Buddhism is often the religion that teachers have the least confidence in teaching despite being the sixth largest religion in the UK and being commonly regarded as one of the six major religions to be taught in schools throughout the country. This book explores the beliefs and practices of Buddhism as a lived religion in the UK. This book engages with Buddhist beliefs and practices and provides students and teachers with the confidence to address misconceptions and recognise the importance of beliefs in the lives of believers, in a way that will enable readers to go forward with confidence. Aspects of Buddhism explored include the concepts that form the central beliefs of Buddhism, and then the expression of these beliefs in worship, daily life, and the ethics of Buddhists in the modern day. Each chapter includes authentic voices of believers today and provides opportunities for the reader to consider the concepts and how they can be respected and taught and in the classroom. The book forms part of the Teaching Religions and Worldviews series of guides, each one designed to build teachers' confidence and expertise in teaching a different religion or worldview in the classroom..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings to life the age-old religious tradition of Theravada (literally, “view of the elders”) Buddhism as it is found in ancient texts and understood and practiced today in South and Southeast Asia. Following a brief introduction to the life of the historical Buddha and the beginning of his mission, the book examines the Triple Gem (the Buddha, his teachings, and the community of monastic followers) and the basic teachings of the Buddha in the earliest available Pali sources. Basic Buddhist concepts such as dependent co-origination, the four noble truths, the three trainings, and karma and its result are discussed in non-technical language, along with the Buddha’s message on social wellbeing. The author goes on to chronicle his own involvement as an observer-participant in “the Theravada world,” where he was born and raised. His is a rare first-hand account of living Theravada Buddhism not only in its traditional habitats, but also in the world at large at the dawn of the twenty-first century. He concludes with a discussion on what is happening to Theravada today across the globe, covering issues such as diaspora Buddhism, women’s Buddhism, and engaged Buddhism. The book’s accessible language and clear explication of Theravada doctrine and texts make this an ideal introduction for the student and general reader.

Book excerpt: This book argues that donation is one of the central practices in early Buddhism for, without it, Buddhism would not havesurvived and flourished in the many centuriesof its development and expansion. Buddhist relationship between donors and renunciants developed quickly into a complex web that involves material life and the views about how to attend to it. Buddhist dana`s great success is due to the early and continuing use of accomodation with other faiths as a foundational value, thus allowing the tradition to adapt to changing circumstances.

Download or read book Theravada Buddhism Insight Knowledge written by Tenzin Dawa and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theravada Buddhism Insight Knowledge is intended as an 100-page introduction for the new arrival in Thailand - my country of residence for the past ten years - written more with fluency in reading, comprehension and completion in mind than deep provocative original thought supported by academic research. Buddhism is not a religion per se grounded in faith and obedience to a hierarchical structure of unseen supreme entities. Nothing in the Buddhist teachings threatens a non-believer with eternal condemnation while promising the faithful salvation and eternal life if s/he stays on the long and narrow everlasting obstacle course. Buddhism is seen as a teaching to practice helping people through their lives. Buddhists are free to believe what they wish, analyze and disagree with the 'Blessed One'. Buddhism is tolerant of 'divergent views', wherefore ancient animistic spirit worship including the belief in ghosts, and the fear of ghosts, is ever present. Spirit houses are even found on temple grounds. Buddhism is not a scientific revelation, but, as the reader will learn for himself, an elaborate system of classifications of insight knowledge in the abstract based on insights and truths that are neatly placed into an ordering system. 'Knowledge is truth and can be classified according to right knowledge, or to wrong knowledge and applied in three forms: doctrine, revelation, or personal knowledge, that is, intelligence.'

Book excerpt: Recent history makes clear that the quantum leaps being made in technology are the leading edge of a groundswell of paradigm shifts taking place in science, politics, economics, social institutions, and the expression of cultural values. Indeed it is the simultaneity and interdependence of these changes occurring in every dimension of human experience and endeavor that makes the present so historically distinctive. The essays gathered here give voice to perspectives on the always improvised relationship between technology and cultural values from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Pacific. Book Therav da Buddhist Encounters with Modernity

Download or read book Therav da Buddhist Encounters with Modernity written by Juliane Schober and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although recent scholarship has shown that the term ‘Theravāda’ in the familiar modern sense is a nineteenth- and twentieth-century construct, it is now used to refer to the more than 150 million people around the world who practice that form of Buddhism. Buddhist practices such as meditation, amulets, and merit making rituals have always been inseparable from the social formations that give rise to them, their authorizing discourses and the hegemonic relations they create. This book is composed of chapters written by established scholars in Buddhist studies who represent diverse disciplinary approaches from art history, religious studies, history and ethnography. It explores the historical forces, both external to and within the tradition of Theravāda Buddhism and discusses how modern forms of Buddhist practice have emerged in South and Southeast Asia, in case studies from Nepal to Sri Lanka, Burma, Cambodia and Southwest China. Specific studies contextualize general trends and draw on practices, institutions, and communities that have been identified with this civilizational tradition throughout its extensive history and across a highly diverse cultural geography. This book foreground diverse responses among Theravādins to the encroaching challenges of modern life ways, communications, and political organizations, and will be of interest to scholars of Asian Religion, Buddhism and South and Southeast Asian Studies.
