Book Robber and Hero The Story of the Raid on the First National Bank of Northfield Minnesota by the James Younger Band of Robbers in 1876

Download or read book Robber and Hero The Story of the Raid on the First National Bank of Northfield Minnesota by the James Younger Band of Robbers in 1876 written by George. S. Huntington and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounts of bank-robberies and other exploits of outlaws and desperadoes are usually supposed to belong to the criminal-news columns of the daily paper and to the writer of sensational literature. When the robber is the only or the principal actor in the scene, and his prowess or brutality the only feature worth mentioning, the less said of it the better. But when a great crime is the occasion of great heroism, courage, fidelity, intrepid resistance, and the triumph of virtue over violence, then there is a story worth telling, and a lesson worth learning. It is such a story that is unfolded in the following pages. The attempted robbery of the Northfield bank, the refusal of Mr. Heywood to open the safe, his brutal murder by the baffled robber, the brave and successful fight made by the citizens, the flight, pursuit and capture of the bandits,Ñall this was familiar enough to the whole nation eighteen years ago. But such events easily pass from the recollection of men; while to a generation of young people now growing up it has never been known. To some of us it has seemed, therefore, that the time has come to tell the story again, not from the sensational point of view, but from that of heroism and loyalty to duty. The aim of the author has been to give a correct account of the facts involved, and leave them to convey their own lesson and inspiration. Revolting details have been omitted. All important statements are made upon the authority of eye-witnesses, where such testimony was accessible, and in most cases by the collation of a number of independent accounts.

Book Robber and Hero

Book excerpt: This book was written to honor those who helped spoil the Northfield Minnesota bank robbery by the James, Younger gang. Joseph Heywood the man who refused to open the vault, was the hero of the day, but it cost him his life. On September 7th, 1876, The James-Younger gang attempted to rob the Northfield bank. There were 8 members of the gang, consisting of Frank and Jesse James, Cole, Bob, and James Younger, Charles Pitts, Clel Miller, and William Stiles. Three members entered the bank, while two waited outside. The other three were reserves. Once the bullets began to fly, the five members outside rode up and down the street shooting in an attempt to keep the citizens inside. The citizens armed themselves and fought back. Miller and Stiles were left dead on the street, while the others rode off. One week later, the gang split-up, and Frank and Jesse crossed the Minnesota line into South Dakota and escaped. On the 21st, two weeks after the robbery, the Youngers and Charley Pitts, were found and in the shoot-out, Cole received 11 wounds, James 5 wounds, and Bob was shot in the chest. Pitts was killed. The Youngers recovered and pled guilty to avoid the death sentence. They refused to name the Jameses as the two who escaped. Bob died in prison in 1889, and as of the publication date of this book (1895) Cole and James had yet to be paroled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank and Jesse James, the infamous brothers from Missouri, rode with marauding Confederate guerrillas during the Civil War. Having learned to kill and raid without compunction, they easily transitioned from rebels to outlaws after the war, robbing stagecoaches, banks and trains in Missouri and surrounding states. It was a botched bank robbery in Northfield, Minnesota, followed by an improbable escape through the Dakota Territory and Iowa, that elevated the James brothers from notorious criminals to legendary figures of American history and folklore.

Book The Northfield Raid

Download or read book The Northfield Raid written by Northfield News Inc. and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northfield Raid, first published in 1933, is a brief account of the infamous attempted robbery by the James-Younger Gang of the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota. Following the Civil War, Cole Younger, along with his brothers Bob and Jim, robbed banks and trains with Frank and Jesse James and other members of the James-Younger Gang. The robbery attempt in Northfield on September 7, 1876 would prove to be the last of Cole’s exploits. When members of the gang rode into Northfield, they wore flowing dusters to conceal their guns. Once inside, they dropped their coats and demanded the money from the vault. Joseph Lee Heywood, the bank clerk on duty, was killed when he refused to open the safe. When the townspeople were alerted and resisted the robbers, the gang dropped everything and fled. In the melee that followed, Nicholas Gustavson, a town resident, was killed, as were gang members Clell Miller and William Stiles. The pursuit of the gang went on for weeks and covered a large area, during which time the gang split up and managed to get away. The Youngers were eventually captured at Madelia, Minnesota, in another gun battle; gang member Charlie Pitts was killed. The three Younger brothers were tried, found guilty of murder, and sentenced to life in the state prison at Stillwater. Bob Younger died in prison in 1889; Jim was pardoned in 1901 and committed suicide in 1902; Cole, also pardoned in 1901, died in 1916. Cole served his time as a model prisoner. Included are 13 pages of illustrations.

Book The Last Ride of the James Younger Gang

Download or read book The Last Ride of the James Younger Gang written by Sean McLachlan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the beginning of the end for the James gang. In the past ten years Frank and Jesse James had gone from unknown ex-Confederate guerrillas to the most famous outlaws in the world. A string of daring robberies of banks, trains, and stagecoaches had brought them fame, admiration, hatred, and a surprisingly small amount of wealth. In 1876 they planned their most daring raid yet-to ride hundreds of miles from their home state of Missouri to rob the First National Bank at Northfield, Minnesota. This book will tell the story of one of the most daring bank jobs in American history. With most of the gang being former bushwhackers, they used many guerrilla tactics in the planning and execution of the raid, yet failed because of poor discipline and their own fame, which meant that every town in the Midwest had their guns loaded waiting to fight off bandits.

Book The Last Hurrah of the James Younger Gang

Download or read book The Last Hurrah of the James Younger Gang written by Robert Barr Smith and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So small it had only one bank, so quiet no citizens carried guns. Hard-working, peaceful Northfield, Minnesota, was an orderly yet busy mill-town in the heart of prosperous farm country. On a serene autumn Tuesday in 1876, local shopkeepers, farmers, and citizenry went about their normal routines, little realizing that the infamous and deadly James-Younger gang had designs on tiny Northfield. The experienced robbers planned to target the single bank, which held the hard-earned money of the townsfolk. Jesse and Frank James and the Younger brothers had never experienced defeat. During a wild gun battle that raged between the outlaws and the bankmen up and down the town’s main street, two unarmed townsfolk were murdered. Northfield’s angered populace fought back. The townspeople killed two members of the James-Younger gang and wounded several more. The remaining bandits fled but were pursued across southwestern Minnesota by a posse that gradually grew to more than a thousand men. In Last Hurrah of the James-Younger Gang, Robert Barr Smith debunks the James-Younger "Robin Hood" image and shows that the real heroes of the Northfield raid were the ordinary people--the bankers who protected their depositors at their own risk, the townspeople who pitched in to chase the gang from town, and the posse members who pursued and triumphed over the retreating remnants of the gang.

Book The Story of Cole Younger

Download or read book The Story of Cole Younger written by Cole Younger and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1903 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many may wonder why an old "guerrilla" should feel called upon at this late day to rehearse the story of his life. On the eve of sixty, I come out into the world to find a hundred or more of books, of greater or less pretensions, purporting to be a history of "The Lives of the Younger Brothers," but which are all nothing more nor less than a lot of sensational recitals, with which the Younger brothers never had the least association. One publishing house alone is selling sixty varieties of these books, and I venture to say that in the whole lot there could not be found six pages of truth. The stage, too, has its lurid dramas in which we are painted in devilish blackness. It is therefore my purpose to give an authentic and absolutely correct history of the lives of the "Younger Brothers," in order that I may, if possible, counteract in some measure at least, the harm that has been done my brothers and myself, by the blood and thunder accounts of misdeeds, with which relentless sensationalists have charged us, but which have not even the suggestion of truth about them, though doubtless they have had everything to do with coloring public opinion. In this account I propose to set out the little good that was in my life, at the same time not withholding in any way the bad, with the hope of setting right before the world a family name once honored, but which has suffered disgrace by being charged with more evil deeds than were ever its rightful share.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1870s, outlaws Jesse James, Cole Younger and their brothers are granted amnesty by the Missouri legislature, sympathetic to the troubles created for all citizens by the American Civil War. The bankers victimized by the James and Younger gangs are vehemently opposed to this action and hire a Pinkerton agent to follow the outlaws' every move. Younger has put aside plans to rob a bank in Northfield, Minnesota, said to be the largest west of the Mississippi River. The job appeals, however, to Jesse and Frank James, who have no intention of changing the way they make a living. Cole is ambushed by the Pinkerton's agent men, who use a prostitute as bait. And when the bankers succeed in overturning the amnesty by bribing the politicians, Cole travels by train to Minnesota to check out the bank. Once there, Cole discovers that townspeople are unwilling to risk placing their money in the bank due to concerns over its safety from thieves. Jesse, Frank, and their men arrive on horseback and, together with Cole, persuade the locals that a gold shipment is on its way, being delivered to the bank because it is supposed to be the safest possible place for it. Once the citizens begin banking their money, the robbery commences. Many things go wrong though, including one outlaw being locked inside a vault. Younger and his men flee to a nearby farm, but a posse tracks and apprehends them. The James brothers get away. But, when Jesse mentions to Frank his intention to permit Bob Ford to join the gang back in Missouri, his fate is sealed. (Fully Illustrated)
