Book The Northern Yellowstone Elk Debate

Book excerpt: Which management strategy, intervention or nonintervention, is best for the northern elk herd of Yellowstone National Park? This question was first raised in the early part of the twentieth century and resurfaced in the 1960s, prompting controversy that continues today. In response, Congress in 1997 requested that the National Academy of Sciences study the issue. This paper examines relevant National Park Service history and policy regarding this debate. Some of the primary factors scientists think have influenced elk abundance and distribution are profiled, and inherent semantic problems are examined. The 1969 natural regulation hypothesis, which has governed Yellowstone park policy since 1967, and its associated assumptions are defined. The interrelated technical issues that are key to the natural regulation hypothesis include migration and outside land conversion, historical elk population size, range expansion, baseline conditions, population stability, Native Americans, predation and fire, and sport hunting. In his paper he also revisits an obscure 1917 scientific hypothesis-that landscape alteration outside Yellowstone influences elk abundance inside the park-and restates it in broader, more modern terms: national park size influences the need for management intervention because of alteration of natural processes outside park boundaries. Some scientists perceive that intervention in the management of national park natural resources has decreased since 1872. Thus, this paper also asks whether the need for intervention is increasing as large spatial scale natural processes are progressively impeded outside the parks. Looking at the range of park natural units as a whole, a mixture of intervention and nonintervention may be the best approach.

Book Yellowstone s Destabilized Ecosystem

Download or read book Yellowstone s Destabilized Ecosystem written by Frederic H. Wagner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wagner, one of our most distinguished wildlife biologists, is a strong critic of ecological practices in the national parks. This book provides an assessment of the ecological history of Yellowstone's northern range, since before the park existed, showing the impact of US Park Service policies on the health of the areas they oversee. He demonstrates that elk had been historically rare throughout the region and that overgrazing by elk has seriously degraded the landscape and altered the structure of the area. This is a major contribution to reconstructing the ecology of this region over the course of the past 500 years. It is also a critique of US Park Service management policies and their stewardship of the nation's most cherished natural areas. Wagner's book will generate substantial attention and debate both in the scientific and policy/management communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an outstanding treatise on one of America’s most widely hunted and most important big-game animals. Although thousands of sportsmen take to the field each year in quest of trophies, the perpetuation of elk hunting in America depends entirely upon proper management of the herds. Whether management succeeds or fails in future years will depend upon how well the public understands the problems of the game administrators and of the animals themselves. Everything the sportsman or naturalist would wish to know about the elk in included in this new volume. Habits, food preferences, seasonal movements, anatomy, antler development, and management problems are interestingly and thoroughly discussed. Written by one of America’s greatest field naturalists, this new book has behind it a lifetime spent in intimate study of the subject. Dr. Murie is recognized as the world’s foremost authority on the American elk and his comprehensive research on elk in the Jackson Hole National Monument forms the basis for this book. Everyone interested in America’s wildlife will want this volume in his library. The book is copiously illustrated with half-tone and original line drawings by the author.

Book The Wolves of Yellowstone

Download or read book The Wolves of Yellowstone written by John Weaver and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical records and intensive field surveys 1975-77 provided information on the population history, ecology, and current status of wolves (Canis lupus) in Yellowstone National Park and vicinity. Wolves occurred in unknown but seemingly low densities during the latter 1800s in several areas of Yellowstone where they were controlled periodically until 1926. Populations apparently began increasing about 1912, primarily in the northeast, and may have reached nonequilibrium levels of 30-40 animals (postwhelping). Intensive control 1914-26 removed at least 136 wolves, including about 80 pups. During this period Yellowstone wolves characteristically lived in packs of 3-16 members, some of which followed the ungulates in their seasonal migrations. Litters averaging 7.8 were born in late March and April, primarily in the north central sector of the park. Limited evidence suggests that elk (Cervus elaphus) were important food for wolves during all seasons. Wolves either survived the control era or moved in shortly thereafter for singles, pairs, and a pack of four were reported the following decade. Resident wolf packs, however, were eliminated from Yellowstone National Park by the l940s. Large canids have been sighted intermittently to the present, but their identity has not been established. Singles and pairs comprised 89% of 116 "probable" reports over the past 50 years. Speculation about factors limiting the Yellowstone wolf population considers its relative geographic isolation from viable wolf populations and possible genetic problems (including wolf-coyote hybridization) associated with prolonged minimal population status. A transplant of wolves from British Columbia or Alberta, or perhaps Minnesota, is recommended to restore a viable population of this native predator to Yellowstone National Park.
