Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northern Barrage (Taking Up the Mines) Almost simultaneously with the commencement of minelaying the British Admiralty had shown signs of anxiety as to what means could be employed to render vessels safe which might be required to clear a passage through the barrage in case of a fleet action or when it should become necessary to clear away the mines after the war. On June 29, 1918, the Admiralty had inquired of the Commander of the United States naval forces in European waters if any method had been devised for protecting our ships. He knew of none, and after cabling the Bureau of Ordnance, referred the problem to the mine force, United States Atlantic Fleet, who were then in Inver ness, Scotland, engaged in laying the barrage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yankee Mining Squadron: Or Laying the North Sea Mine Barrage The whole account is based on data obtained at first hand. The description of assembling the squadron for a mining excursion fits the third excursion rather than the first, but the difference is a minor one, affecting only the numbers present - six ships on the first excursion, ten on the third. All the rest is correct, in sub stance and details. Besides in uencing an early armistice, this great minelaying operation marks an epoch in the use of submarine mines in war fare. It was an event in military history, as well as a prominent operation, and the credit for it belongs not alone to the officers and men who were actually present but also to those of the old mine force, to whose services in developing, in our navy, the art of handling and laying mines in large numbers, the success of the great operation was so largely due. Book Tin Ensign

Download or read book Tin Ensign written by John Potwin Corrigan and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the inside story of one of the most important naval campaigns of WWI. It describes the action - on the scene - of one single unit of the U.S. Navy; the U.S. Mine Force Number 1, known as the Yankee Mining Squadron. Number 1 was assigned to the task of planting a belt of submarine mines across the North Sea, from Scotland to Norway, to cut off the entrance and return U-boats to their bases in German. From an entry in the personal log of Ensign John P. Corrigan, U.S.S. Saranac, Sept. 19, 1918, we learn that "..the 'Limeys up ahead opened fire off their starboard beam, shots hitting at about 5 or 6 hundred yds. distance. Could not see the beggar from where we were. Frisco suddenly breaks out Green Flag though, we follow suit, destroyers cut loose and make for a spot right abeam about 1000 yds., drop a barrage of about thirty depth charges and open up on their smoke screen, beautiful maneuver. Frisco signals all hands to do likewise, so we add our own little stink to the celebration. We were quite close astern of the Frisco, about 300 yds., and sure got a beautiful smoking. Frisco then comes through with the 'Red Flag, ' began to look like a general attack, great stuff. Only three destroyers had remained on port side but opened up with their depth charges and smoke screen and the way some of the others came crashing through from the starboard side to assist was something fine to see ..." The mine planting of the North Sea. John Corrigan was there. For almost two years he was a part of America's campaign to smash the back of the German U-boat threat. They called these young officers "90-day wonders" or "tin ensigns"--Kids, most of them, who left their jobs, schools, and families to answer their country's call. Ensign Corrigan remembers it well - the anxious beginnings, the desire for choice assignments, the thrill of naval warfare, the queasy monotony of many days of bad weather, and the sickening dread of going to sleep with the knowledge that your ship was loaded with tremendously powerful mines. John Corrigan of the Saranac and John Walton, Jr. of the Canandaigua kept a detailed record of their experience. This book is the fascinating distillation of those records - history with a personal touch. Corrigan and Walton tell it as it really was - the serious side and the light side. This book is of great historic value. It supplies a wealth of information to scholars and students of history, and it will be a welcome addition to libraries and military archives. For those old enough to have shared the thrilling moments, it will be a nostalgic remembrance that will be treasured forever."
