Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Shore of Massachusetts 0 those who live in Boston and its Vicinity the North Shore of Massa chusetts, or The North Shore, as it is al ways called, has come to have an identity as a summer-resort quite as distinct as that of Bar Harbor, Newport, or Lenox. Even New Yorkers, enlightened as to its advan tages by those who go down to the sea in yachts, have learned to think of it respect fully as a very pretty place to which Bos tonians who wish to keep cool, and yet be able to see the gilded dome of the State house through a telescope, hie themselves from June to October. One would sup pose that its accessibility, its coolness, its freedom from either democratic or plutocratic crowds, and the unique com bination of the seaside and the country fore this the people from large cities who wish to be comfortable without being de voured by mosquitoes, to be cheerful without having to be riotous, to get enough to eat without being obliged to fight for it, and to sit on their piazzas without exposure to kodaks, picnickers, or surf flirtation. And yet the comfort seeking public still passes it by in favor of abandoned farms, sylvan camps, islands on the coast of Maine, and the various other refuges from the life of the average sum mer watering-place. Perhaps the reason is to be found in the argument that it is too near Boston, which is a polite way of expressing reluctance to invade the sacred precincts of the most critical society in America for fear of not pleasing. If such be the case, this attitude of caution acts as a two - edged sword, for if there is any plea to be urged against the attractiveness of the North Shore it is that the society is so exclusively Bostonese. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who Along the North Shore of Massachusetts Bay The North Shore has continued to add to its many attractions. It has opened up many miles of woods roads that must be seen to be appreciated. It is impossible to describe the joy one feels in strolling through these Shady lanes which wind in and out among the hills, through the vales and across little rustic bridges which span tiny streams gliding between mossy banks and grassy hummocks away to the sea. The North Shore has an unrivalled position as a summer resort. It not only has the bold, rugged Shore front that is lashed by the billows of the Atlantic but it possesses a wealth of verdure of evergreen and deciduous trees which cover every hill as far as the eye can reach and extend to the very waters edge. He spent a part of his time there, but most of it, the Whole of the succeeding sum mer and fall, in cruising about the islands in Boston harbor - occasionally landing to procure fresh provisions and water, but never making a long visit. He and his associates literally lived on the water for more than six months, almost always find ing safe anchorage as the night approached, and never meeting with the least accident. They were known as the floating family. Hog Island, however, appeared to be the favorite resting place of Mr. Marsh at this time, whenever he landed any where with his family. His movements were noticed by the owner of that island, as well as by others, and he was finally ordered off, lest he might become a permanent squatter. He quietly submitted to the mandate of Mr. Breed, and sought a resting place elsewhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Colonial Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Colonial Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Mary Schuyler Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Massachusetts For seven years, from the age of 14 to 21, I sailed in and out of Boston Harbor and gazed with awe and admiration upon Bunker Hill monument, as I saw it rise above the waters of Massachusetts Bay or sink beneath the horizon, as our little fishing vessel sailed to and fro on the very waters over which the Mayflower came. For eleven years, as Superintendent of Schools, I lived almost within the shadow of that monument. Faneuil Hall; the old State House; the old South Church; North Church; the Charlestown Shore; Concord and Lexington; the rude bridge that spanned the flood; Salem; Provincetown Harbor; Plymouth Rock; State Street; Dorchester Heights; Battery Wharf these all became a part of my life through personal associa tions, While I lived over in imagination the scenes and events that gave them their place in American History. Bradford, Alden, Standish; Hancock, Franklin, Adams; Otis, Paul Revere, General Warren - these seemed like living men. I knew them. That the pupils might gain something of the patriotic impulse that comes through personal association with historic scenes and events, I outlined a series of historic excursions, or field days, to be taken by all seventh and eighth grade pupils, as part of their grammar school course. This was for pupils living in the vicinity of Boston. Such a meansof teaching is not available for the children of Ohio. To help meet that need, however, to some extent, the present monograph - the third in the series of Colonial Studies has been provided by the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Ohio, and is offered to the school children with the h0pe that through its reading they may obtain a clearer idea about the colony of the Pilgrims and Puritans, and may come to have a deeper appreciation of the suffering they endured and the sacrifice they made; and most of all that through these clearer ideas and deeper appreciation the children of today may become more devoted to America and more willing to live for and, if need be, die for - the things for which America stands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Memories of Old Haverhill: In Massachusetts But still the fire upon the hearth burns on, And I alone remain. When the house was built it arose amid an or chard of fruit trees. Forty acres of bloom and scent lay on the slope between it and the glinting, dimpling Merrimac. Peach and plum, pear and apple, apricot and quince, in season gave bloom and in season fruit. Between it and the town, along the river, stretched a short mile of pasture land where the violets bloomed and the luscious black berry trailed and myriad swallows built their caverned homes in high sand banks. Little the builders dreamed that the factory and the tenement house would devastate this Arcady, and alien races dwell in crowded tenements where then the kine chewed the cud of content in sun-kissed but soli tary stretches.
