Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Riding of Yorkshire Yorkshire is of so great extent that it is not surprising to find that it has from very early times been treated as three separate counties. Each Riding has its own Lord - Lieutenant and its Own county Offices; and, though the City Of York is, for some purposes, the capital of the whole, each has its own county town. That for the North Riding is Northallerton. The English kingdoms that were founded in our island after the departure Of the Romans could not, in those days Of difficult travelling, be properly governed from one point. They were therefore divided into shares or sbires, roughly according to the number Of men able to fight; and the men Of these Shires were themselves answerable for most duties of government. Yorkshire was a portion skarn Off (the derivation Of the word is the same as that Of shire) by the wedge Of Bishop's land, the county of Durham, from the great kingdom of Northumbria. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit, Character, Folklore Customs of the North Riding of Yorkshire: With a Glossary of Over 4, 000 Words and Idioms Now in Use The chapter on some characteristic sayings of both the North and East Ridings, kindly contributed by the Rev. M. C. F. Morris, will add greatly to the value and interest of the work. I may here mention that he is in no way answerable for any other single sentence throughout the work. I feel it to be my duty to make this quite clear, for, as a humorist, I have ventured to include certain items which the reverend gentleman most probably would have run his pen through, had either the ms. Or proof-sheets passed through his hands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The North Riding Record Scoiety Vol 8

Download or read book The North Riding Record Scoiety Vol 8 written by Great Britain Court of Quarter S Peace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Riding Record Scoiety, Vol. 8: For the Publication of Original Documents Relating to the North Riding of the Country of York I have ascertained quite enough to assure me that a veritable Moat Hill, of unknown antiquity and very considerable dimensions, with deep moat and strong earthwork surrounding it, has existed there, and is in part trace able by its remains. But as to its original dimensions, or how much of it precisely remains, or of the way in which, or the probable time when, or the reason why, it has been built upon, defaced, or mutilated, I have no exact, or more or less scientific, information. Neither have I any measurements but I am led to infer that it was originally of no inconsiderable dimensions, and, from what I am told, there may be some difficulty in ascertaining enough that is assured to enable one to make the necessary calculations. Far too little is known of these most interesting memorials of the past, and especially of those still extant in the North Riding. I inspected a very fine and perfect example, situate in Aysgarth parish, shortly after the note referred to above was written and, much more recently, I have examined another good instance, situate at the western extremity of the Mulgrave woods. In the former of these the interior mound did not greatly overtop the height of the encircling ring or earthwork. In the latter the superior eminence of the mound was conspicuous if not striking. There is a list of such Objects named as occurring within the limits Of the North Riding, enumerating sixteen in all, given in the Archaeological Review for last year, No. 183. Of these, seven, to my personal knowledge, are not moated mounds at all. One of them, indeed, is a geological formation, and of considerable interest in its own connection, as well as from its name and the legitimate inferences which not only may be, but must be, founded upon it. Four others are simply grave-mounds of no very great dimensions. One is not a mound in any sense; and yet another, in my own parish, so far from being a moated mound is not a mound at all, and could never have been moated round because of its position at a nab-end. And, besides all this, I am more than doubtful about the real character of two or three of the Others included in the enumeration. This statement alone is sufficient to show what need there is for careful and accurate observation, and for the like care and exactitude in recording its results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the North Riding At the time Of which I write - date quite recent the whole of this ecclesiastical estate Of Cornborough' was in a most dilapidated condition. The church itself, an unsightly compound Of Norman and Early English architecture, with a square battlemented tower and common casement windows, owed what ever outward attractions it possessed to the ivy which covered it. The chief characteristics of the interior - dirt and damp, high pews and white washed walls, and the three-storied piece Of car pentry known as clerk's desk, reading-desk, and pulpit - are not so uncommon as to need minute description. Book excerpt: Excerpt from About Yorkshire The people are most interesting; they are almost always kind and genial, full Of a quaint racy humour, and, Spite Of their proverbial thrift, hospitable to strangers. The dialect differs in the three Ridings; it is not easy to understand, but even when unintelligible there is in it a quaint mellowness Of sound in perfect keeping with the comfortable well-kept cottages, nestling two and three together under a tree, or with the large gray farm steads, surrounded by golden ricks, of which we got glimpses in our journeys through the broad dales that are such distinctive features Of the county. Book Dialect Glossary of Over 4 000 Words and Idioms

Download or read book Dialect Glossary of Over 4 000 Words and Idioms written by Richard Blakeborough and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dialect Glossary of Over 4, 000 Words and Idioms: Now in Use in the North Riding of Yorkshire Nearly half a century ago the writer began collecting the dialect words which he heard fall from the lips of the old folk at whose firesides he daily sat. In the course of time the list grew until something like five hundred words had been jotted down. About that time a Yorkshire Reading came into his possession. This contained a two-page glossary of about forty words, alphabetically arranged. Dating from that time, the idea of compiling a glossary was conceived. The result is the present work. So far as the compiler knows, no popular work of this character has been published. That a growing desire for such a glossary exists he fully believes. During the last ten or fifteen years the interest taken in the Folk Speech has greatly increased. Many there be who have come to know and appreciate the forcefulness and antiquity of that which, during the past, they unthinkingly, and for want of knowledge, considered as nothing better and nothing beyond the vulgar speech of the untutored country-folk. Latterly, however, a more intelligent acquaintance with the Folk Speech has brought about a new order of things. The discovery has been made that language is subject to the law of change - of fashion if you like. Hence, much which has been judged as vulgar had no better foundation in support of such a verdict than deploiable ignorance. For a moment let us consider the matter from one single standpoint, and this fact presents itself. Much of the early literature, both sacred and profane, proves beyond all doubt that the rude language of to-day was the polite speech of our forefathers. Again and again, in the works of those authors, whose MSS. date from 1400 to 1600, do we find their most brilliant thoughts presented to us in language which for generations has been considered unworthy of a place in polite literature. Book The North Riding Record Society Vol 2

Download or read book The North Riding Record Society Vol 2 written by Robert Bell Turton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Riding Record Society, Vol. 2: For the Publication of Original Documents Relating to the North Riding of the County of York; The Honor and Forest of Pickering I have, in the introduction to the first volume, already expressed my regret that the editing of the Pickering Records has not fallen into hands more fitted for the task. I have no wish to repeat here what I have said there, but my readers must put up with the inevitable result of intrusting the work to me - namely, that the introduction to one volume must constantly amplifyand even amend suggestions made in the introduction to a preceding volume. To a certain extent this would probably have been the case in the hands of any editor. Since the days of Chief Justice Hale, the Forest Records have been almost entirely neglected; a few sparse forest rolls relating to the Forests of Rossendale and Exmoor, and a few others relating to Staffordshire, in the publications of the Salt Society, are in print. There may also be others which have not come to my notice; and there is Mr. Fisher's excellent History of the Forest of Essex. But the student of forest customs requires a work as important as has already been produced for the early history of agriculture, and such a work has been left to the care of a future age. I must thank those of the members of the Society who have been kind enough to call my attention to oversights and omissions in the last volume, and I trust that I shall receive as many friendly criticisms with regard to the present volume. Some members consider that I should have called more attention to the existence of Guild-houses in small villages like Cloughton and Scalby (see Vol. I., N 8. Pp. 47, My reason for not doing so was because such notices were too slight to enable me to conjecture what their nature might be, and I hoped, and still hope, that I may come'across other notices throwing further light on the subject.
