He owned a large number of negroes and was an amiable, easy - going master, much more interested in litera ture than in rice planting, and preserving in his daily life many of the habits of his English ancestors. The Christmas holidays on his plantation lasted from Christmas Eve - always a half-holiday - until the Yule log burnt in two after New Year's Day. The first work done in the New Year was the selection by the negroes of the Yule log, or, as they called it, the Christmas back-log, for the next Christmas fire.
