Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the North American Species of the Genus Lithocolletis Hubner To Dr. Edward Meyrick of Marlborough, England, to whose consideration the proposed division of the genus was submitted, I am indebted for the expression of his opinion on the establishment of the subgenera, ' and also for the comparison of several American species with closely related European ones. Through the kindness of Dr. Henry Skinner of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, and Prof. Samuel Henshaw of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Cambridge, Mass, I was given every opportunity to examine and sketch the many valuable types of species of this genus. Dr. James Fletcher has sent me a number of Canadian species for examination, for which privilege I return thanks. Book The Potato Crop

  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2019-12-03
  • ISBN : 3030286835
  • Pages : 524 pages

Download or read book The Potato Crop written by Hugo Campos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides a fresh, updated and science-based perspective on the current status and prospects of the diverse array of topics related to the potato, and was written by distinguished scientists with hands-on global experience in research aspects related to potato. The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world’s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice. On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets. These two factors highlight the underappreciated and underrated role of the potato as a dependable nutrition security crop, one that can mitigate turmoil in world food supply and demand and political instability in some developing countries. Increasingly, the global role of the potato has expanded from a profitable crop in developing countries to a crop providing income and nutrition security in developing ones. This book will appeal to academics and students of crop sciences, but also policy makers and other stakeholders involved in the potato and its contribution to humankind’s food security.

Book Incompatibility and Incongruity in Wild and Cultivated Plants

Download or read book Incompatibility and Incongruity in Wild and Cultivated Plants written by Dreux de Nettancourt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in plant cell molecular biology have considerably increased our understanding of pollen-pistil barriers, particularly those operated by incompatibility mechanisms, and, at the same time, demonstrated the complexity and diversity of rejection systems once considered to be relatively simple. This book reviews the impressive knowledge acquired in the last century on the biology, particularly the inheritance and population genetics of self-incompatibility, and presents the new approaches to the study of the structure, function and evolution of incompatibility alleles and the analysis of cell-cell recognition and pollen rejection. The different methods now available for transforming the breeding behaviour of higher plants are also discussed.
