Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 96 No branch of study will place us in closer connection with the workings of nature, or in a better position to observe how the most delicate physical elements combine to produce the most stupendous results, than that which concerns those vast masses of ice, the glaciers, which, descending from the snow fields of the higher Alps with slow but irresistible march into the lower valleys, overwhelming villages, mowing down forests, damming rivers, ploughing up the soil, and grinding, grooving, and polishing the rocks over which they pass, finally present the apparent anomaly of a mountain of perpetual ice sur rounded by orchards and pastures and fields of grain. Download or read book The North American Review Vol 26 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 26 Twenty-Three years have elapsed, since the work standing at the head of this article was given to the public by its distinguished author. It was originally prefixed to his Life of General Washington, as an Introduction necessary to the full understanding of the events of the revolution. It is now detached from that highly valuable work, the merits of which we hope, at some future period, to bring in an ample manner before our readers, if indeed there be any to whom they are unknown, and it is again presented to the public in the form of a distinct history of the colonies, adapted for an independent circulation. We entirely approve of the plan of originally annexing it to the Life of Washington; and we equally approve of its present separation in the manner adopted by the author, and for the reasons which he assigns. A general knowledge of the antecedent history of the colonies is indispensable, for a correct understanding of the history of the revolution, whether it be read for edification, or for the mere amusement of idle hours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 47 From what we have said, it must be evident, that, al though the completion of the first half-century, since the settlement of Ohio, makes a notice of its progress natural and proper at this time, any thing like a complete View of that progress must be out of the question. Had we the materials, they could not properly be presented in a general sketch; and a critical examination could embrace, at any one time, in a work of this kind, but a small portion of the century and a half, elapsed since the first Europeans visited the Ohio valley. We Shall, therefore, speak principally of the results, giving such details only as are least accessi ble and most interesting. Book The North American Review Vol 90 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The North American Review Vol 90 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 90 The question is often started, whether advance in civilization and knowledge is favorable to poetry. It would be about as fair a question, whether the spring, summer, or autumn is the most favorable season for flowers. The only answer would be to ask, in turn, For what kind of flowers? If for anemones and violets, the spring; if for asters, the autumn. In like manner each stage of development has its poetry. In an age of external facts, when life has to do constantly with the outward, poetry will be objective. The epic and the drama both have their epoch here. But when life has become more internal, - when the outward affords little excitement, and the great struggles are carried on within the soul, - then poetry becomes subjective. As society advances, narrative poetry, or even prose fiction, has less place. It is in the imperfections of a wall, the crevices that time has made or unskilfulness has left, that the ivy and the wall-flower take their root. So an examination of the narrative literature of our own day would show that it has its root in the faults, not in the perfections, of our civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 99 A story, dramatically complete from prologue to epilogue, was demanded in the cosmological childhood Of the science, and its manhood still peruses its fragmentary and mutilated rec Ords for the history Of the creation. But doubtless the story is as deficient in the dramatic unities, as the record itself is in continuity or completeness. Referring to Mr. Spencer's admirable essay on Illogical Geology for our reasons, we will simply state our belief that nothing in the form Of a complete or connected history will ever be deciphered from the geological record. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 97 When we consider Jean Paul as an artist, we find a singular limitation in his genius. He has a gigantic creative power combined with a diminutive shaping power. He can grasp and associate truth, feeling, facts, phenomena, more Copiously than any except the very greatest minds; but in grouping his material into coherent relations to a general design, fashioning it into symmetrical forms, giving it proper location, perspec tive, and movement, many rank much above him who are in comparably inferior to him in everything else. He suffers in popularity greatly in consequence of this defect. Most per sons read chiefly for the story; with him the story is the least important thing, and is buried in gorgeous masses of incidental matter. His sporadic mind and style bewilder and weary the reader who has not agile faculties and, wealthy resources to follow his clews of swift and complex allusion.
