Book The North American Review Vol 45 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The North American Review Vol 45 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 45 To speak correctly, it was their imperfect civilization, their ignorance of the means and the subjects of communication, which thus kept them asunder. Now, on the contrary, a change in the domestic institutions of one country can hardly be effected, without a corresponding agitation in those of its neighbours. A treaty of alliance can scarcely be adjusted, without the intervention of a general congress. The sword cannot be unsheathed in one part of Christendom, without thousands leaping from their scabbards in every other. The whole system is bound together by as nice sympathies, as if animated by a common pulse; and the remotest countries of Europe are brought into contiguity as intimate, as were in ancient times the provinces of a single monarchy. This intimate association has been prodigiously increased, of late years, by the unprecedented discoveries which science has made, for facilitating intercommunication. The inhabitant of Great Britain, that "ultima Thule" of the ancients, can now run down to the extremity of Italy, in less time than it took Horace to go from Rome to Brundusium. A steamboat of fashionable tourists will touch at all the places of note in the Iliad and Odyssey, in fewer weeks than it would have cost years to an ancient Argonaut, or a crusader of the Middle Ages. Every one, of course, travels, and almost every capital and noted watering place on the continent swarms with its thousands, and Paris with its tens of thousands of itinerant Cockneys, many of whom, perhaps, have not wandered beyond the sound of Bow bells, in their own little island. Few of these adventurers are so dull, as not to be quickened into something like curiosity, respecting the language and institutions of the strange people, among whom they are thrown; while the better sort, and more intelligent, are led to study more carefully the new forms, whether in arts or letters, under which human genius is unveiled to them. The effect of all this is especially visible, in the reforms introduced into the modern systems of education. In both the universities recently established in London, the apparatus for instruction, instead of being limited to the ancient tongues, is extended to the whole circle of modern literature; and the editorial labors of many of the professors show that they do not sleep on their posts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 31 The contrast between monarchies and democratic states is in nothing more striking, than in the degrees and amount of political abilities, which they respectively call into action. Men may dispute, if they will, whether liberty be the fostering parent of the arts, and may continue to raise questions respect ing the influence of forms of government on letters; but the turbulent contests, the unsparing and unqualified competition, allowed in popular states, quicken natural talents and furnish every facility and every inducement for their display. At courts the race is not necessarily to the swift; and men are naturally turned aside from the career of the public service, when no scope is furnished them for the full exercise of natu ral powers and the manly struggle for honors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 47 From what we have said, it must be evident, that, al though the completion of the first half-century, since the settlement of Ohio, makes a notice of its progress natural and proper at this time, any thing like a complete View of that progress must be out of the question. Had we the materials, they could not properly be presented in a general sketch; and a critical examination could embrace, at any one time, in a work of this kind, but a small portion of the century and a half, elapsed since the first Europeans visited the Ohio valley. We Shall, therefore, speak principally of the results, giving such details only as are least accessi ble and most interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 73 Southey's life is a good picture of the character and fortunes of the man of letters in our own age. He was the best representative of the class; he typified both the strength and the weakness, the pleasures and the pains, the tastes and the powers, of a man exclusively devoted to literary pursuits. He began to publish before he came of age, and he died almost with the pen still grasped in the fingers which had wielded it for half a century. He lived by his publications, which, though they gained him an honorable name, and have secured for him a permanent place in the history of English literature, afforded him a meagre and uncertain livelihood. He was rich in nothing but books, of which he had accumulated a larger store probably than any man in Great Britain not favored by hereditary wealth. The booksellers made him their dependant, but could not render him their slave; he was obliged to write for his bread, but he had not the spirit, or the want of spirit, of a Grub-street hack, ready to engage in any task that opened a chance of profit. Could he have stooped to this humiliation, he might, with his versatility of power and vast range of acquisition, speedily have become rich. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 51: July, 1840 She got, says he, a history that I had written of this witch craft, and though she had before read it over and over, yet now she could not read, I believe, one entire sentence of it, but She made of it the most ridiculous travestie in the world, with such a patness of fancy, to Supply the sense that she put upon it, that I was amazed. And she particularly told me, that I should quickly come to disgrace by that history. It was to this book, that Richard Baxter wrote a preface, when it was printed in London, in which he states, that 9' he who will not be convinced by all the evidence Dr. Mather presents, that the child was bewitched, must be a very oh durate Sadducee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 99 A story, dramatically complete from prologue to epilogue, was demanded in the cosmological childhood Of the science, and its manhood still peruses its fragmentary and mutilated rec Ords for the history Of the creation. But doubtless the story is as deficient in the dramatic unities, as the record itself is in continuity or completeness. Referring to Mr. Spencer's admirable essay on Illogical Geology for our reasons, we will simply state our belief that nothing in the form Of a complete or connected history will ever be deciphered from the geological record.
