It even countenances shame, though only enough to keep up a vicious eagerness for pleasure, by a faint consciousness that it is not quite blameless, and there fore must be secret. It allows of remorse too, so far as it may remind one vividly of the scenes and excesses he has gone through, Without strengthening or forcing him to aban don them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review and Miscellaneous Journal, Vol. 9 We have never given an account of Mr. Hogg's writings, though they are deserving of attention as well from their respectability as from the peculiar circumstances under which the author appeared before the public; a short notice of the Queen's Wake, which did not enter at large into its merits, is all that we find about him on looking over our preceding numbers. Indeed, he seems to have faded fast from the memory of the public, though considerable curiosity was excited by his first appearance: much of that was owing to his obscure situation and narrow means of education; from which we were surprised to see him break out with so much of the air of an author. It was natural in such a case to expect too much from him, and when he failed to satisfy that expectation, it was equally natural to place him lower than he deserved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review and Miscellaneous Journal, 1821, Vol. 12 The Edinburgh Review against Oxford, refuted, ' which was in its turn the subject of a very lively retort, in the Edinburgh Review. To this Dr. Copleston rejoined in a pamphlet, of which several long extracts were reprinted in the Boston An thology, and here, if we are not misinformed, the contro versy rested. It is no part of our present purpose to revive it; t e rather, as its essential merits are sometimes waved by the warmest friends of Oxford. It is not unusual to hear suc friends concede that the En lish Universities are by no means to be considered merely as p aces of education, whither young men are to resort to acquire knowledge. There are, on the contrary, two other points of view in which these est ments are entitled to respect. The first is, as affording an eh gible residence for oun men of rank and fortune, between the periods of youth an manhood; subjecting them to some restraints, and calling on them for some efforts, which if they make, it is well, and if they do not, it is better than to have been at the centre of dissipation, in the capital. The other principal light, in which the English Universities are viewed, ts that of a nursery for the established church; not exactly as a place to acquire the knowledge requisite for assumin its dig hitias; but as a middle state of referment, from w ich the candidate is translated, when his our cometh. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review and Miscellaneous Journal, Vol. 6 Further than this, he is thought by some to be a wild, luxurious bard, who is to pass through a generous and yet repressing culture, from the frolicks of blooming time, to a full, rich, and sober maturity-whose early licentiousuess shews a leaning alter the better afl'ections'-whose impo rity has its redeeming gracesp-whose errours deserve mer ciful allowances, because they are on the shle of sentiment and greatness. Now he is almost the last poet, for whom we should have thought of setting up the apology of a violent, overrunning nature. We have never lamented in him the oppression or waste of genius, nor the perversions of a fine spirit, whose abandoned gayety would one day mellow into warm-hearted cheerfulnees, and its voluptuous excesses end in singleness and purity of love. He discloses no warm and eager aspiring after something higher and purer, with a promise of lendingby and by to goodness, the graces and enthusiasm he had wasted upon vice. His mind never seems to be unconsciously wrong, from rapture, spontaneous over flow and impulses that will not be ruled. We can discover no depth in his contrition, nor desertion in his grief, nor involuntary glow and tenderness in his friendship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North-American Review and Miscellaneous Journal, 1816, Vol. 2 A curious instance of his rashness in denying any fact that makes against his theory, and positive manner of assu ring his readers that nothing of the kind existed, occurs in regard to the famous hieroglyphical inscription at Dighton, in Massachusetts. Permit me to undeceive you further about another fact, * equally false, to which the memoir of the French academician has given rise: it has been pub lished throughout Europe, that there had been found in the centre of new-england, a stone which contained an inscription in Thibetian characters, which is, as you know, the country where the Grand Lama resides. After hav ing procured all the information possible, about this pre 'tended monument, I can boldly assure you, that no in scription in any character whatever has ever been dis covered in the whole extent of America, from the country of the Esquimaux to the extremity of Terra del Fuego. This new-england rock is like the medal of Julius Cae sar, which was said to have been dug up among the sav ages called Cesareans, in the neighbourhood of Patagonia. From which you may judge to what degree they have dared to assert the most incredible things, to support the most absurd systems, ' This work of De Pan's discovers a good deal of research into the history of different nations, but the most perverse use is made of his materials, and his ignorance of the real character of the Indians is most profound. The work is written in a style of petulance and sarcasm, often adopted by those who have been called philosophers in modern times, though nothing can be more opposed to the true spirit of philosophy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 7: And Miscellaneous Journal Those who approach this subject, without any preconceived opinions, will, we believe, acknowledge that these are some of the chief pleasures, which they derive from the perception of beauty. We have not attempted a complete classification some we have intentionally omitted, because they have been the subjects of controversy. Those, which we have enume rated, are seldom found unmingled and like many natural substances often produce very different effects, when alone and when in combination. We find thus in beautiful objects the following means of gratification, - a power to produce emo tions, or to suggest them, or things, which have produced them; to produte or suggest pleasing sensations, to gratify our sense of fitness and utility, to excite the mind to contrast or to compare. Without any reasons being urged in opposition, it would then be a philosophical reply to the question, what are the elements of beauty i - all these different sources of pleasure in things which are called beautiful. If these are all elements of beauty, it is obviously impossible to resolve them into any one principle of our nature they are dissimi lar and distinct. All that the subject admits is to classify and arrange the different sorts of gratification, to determine what will delight alone, and what only from its situation and relations; what is the result of universal and what of arbi trary associations. The only fair objection to this conclusion, worthy of any reply, has been often made, and again and again repeated by those, who have not fully comprehended its meaning. It is said, that when we ask, what is beauty? We do not mean to ask what are the'means of pleasing, which things beautiful possess, but what is there common to them all. This objec tion proceeds on a philological assumption, that where many things are classed together under the same name, there must of. Necessity be some leading idea, running through all its different applications. This is very explicitly stated by the author of the article before us, as the ground vs ork of some of, his reasonings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 10: And Miscellaneous Journal The following year, 17 7 5, brought forth a still more magni heent collection of Polyglot inscriptions, upon occasion of 'the marriage of prince Emmanuel of Piedmont, with a French princess. Twenty four of the most conspicueus cities of Pied mont were introduced, saluting the royal pair in twenty four addresses, in as'many different languages, all in ditl'erent characters, of the Bodoni foundery, and adorned with em blematical engravings, relative to the cities respectively, by the first Italian artists. Besides the languages ln the former collection, there were introduced in this, the Ethiopic, the jewish-german, the Gothic, the Russian, the Tibetian, the Illyrian in the hieronymian character, the Sanscrit, the lily rian or cyrillic-sclavonian, and finally the Georgian.' Of these languages, ' says Professor de Rossi, 'there were sev eral - paiticularly of the Asiatic - which me very abstruse and hard. This could not but make the undertaking for a. Single person, and him a European; extremely arduous and even hazardous, inasmuch as whenever at Rome and else where, there is a proposal of similar Polyglot productions, theugh of much less extent than this, many learned men and the natives, best acquainted with their respective tongues which can be found, are employed in composing them.' After having finished this splendid work, and published a defence of the one above mentioned, on the Vain Expectation of the Jews, Professor de Rossi turned his attention to the subject of He' brew bibliography. From the mass of editions of the fifteenth century and of materials relative to the-subject, which he had been long collecting, he published, the following year, his Work de Hebraicas typographiae Origins et Primitiis, which was receix ed by the learned with great applause, and twa years after reprinted in Germany He afterw a1 (is pursued this subject much farther, and after a lapse of twenty years, published his flnnali Ebrro typogrqfici del sec. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 48 But no part Of his early studies was so advantageous to him, as the long series Of diligent researches, which he carried on upon the Site of the principal Cities of Ancient Italy fre quently directing in person the excavations from which his materials were to be derived, and pursuing with his own eyes the numerous topographical investigations, the neglect of which had hitherto formed one of the Chief obstacles to a Satisfactory history of that remote period. An attentive Study of numismatics strengthened and confirmed the views, which these preparatory researches had suggested and, when he first put his hand to the composition of his history of Italy before the Roman Conquest, there was hardly a spot of the peninsula which he had not visited, or an important monu ment which he had not examined. This work was published in Florence, in 1810, in four volumes octavo, together with a folio Atlas, containing sixty plates, illustrative of the manners and customs of the ancient Italians. Its object was as important as its plan was new. Ancient Italy had till then been the subject of puerile fables, or of researches purely antiquarian. Micali was the first who ventured to engage in the bold and hazardous task of separating the false from the true, in the fragments which have come down to us Of the old writers, and of restoring the history of this primitive civilization, by drawing from its numerous monuments their varied and enigmatic records. His work was divided into two parts. The first is devoted to a descriptive examination of the original divisions and Of the primitive inhabitants of the country. The second is a narrative of their revolutions and of the various incidents of their history. The History of Italy before the Roman Conquest, preceded the Roman History of Niebuhr, and, if we may be allowed to judge by the rank which these two celebrated works seem now to have permanently taken, has survived it. Niebuhr himself, who had attacked many of the positions of Micali in his first edition refracted his accusations in the last.
