Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review and Miscellaneous Journal, 1821, Vol. 12 The Edinburgh Review against Oxford, refuted, ' which was in its turn the subject of a very lively retort, in the Edinburgh Review. To this Dr. Copleston rejoined in a pamphlet, of which several long extracts were reprinted in the Boston An thology, and here, if we are not misinformed, the contro vera rested. It is no part of our present purpose to revive it; the rather, as its essential merits are sometimes waved by the warmest friends of Oxford. It is not unusual to hear suc friends concede that the En lish Universities are b no means to be considered merely as p aces of education, whither young men are to resort to acquire knowledge. There are, on the cpntrary, two other points of view in which these est ments are entitled to respect. The first is, as affording an eh gible residence for oun men of rank and fortune, between the periods of yout an manhood; subjecting them to some restraints, and calling on them for some efforts, which if they make, it is well, and if they do not, it is better than to have been at the centre of dissipation, in the capital. The other principal light, in which the English Universities are viewed, 18 that of a nursery for the established church; not exactly as a place to acquire the knowledge requisite for assumin its dig nitica; but as a middle state of referment, from w ich the candidate is translated, when his our cometh. It even countenances shame, though only enough to keep up a vicious eagerness for pleasure, by a faint consciousness that it is not quite blameless, and there fore must be secret. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, 1896, Vol. 163 What the great advocate then so unhesitatingly sug gested, many a thoughtful American since then has at least sus pected - that our great proclamation, as a piece of political literature, cannot stand the test of modern analysis; that it belongs to the immense class of over-praised productions; that it is, in fact, a stately patchwork of sweeping propositions of somewhat doubtful validity that it has long imposed upon man kind by the well-known effectiveness of verbal glitter and sound that, at the best, it is an example of florid political declamation belonging to the sophomoric period of our national life, a period which, as we flatter ourselves, we have now outgrown. Nevertheless, it is to be noted that whatever authority the Declaration of Independence has acquired in the world, has been due to no lack of criticism, either at the time of its first appear ance, or since then; a fact which seems to tell in favor of its es sential worth and strength. From the date of its original publica tion down to the present moment, it has been attacked again and again, either in anger, or in contempt, by friends as well as by enemies of the American Revolution, by liberals in politics as well as by conservatives. It has been censured for its substance, it has been censured for its form, for its misstatements of fact, for its fallacies in reasoning, for its audacious novelties and para doxes, for its total lack of all novelty, for its repetition of old and threadbare statements, even for its downright plagiarisms; finally, for its grandiose and vaporing style. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 140: January, 1885 Allow also that, under the glamour of the strife, to the eye of his Opponent a candidate for office is partially dehumanized and passes for the time into the order of insensates; Allow, further, that there is a widely accepted theory that, except for the immediate politi cal purpose, the objurgative language is divested of its usually offensive meaning, being by common consent canceled after election. These extenuations are admissible; but they are, after all, much too slender to save the vituperative habit from being an abomination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review and Miscellaneous Journal, 1821, Vol. 10 The following year, 1775, brought forth a still more mag nificent collec tiun of Polyglot inscriptions, upon occasion ot the marriage of prince Emanuel of Piedmont, with a French princess. Twenty four of the most conspit uous cities of Piedmont were introduced, saluting the royal pair in twenty four addresses, m as many dtfl'erent languages, all in different characters, of the Bodoni foundery, and adorned with em blematit al engravings, relative to the cities respectively, by the first Italian artists. Besides the languages in the former collection, there were introduced in this, the Ethiopic, the jewish-german, the Gothic, the Russian. Tne Tibetian, the lllyrian in the Hieronymian character, the Sanscrit, the III) rian or cyrillic-sclavonian. And finally the Georgian. Of these languages, ' says Professor de Rossi, there were several, particularly of the Asiatic. Which are very abstruse and hard. This could not but make the undertaking for a single person, and him a European, extremely arduous; and even hazardous, inasmuch as whenever at Rome and else where, there is a proposal of similar Polyglot productions, though of much less extent than this, many learned men and the natives, best acquainted with their respective tongues which can be found, are employed in composing them.' After having finished this splendid work, and published a defence of the one above mentioned, on the Vain Expectation of the Jews, Professor de Rossi turned his attention to the subject of He brew bibliography. From the mass of editions of the fifteenth century and of materials relative to the subject, which he had been long collecting. He published. The following year, his work do Hebraica typographite Origine et Primitiis, which was received by the learned with great applause, and two years after reprinted in Germany. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, 1828, Vol. 26 The character of the colonists themselves, their origin, pro gress, and governments, their local disputes and controversies, their constant struggles against the claims of the crown and its agents, the early assertion of their rights and privileges, the structure Of their institutions, the boldness and freedom of their Opinions upon political subjects, their manners, habits, and pursuits, their exertions and services in the wars, in which the mother country was involved, their sacrifices in defence Of their settlements, their splendid, though often unrequited labors for the advancement of English glory and English power, must all be thoroughly studied before any stranger can comprehend the nature or the causes of the revolution. It will otherwise remain a profound mystery, how a little tax upon tea should have kindled a general indignation; or how the assertion of a right by the British Parliament to tax us without representation, urg ed almost as an abstract theory, with scarcely any practical Oppression, should have brought on a contest with thirteen colo nies, having separate interests and Objects, and united them at once in a common warfare for life, liberty, and independence. The author himself has, however, so well explained his motives for the undertaking in a preface, written with so much clear ness and simplicity, that we willingly transcribe it into our pages, as a far more satisfactory vindication, than any, which we could presume to Offer. So large a portion of the life of General Washington was de voted to the public, so elevated and important were the stations which be filled, that the history of his life is, at the same time, the history of his nation.
