Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal Course in Reading: Fourth Reader; The Wonderful Things Around Us One afternoon when the school duties Of the day were done, a bright, thoughtful boy sat at his window. He saw the river that swept past the garden wall. On the other side Of the river lay a beautiful val ley, and beyond this, long lines Of hills. Among these hills were small valleys leading into the one through which the river wound its way. The boy beheld this delightful scene with a look Of inquiry on his face. What could he be thinking about? What did he wish to inquire about? Was it the curious curves of the hills, giving such grace to the land scape, that pleased him? Bright pebbles on the river bank shone in the sunlight. Would he ask about these? Did he want to ask whence the water Of the river came and where it went? Book The American Normal Readers Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Normal Readers Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by May Louise Harvey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Normal Readers, Vol. 3 For the primary teacher the study of history, especially in its beginnings, is extremely important. If we would really understand the minds of children, let us turn back to the pages of the past where we may follow the development of the race as it has been led forward toward perfect adjustment and realization, for in the develop ment of the race we may see that of the typical child. By actual experience in teaching we learn that certain things appeal most to children and are therefore most effective at specific stages of their advancement. We are often able to determine very nearly the learning point of the child's mind, and by the study of the child in the light of history we come to understand why all this is true. We see that those elements which have entered most persistently into the development of the race are the very things in which the child finds his greatest delight. This truth has a deep significance in practical education. If we as teachers will be guided by the natural spontaneous interest of children and if we will at the same time direct this interest toward their highest good, following in advance as it were, we shall not be found blindly striving against Nature and perhaps checking many a God-given impulse, but by understanding the child's real need we may be able to supply it more fully and exactly and so to assist the natural course of his advancement. This is the central thought of the American Normal Readers. An effort has been made throughout to provide material interesting and truly profitable to the child because suited to his needs, and helpful and suggestive to the teacher. Book The Normal Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Normal Reader Classic Reprint written by J. V. Coombs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal Reader In teaching elocution the author has felt the need of a book different from what he could secure. Many good books on theory are to be found. Choice selections are abundant. But to secure a book that contained proper exercises for drills, and also a variety of popular selections, is impossible. In order to select fifteen or twenty selections for a reading class, or an elocutionary contest, many books would have to be used. To meet this want this volume has been prepared. In Part I. the author has given what he considers the best way to teach beginners how to read. Part II. gives a full discussion of Dictionary work. Part III. contains hints and suggestions to teachers of Beading. Part IV. is a full discussion of the elements of Elocution. Part V. contains the most popular selections now in use. Among them the entire programme of most of the popular elocutionists and readers can be found. The author has collected all grades and sentiments of recitations - Humorous, Dramatic, Oratorical, and Didactic. The author desires to make grateful acknowledgments for the assistance he has received. Prof. V. A. Pinkley prepared all of Part IV., and is entirely responsible for the same. This part is a condensed elocution, and it will certainly do much to elevate the art of elocution. Prof. Warren McBroom, of Crawfordsville, Ind., prepared the chapter on Elementary Sounds. The article, How to Teach Reading, was prepared by S. E. Thomas, President of Kentucky University, Paducah, Ky. That this book may aid teachers in their work is the sincere hope of the author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Classics: Fourth Reader A classic is something more easily known than defined. It is not necessarily abstruse, difficult, or remote from common life. It is a piece of literature that has received the approval of good judges for a long enough time to make that approval settled. Like good music, it cannot grow old; it is last year's rag-time that becomes unpleasant, not the good old songs. A classic may be as old as Homer, or as new as Hawthorne; it may be as difficult as Dante, or as simple as Mother Goose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American School Readers: First Reader The american school first reader is planned as the children's second reading book. It assumes that they can read the usual vocabulary of a good primer, either of this series or of any other. It is, however, closely related to the American School Primer. The children and their pets, whose acquaintance was made in that book, appear again here, with new experiences, in the earlier pages. But the keynote of the book is children's lore. The characters of the primer appear less and less frequently and finally drop out altogether. The latter part of the book contains children's literature only. The authors believe that this literature is of so excel lent a quality that it will intensify the interest of chil dren in the reading book, and hence in learning to read, and will also implant the seeds of good literary taste. Carefully organized lists of words for phonic drill are given on pages 135 - 137. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
