Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alumni Columns, Vol. 6: February, 1947 The record made by Coach Prather through the 34 years of coaching college basketball is one of which any coach should be justly proud. While all the records of games won and lost are not available, we have been able to get the records for 28 of the 34 years. These records show that of the 482 games played, Prather's teams have won 350 and lost 132, or figuring on a percentage basis, of all games played have been won. In only two of the 28-year records available has his team lost more games than they have won. In 1929-30 and in 1941-42 the record shows 8 wins against 11 losses and 5 wins against 11 losses, respectively.lowest scores of any two games were made at Lafayette on an outdoor court in the rain. In the early twenties the score of one game was Southwestern 4, Normal 3, while in 1914-15 the next lowest recorded score was Normal 9, Southwestern 5. The highest score made by a Demon team was made in a game with Magnolia A. M. In the early thirties when the Demons scored 96 points (this was before the elimination of the center jump after every goal). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alumni Columns, Vol. 6: November, 1946 General Eisenhower talked about his ideas for the purposes of education, say ing, in part, that although it has been proved on dramatic occasions, like Pearl Harbor, that the American people can be united by fear and anger, they need to be educated for unity resulting from more constructive promptings than fear. He. Urged colleges in America to spon sor the study of other governments so that we can supplant fear with under standing. By acquainting its students with the workings of other governments and other nations, knowledge will be. Substituted for fear and suspicion. This, he said, would be a gigantic step toward the abolition Of war. He asserted that, regardless of whether nuclear fission weapons and bacteriological warfare would be used, the world cannot stand another war. Book McMaster University Volume 3 1957 1987

Download or read book McMaster University Volume 3 1957 1987 written by James G. Greenlee and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1957, McMaster was a small Baptist enclave of traditional higher learning on the western outskirts of Hamilton. Thirty years later it was home to the only nuclear reactor on a Commonwealth campus and had cultivated a thriving engineering program and a world-class medical school. In the third volume of the university's history, James Greenlee illuminates the core ideas, driving ambitions, and occasionally sharp conflicts that marked this startling transition. Greenlee offers a tightly focused study of the planning, people, and events that gave McMaster its distinctive and bold personality. At the heart of these developments stood President Harry Thode, whose master plan forged a research-intensive institution of medium size, but one capable of surpassing the largest institutions in carefully selected fields. Despite dramatic ups and downs, the remarkable persistence of this model is the key to understanding modern McMaster. For readers interested in the problems of mass education in a democratic age, the origins of revolutionary approaches to medical training, or the tangled relations among a university, its community, and the province, this volume, like the McMaster leaders it follows, has a story to tell.
