After graduating from the public secondary school in his home town, he entered George Peabody College in 1895, where he graduated with the L. I. Degree in 1897. He then taught three years in the public schools of his native state. When, in 1900, Peabody College offered a competitive scholarship carrying a stipend of $200 annually to the successful applicant from Williamson and Dickson Counties, Mr. Winstead and Miss Elizabeth Briggs were among the twenty-odd candidates to apply. Mr. Winstead won not only the scholarship (with a grade but also the love of his gracious colleague and rival Miss Briggs, who became his wife a few years later.
