Book Arthroplasty for the Treatment of Fractures in the Older Patient

Download or read book Arthroplasty for the Treatment of Fractures in the Older Patient written by Joseph Borrelli Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing exclusively on the older patient with poor bone quality, this unique book presents the indications, contraindications and common techniques – as well as the risks, benefits and outcomes – for utilizing arthroplasty for the treatment of fractures in this population, sensibly divided into four thematic sections. The incidence and burden of fragility fractures is presented in part one, with considerations of the influences of osteoporosis on both treatment and healing. The subsequent three sections cover upper extremity fractures, lower extremity fractures, and peri-articular nonunions, respectively. However, far from providing a simple “how-to” for the techniques discussed, the relevant current literature is presented as well as the common techniques employed in fracture management, allowing the reader to select the best approach for the specific patient presentation. In addition, chapters are included here that cover degenerative joint conditions not typically treated with total joint replacement. The treatment of fragility fractures is constantly evolving, and the aging population is consistently expanding, creating a strong need for clinicians who have experience with and exposure to the use of arthroplasty techniques as an option in their successful treatment. Written and edited by leaders in the field, Arthroplasty for the Treatment of Fractures in the Older Patient is an invaluable resource for orthopedic surgeons, residents and support staff who see and treat these increasingly common injuries.

Book Orthopedics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarmiento Augusto
  • Publisher : JAYPEE BROTHERS PUBLISHERS
  • Release : 2012-12-15
  • ISBN : 9350905469
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Orthopedics written by Sarmiento Augusto and published by JAYPEE BROTHERS PUBLISHERS. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author clearly states that his comments often are based on vicariously obtained information, while other times are the product of personal clinical or research experiences. The realization that there is not a fixed, indisputable system or technique that under all circumstances is the only one appropriate, either in theory or in practice, calls for objectivity, particularly at a time when financial considerations have become seminal in the everyday practice of the profession. The plethora of new surgical techniques or implants that are on a daily basis enthusiastically marketed and rapidly accepted before sufficient period of study, call for as much understanding as possible of every available option. Failure to adhere to these precepts eventually harms patients and seriously contributes to the already dangerous escalation in the cost of orthopedic care. This book beautifully describes the balance between the surgical and nonsurgical approaches to orthopaedic care not only for sound professional reasons but for economic ones as well. Topics covered under reconstructive surgery, general trauma, progress in total hip surgery, smoking and fracture healing, wires (broken) total hip, electrical stimulation, etc. Section on Miscellaneous addresses variety of topics of philosophical or political nature. The ADDENDA contains addresses and abbreviated articles dealing on topics that shed light into authors overall personal attitudes toward a changing discipline. This book is useful for graduates, postgraduates, orthopedic surgeons and residents.

Book Current Concepts of External Fixation of Fractures

Download or read book Current Concepts of External Fixation of Fractures written by Hans K. Uhthoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: External fixation is now being used widely to maintain fractures, osteo tomies, and arthrodeses in a desired position during consolidation. Whereas external fixation has been readily accepted in European countries, its use has weathered a rather stormy course in North America, especially in the treatment of fractures. Only recently has external fixation found its rightful place on this continent as well. Many different models are on the market today, and the practitioner is faced with a difficult decision in selecting a model. Should he buy a system where the fracture has to be reduced first, or should he work with a device permitting a reduction after insertion of the pins? To enable surgeons to study the different systems, to discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and to permit them to put their hands on these devices and inspect them personally, the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Ottawa organized an applied basic science course in May 1981, External Fixation of Fractures. During this course, all major systems were pre sented to the participants. As happened during the course "Internal Fixation of Fractures" held two years ago, the rigidity of internal fixation was frequently and intensively debated. Whereas the rigidity of internal fixation cannot be altered during the course of healing, the rigidity of external fixation can be changed. In fact, with progression of union, rods of increasing elasticity can be used.

Book Fractures Evidence Based Management

Download or read book Fractures Evidence Based Management written by Brandon Gomez and published by American Medical Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuity of a bone may break in response to a trauma, injury or stress. This condition is called a bone fracture. In orthopedic medicine, bone fractures are classified on the basis of the mechanism by which the fracture has been incurred, soft-tissue involvement, fracture pattern, anatomical location, etc. Some of its various types are skull fracture, spinal fracture, complete fracture, spiral fracture, impacted fracture, pathologic fracture, periprosthetic fracture, etc. A bone fracture is assessed on the basis of a physical examination and the medical history. Radiographic imaging of the bone and nearby joints helps to determine dislocations and fracture-dislocations if any. In certain cases, MRI and CT scans may also be required. Bone fractures can be treated surgically or non-surgically. Non-surgical strategies comprise of immobilization, pain management and stabilization. In cases where absence of operative interventions may result in prolonged immobilization and complications such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, pressure sores and chest infections, surgery is a recommended strategy. From theories to research to practical applications, case studies related to all contemporary topics of relevance in the diagnosis and management of bone fractures have been included in this book. It presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe. Doctors and students actively engaged in orthopedics will find this book full of crucial and unexplored concepts.
