This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth and Error of Christian Science I have made little allusion to the various, more or less mutually opposed, schools of Healing by Thought, and have not even mentioned M r Dowie, who has had a follow ing rivalling in numbers that of Mrs Eddy, and who is alleged to have produced quite as striking cures without physical means. But he has attached his healing to no new theory of Metaphysic, or of Christian doctrine, and therefore does not propagate a belief in his cures which is subversive of ordinary doctrine or of common sense. Consequently there is nothing new in his teaching to criticise; and as regards his healing, if there is any truth in the theory given as accounting for the cures of Christian Science, namely, the calling out, by some means, of a latent vitality re siding in the sub-consciousness of the patient, it will equally account for those of Mr Dowie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science Falsely So Called AS we thoroughly investigate Christian Science, it proves to be one of the several ways in which the antichrist is manifesting himself at the present time. Perhaps, in its subtle teachings, there is no other delusion so vile and deceptive. As I learn more about it, I am confident that the great multitudes Of Christian people are ignorant Of its real teachings, and, there fore, feel impelled, as one upon Zion's watch tower, to sound the alarm and announce the approach Of a deadly enemy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative and Rational Christian ScienceIf God should select you to deliver a message to his people, -what would you do with the message? Would you give it to the people as instructed, or keep it your self and copyright it, and sell it to the good people who thirst after Truth, charging them exorbitant prices? When you find. Any cult claiming to have a special reve lation, which is the only truth that God has given his people, it is pretty safe to class them with impostors, but if you discover that they are using religion as work ing capital for accumulating wealth, then you can very easily render a decision. People who have never in vestigated the laws and power of suggestion are often misled when they learn of cures being effected by the different cults. The author will aim to prove, that cures are no proof whatever concerning the genuine ness of the philosophy advocated by the promoters of these cults. He will also aim to show how thousands of people who are suffering from mental and physical ailments, can be greatly relieved without surrendering their good common-sense to any false doctoring.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Christian Science With Notes Containing Corrections to Date Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Science With Notes Containing Corrections to Date Classic Reprint written by Mark Twain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain is a man who needs little introduction. One of the most revered authors and humorists in American history, his works have long been celebrated as some of the finest pieces of writing of the nineteenth century. While lesser known than many of his books, Christian Science finds Mark Twain at his best. The book is a satirical examination of the beliefs and practices of Christian Science and its founder Mary Baker Eddy. The book begins with Twain telling the story of his fall off of a cliff in Vienna, Austria. As there is no medical doctor in town, his healing is overseen by a Christian Science practitioner, who treats him by attempting to convince him that the pain is only in his head. The opening of Christian Science is Twain at his most satirical, and is probably the highlight of the book. The latter parts of the book are composed of Twain's examination of the relatively new movement that was Christian Science. Twain takes particular umbrage with the founder of the religion, Mary Baker Eddy, who is portrayed as opportunistic and money hungry, making it clear that the author did not think highly of her. Twain is surprisingly open minded to the beliefs of Christian Science. While the opening chapters make clear exactly the author's feelings towards the movement, Twain does give some credit to the concept of the mind as a healing tool. It is Mary Baker Eddy who is the butt of most of the author's trademark wit and humour. While the book is not the hysterical laugh-fest that some of the author's works are, there is enough humour sprinkled throughout to keep the casual reader entertained. Christian Science stands up as an excellent example of Mark Twain's satire and humour. If you are at all a fan of the author's work, or if you are interested in a satirical take on the subject matter, you will likely find this to be an enjoyable read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sophistries of Christian Science Materialism, that old enemy so often worsted by Idealism, has marshalled his armies for perhaps a final stand. "Progress!" is his war-cry, and his pride is in the visible, the palpable works of his hands. Yonder stand the embattled hosts of Idealism whose rallying-shout like that of the other is "Progress!" She too has achieved, but not the outward, the splendour of cities, the wealth of nations, the commerce of the navigated sea. Men and women are her showing, eternal temples of the living God when the desert claims the city, and the nations are humbled to a name, a memory, and the sea itself has vanished, sunken from its central deeps. But who is the champion of Idealism, the Lord's anointed, empowered to overthrow the arrogant Goliath of Materialism? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valid Objections to So-Called Christian Science During the history of the Church in past time, and even in our own day, various attempts have been made, by those who have set up their own theories as gods to worship, to acquire a certain legitimacy or respectability by filching the Christian name to cover something that was entirely nu-chris tian, or anti-christian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Must Protestantism Adopt Christian Science?: A Churchman's View Even now, when humanity is on its knees by order of the Church authorities and of many religious organizations, praying God to avert war, the prayer seems about as efficacious as a petition to the principles of mathematics would be in solving a problem. Christian Science shows that the trouble lies in a false sense of prayer and of God, and that it also Comes from the wrong Spirit we have inherited from historic Christianity. An illustration of how erroneous conclusions result from investigations which are not based on data from the consciousness of patients, and do not proceed from the standpoints of spiritual healing, is seen in the recent report of the ten clergymen of the Church of England and ten. English physicians of repute. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
