'EMC '91' is the first of an intended major series organized at the European level with the aim of bringing together all those who are involved with the extraction and processing of non-ferrous metals-European metallurgists and their international colleagues-to provide them with the opportunity to exchange views on the state and evolution of their industry. The programme covers all the different aspects of the metallurgy of non-ferrous metals from mining to fabricated products. Particular attention is being paid to the European non -ferrous industry with respect to changes in demand, the technology used, pressures on the environment and the competitive position of manufacturers. The contributions of the plenary lecturers (copies of which will appear in the IMM journal Minerals Industry International in 1991-92) and the many authors are gratefully acknowledged. The importance of flotation in technology is chiefly due to the ease with which it can be made selective and versatile and to the economy of the process. The objective of this book is to review the fundamentals of surface chemistry together with the relevant aspects of organic and inorganic chemistry that-in the opinion of the author-are important ~ control of the froth flotation process. The review updates the information that had been available in books by Sutherland and Wark (1955), Gaudin (1957), Klassen and Mokrousov (1963), and GIembotsky et al. (1963). It emphasizes mainly the surface chemical aspects of the process, leaving other relevant topics such as hydrodynamics, mechanical and electrical technology, cir cuit design and engineering, operations research, instrumentation tech nology, modeling, etc., to appropriate specialized treatments.

Throughout the book, the intention is to emphasize that the applications, though extremely diverse, all are on the same principles of electrochemistry and electrochemical engineer based ing. Those familiar with the first edition will note a significant increase in the number of pages. The most obvious addition is the separate chapter on electrochemical sensors but, in fact, all chapters have been reviewed thoroughly and many have been altered substantially. These changes to the book partly reflect the different view of a second author as well as comments from students and friends. Also, they arise inevitably from the vitality and strength of electrochemical technology; in addition to important improvements in tech nology, new electrolytic processes and electrochemical devices continue to be reported. In the preface to the first edition it was stated: . . . the future for electrochemical technology is bright and there is a general expectation that new applications of electrochemistry will become economic as the world responds to the challenge of more expensive energy, of the need to develop new materials and to exploit different chemical feedstocks and of the necessity to protect the environment. The preparation of this second edition, seven years after these words were written, provided an occasion to review the progress of industrial electro chemistry.
