Book Seventeen Suffolk Martyrs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Seventeen Suffolk Martyrs Classic Reprint written by Nina Frances Layard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeen Suffolk Martyrs Historical facts there are which it is thought convenient to ignore. For it is another characteristic of the day to find excuses for all the past however deserving of blame. As a necessary result of this condoning of evil is the oblivion which has fallen on sufferers for righteousness' sake. Who thinks now of the great army of martyrs, who, in our own land, have in time past laid down their lives for the truth? The oppressors are lauded, the oppressed are forgotten if not blamed. The persecutors are thought well of, the men and women whom they have trampled under foot and killed are forgotten. The following pages shew that, hidden from the eyes of the English nation, there are records of holy martyrs and confessors, suspected of what they called heresy, sometimes tracked out by spies, hunted, condemned, treated as the offscouring of all things by the body which laid claim to the title of the Catholic Church. This body still exists and makes the same claim. It has never disavowed its action or condemned the men who in its name committed these atrocities. And yet there are those who are straining every nerve to bring this nation into subjection to it again. For this purpose they attempt to put out of sight the truth of history, and hide iniquities in which the Church of Rome still glories. These suffering men and women were members of that Holy Catholic Church of which Christ is the Head, and which will only become visible when its Head appears. What calls itself the Church, and is in reality the Apostasy foretold by St. Paul, condemned them to death if they would not commit the idolatry of worshipping as God the consecrated Host. There are other things for which they also suffered martyrdom, but these saints of God, in East Anglia at all events, were enrolled in the noble army of martyrs mainly for their resistance to the doctrine of Transubstantiation and its necessary result in the idolatry of the Mass. Book Ad Martyras and The Passion of The Holy Martyrs Perpetua and Felicitas

Download or read book Ad Martyras and The Passion of The Holy Martyrs Perpetua and Felicitas written by Tertullian and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody, will blame me for placing here the touching history of these Martyrs. It illustrates the period of history we are now considering, and sheds light on the preceding treatise. I can hardly read it without tears, and it ought to make us love "the noble army of martyrs." I think Tertullian was the editor of the story, not its author. Felicitas is mentioned by name in the De Anima: and the closing paragraph of this memoir is quite in his style. To these words I need only add that Dr. Routh, who unfortunately decided not to re-edit it, ascribes the first edition to Lucas Holstenius. Perpetua and Felicitas suffered martyrdom in the reign of Septimius Severus, about the year 202 A.D. Tertullian mentions Perpetua, and a further clue to the date is given in the allusion to the birthday of "Geta the Cæsar," the son of Septimius Severus. There is therefore, good reason for rejecting the opinion held by some, that they suffered under Valerian and Gallienus. Some think that they suffered at Tuburbium in Mauritania; but the more general opinion is, that Carthage was the scene of their martyrdom.

Book Early Christian Martyr Stories

Download or read book Early Christian Martyr Stories written by Bryan M. Litfin and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal narratives are powerful instruments for teaching, both for conveying information and for forming character. The martyrdom accounts preserved in the literature of early Christianity are especially intense and dramatic. However, these narratives are not readily available and are often written in intimidating prose, making them largely inaccessible for the average reader. This introductory text brings together key early Christian martyrdom stories in a single volume, offering new, easy-to-read translations and expert commentary. An introduction and explanatory notes accompany each translation. The book not only provides a vivid window into the world of early Christianity but also offers spiritual encouragement and inspiration for Christian life today.

Book Precious in the Eyes of the Lord

Download or read book Precious in the Eyes of the Lord written by Ray E. Atwood and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many fine published works on the lives and deaths of martyrs and there is no shortage of information on the martyrs of history. However, it is difficult to find one source that describes the lives of martyrs in a comprehensive way. Precious in the Eyes of the Lord: Martyrdom in Christian Tradition presents an account of one hundred martyrs across history. Beginning with the first martyr, Abel in the Old Testament, and concluding with the Acteal martyrs of Mexico in the late twentieth century, the stories of these men and women not only highlight the virtues of charity, fortitude, and patriotism but also reveal the love of God in their hearts.

Book Martyrdom A Guide for the Perplexed

Download or read book Martyrdom A Guide for the Perplexed written by Paul Middleton and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can be said, almost without exaggeration, that martyrdom has become one of the most pressing theological issues facing the contemporary world. Since the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, the world has had to face up to an Islamic manifestation of martyrdom. Martyrdom has a long history; as long as individuals have been dying for their faith or cause, others have been telling and more importantly, interpreting their stories. These martyrologies are essentially conflict stories. Whether a Christian confessing her faith before a bemused Roman governor, or a suicide bomber blowing himself up in a crowed cafe in Jerusalem, the way these stories are recounted - positively or negatively - reflect a wider conflict in which the narrator and his community find themselves. Martyr narratives, whether textual, oral, or even a CNN news report, do more than simply report a death; they also contain the interpretative framework by which that death is understood - again positively or negatively. When the death of a martyr is reported, the way in which that story is told places that death within a larger narrative of conflict, which may be regional, global, or even cosmic. The martyr becomes a symbol of the community's desires and hopes, or for that matter, their terrors and fears, but in either case, the martyr is representative of a larger struggle, and often martyrology contains the vision of how the community envisages final victory over their enemy. This book aims to illuminate the way these conflict stories have been told and function (principally, though not exclusively) within Christian, Jewish, and Islamic communities. Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.
