Book The No BS Guide To DIY Powerwalls

Download or read book The No BS Guide To DIY Powerwalls written by Kelly Hohnholz and published by ReVolt Power. This book was released on 2020-12-25 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guide to DIY Powerwalls was the first of a 3 part series I started in May of 2020 during the height of the Pandemic that focused solely on creating a robust and extremely powerful power storage system similar to the Tesla Powerwall but on a shoestring budget. One of the requirements would be its easy intergration into other off-grid technologies. The search led me to discovering how to repurpose large and relatively inexpensive batteries from wrecked Electric Vehicles (EVs). This book consists of 113 pages broken down into seven chapters which are: Safety, Planning, Teardown, Preparation, Deployment and the P3 (Portable Power Pack) Builds. The guide walks you through determining your energy usage and needs, storage amounts, locating suitable batteries at the best price and converting them into a usable battery bank. This guide illustrates the conversion of a Ford C-Max battery module, but the principals apply to almost any EV battery out there. Although a seemingly daunting task, this book makes it easy with plenty of pictures, careful explanations and a sprinkling of humor. This book will be useful to everyone from the novice to the expert alike.

Book Earth Water The No BS Guide To Off Grid Living

Download or read book Earth Water The No BS Guide To Off Grid Living written by Kelly Hohnholz and published by ReVolt Power. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Mind, Once Expanded, Never Returns To It's Original Dimensions." - Thomas Jefferson Much like the previous "No-BS" guides, the premise is to look at the hurdles to the personal independence of off-grid living, plod through the options that are currently available and then boil all that information down. The plan is to make the information as simple and accessible as possible, so that can be digested by the reader; and employed in a manner that best suits their needs, budget and abilities. This guide will be tackling the 'Big Five' logistical issues facing people wanting to create an off-grid home & life. These are: 1) Power 2) Water 3) Sanitation 4) Climate Control (Heating and Cooling) 5) Food Storage (including refrigeration) Again, while this sort of information is available currently, it's spread all over the internet, consisting of videos, blogs, articles, and who knows what else. Like most of these topics, a lot of what's out there is long, wordy, confusing and in some cases conflicting. "A smart man learns from his mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others and monkeys learn through repetition." This is something I've demonstrated an ability in, to take complex subjects and present them to the various learning styles in a way that everyone can process, understand and implement for themselves. And these lessons encompass both the good and the bad. I've owned my tiny house since 2013 and this guide will be written in plain talk using real world, No-BS lessons I've learned over the last 9 years dealing with the above five subjects. Some of these lessons have had steep (and expensive) learning curves, but better to learn from my mistakes than to wander in blindly and repeat them. Whether you're looking to reduce your daily grind, take a break from the big city, or just want to reclaim some of your privacy that's been lost in the digital age, then this is going to be the guide for you. Earth & Water was the last of a 3 part series I started in May of 2020 during the height of the Pandemic. This book consists of 131 pages broken down into seven chapters which are: Water, Power, Climate Control, Refrigeration, Sanitation, Legal Ramifications and Tips. The guide walks you through planning these critical areas with plenty of pictures, careful explanations and a sprinkling of humor. This book will be useful to everyone from the novice to the expert alike.

Book Decentralised Energy

Download or read book Decentralised Energy written by Christoph Burger and published by Ubiquity Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy system is undergoing a fundamental transformation – from fossil to renewable energy, from central power plants to distributed, decentralised generation facilities such as rooftop solar panels or wind parks, from utilities to private residents as producers of energy, and from analogue to digital. This book looks at the energy transformation from two complementary angles: governance and business model innovation. On the one side, governance is a decisive factor for the success of the transformation because it can act as an accelerator, or it can delay the process. On the other side, entrepreneurs and corporate decision-makers provide new business models for a decentralised energy world. Based on best practices, country studies and interviews with CEOs and founders of startups from all over the world, the “Global Game Changer” suggests eight key principles for political decision-makers to successfully implement the transformation, and six core competencies for corporate decision-makers to thrive in the new marketplace.

Book excerpt: The instant Sunday Times bestseller from the UK's number one true crime podcast, RedHanded! What is it about killers, cults, and cannibals that capture our imaginations even as they terrify and disturb us? How do we carefully consume these cases and what can they teach us about what makes victims and their murderers our collective responsibility? RedHanded rejects the outdated narrative of killers as monsters and that a victim 'was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.' Instead, it dissects the stories of killers in a way that challenges perceptions and asks the hard questions about society, gender, poverty, culture, and even our politics. With Bala and Maguire's trademark humour, research on real-life cases, and unflinching analysis of what makes a criminal, the authors take you through the societal, behavioural, and cultural drivers of the most extreme of human behaviour to find out once and for all: what makes a killer tick?

Book Convergence of Knowledge Technology and Society

Download or read book Convergence of Knowledge Technology and Society written by Mihail C. Roco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to document the most important worldwide accomplishments in converging knowledge and technology, including converging platforms, methods of convergence, societal implications, and governance in the last ten years. Convergence in knowledge, technology, and society is the accelerating, transformative interaction among seemingly distinct scientific disciplines, technologies, and communities to achieve mutual compatibility, synergism, and integration, and through this process to create added value for societal benefit. It is a movement that is recognized by scientists and thought leaders around the world as having the potential to provide far-reaching solutions to many of today’s complex knowledge, technology, and human development challenges. Four essential and interdependent convergence platforms of human activity are defined in the first part of this report: nanotechnology-biotechnology-information technology and cognitive science (“NBIC”) foundational tools; Earth-scale environmental systems; human-scale activities; and convergence methods for societal-scale activities. The report then presents the main implications of convergence for human physical potential, cognition and communication, productivity and societal outcomes, education and physical infrastructure, sustainability, and innovative and responsible governance. As a whole, the report presents a new model for convergence. To effectively take advantage of this potential, a proactive governance approach is suggested. The study identifies an international opportunity to develop and apply convergence for technological, economic, environmental, and societal benefits. The panel also suggests an opportunity in the United States for implementing a program aimed at focusing disparate R and D energies into a coherent activity - a "Societal Convergence Initiative”. This study received input from leading academic, industry, government, and NGO experts from the United States, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Book Nuclear Power

Download or read book Nuclear Power written by Darryl Siemer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-09-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world’s energy sources continue to develop, with less reliance on traditional fossil fuels and more reliance on cleaner, more efficient, alternative energy sources, nuclear power continues to be a dividing point for many people. Some believe it is the answer to our energy problems for the future, while others warn of the risks. Written by a retired scientist who spent most of his career at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), this book aims to delve into the issues surrounding nuclear power and dispel its myths, while building an argument for why the United States should develop a nuclear power plan for the future. As a “whistleblower,” the author spent much of the last ten years of his career at the INL raising concerns about how its mission of serving as the Department of Energy’s lead laboratory in radioactive waste management was not being properly managed. While the United States continues to tread water on the issue of nuclear energy, the author believes that a nuclear “renaissance” is not only possible but is necessary for meeting the world’s growing demand for energy, especially clean energy. With fossil fuels slowly dying out and renewable energy sources not able to handle the demand for a continuously growing energy-consuming public, nuclear is an obvious solution. This book is a must-have for any engineer working in nuclear power, students hoping to go into that industry, and other engineers and scientists interested in the subject. This book is both “technical” and “political” because they’re equally important in determining what actually happens in institutions dealing with technical problems.

Book High Cost of Free Parking

Download or read book High Cost of Free Parking written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off-street parking requirements are devastating American cities. So says the author in this no-holds-barred treatise on the way parking should be. Free parking, the author argues, has contributed to auto dependence, rapid urban sprawl, extravagant energy use, and a host of other problems. Planners mandate free parking to alleviate congestion, but end up distorting transportation choices, debasing urban design, damaging the economy, and degrading the environment. Ubiquitous free parking helps explain why our cities sprawl on a scale fit more for cars than for people, and why American motor vehicles now consume one-eighth of the world's total oil production. But it doesn't have to be this way. The author proposes new ways for cities to regulate parking, namely, charge fair market prices for curb parking, use the resulting revenue to pay for services in the neighborhoods that generate it, and remove zoning requirements for off-street parking.

Book Snake Oil Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. Barker Bausell PhD
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-31
  • ISBN : 019975859X
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Snake Oil Science written by R. Barker Bausell PhD and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of people worldwide swear by such therapies as acupuncture, herbal cures, and homeopathic remedies. Indeed, complementary and alternative medicine is embraced by a broad spectrum of society, from ordinary people, to scientists and physicians, to celebrities such as Prince Charles and Oprah Winfrey. In the tradition of Michael Shermers Why People Believe Weird Things and Robert Parks's Voodoo Science, Barker Bausell provides an engaging look at the scientific evidence for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and at the logical, psychological, and physiological pitfalls that lead otherwise intelligent people--including researchers, physicians, and therapists--to endorse these cures. The books ultimate goal is to reveal not whether these therapies work--as Bausell explains, most do work, although weakly and temporarily--but whether they work for the reasons their proponents believe. Indeed, as Bausell reveals, it is the placebo effect that accounts for most of the positive results. He explores this remarkable phenomenon--the biological and chemical evidence for the placebo effect, how it works in the body, and why research on any therapy that does not factor in the placebo effect will inevitably produce false results. By contrast, as Bausell shows in an impressive survey of research from high-quality scientific journals and systematic reviews, studies employing credible placebo controls do not indicate positive effects for CAM therapies over and above those attributable to random chance. Here is not only an entertaining critique of the strangely zealous world of CAM belief and practice, but it also a first-rate introduction to how to correctly interpret scientific research of any sort. Readers will come away with a solid understanding of good vs. bad research practice and a healthy skepticism of claims about the latest miracle cure, be it St. John's Wort for depression or acupuncture for chronic pain.
