Book excerpt: The Ninja Murders Commodore Matthew Perry's expedition to Japan in 1853 was one of history's defining moments. His visit ended over two-hundred years of self-imposed isolation and precipitated the fall of the Shogunate. It was also the moment that gave birth to Japanese ambitions to rule East Asia and the Western Pacific. America's desire to increase its international standing inadvertently opened a Pandora's Box that would lead to no less than five wars, including World War II. However, The Ninja Murders is not a history book. It's a novel of historical fiction. And as every fan of the genre knows, behind every great historical event, there is a hero deeply enmeshed in intrigue, danger and romance. Samurai, swords and sex! Another page-turner from Andrew Suhrer. Not only do we get a well-researched story, but an incredibly entertaining one at that. Praise for Andrew B. Suhrer's The Flying Dutchmen "Surreal, stunning, heartwarming and magnificent..." Maggie Carter de Vries, Author: Amelia's Secrets. "Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down." Annette Myers, Author: Shrinking Sands of an African American Beach. "A wonderfully researched and written book, a real page turner to the very end. I could not put it down, the characters literally jump off the page as each battle on the field and crisis in daily life was fought."

Book Death Squads in Global Perspective

Download or read book Death Squads in Global Perspective written by B. Campbell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-10-17 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death squads have become an increasingly common feature of the modern world. In nearly all instances, their establishment is tolerated, encouraged, or undertaken by the state itself, which thereby risks its monopoly on the use of force, one of the fundamental characteristics of modern states. Why do such a variety of regimes, under very different circumstances, condone such activity? Death Squads in Global Perspective hopes to answer that question and explain not only their development, but also why they can be expected to proliferate in the early 21st century.

Book Scandal and Democracy

Download or read book Scandal and Democracy written by Mary E. McCoy and published by Southeast Asia Program Publications. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful transitions to enduring democracy are both difficult and rare. In Scandal and Democracy, Mary E. McCoy explores how newly democratizing nations can avoid reverting to authoritarian solutions in response to the daunting problems brought about by sudden change. The troubled transitions that have derailed democratization in nations worldwide make this problem a major concern for scholars and citizens alike. This study of Indonesia's transition from authoritarian rule sheds light on the fragility not just of democratic transitions but of democracy itself and finds that democratization's durability depends, to a surprising extent, on the role of the media, particularly its airing of political scandal and intraelite conflict. More broadly, Scandal and Democracy examines how the media's use of new freedoms can help ward off a slide into pseudodemocracy or a return to authoritarian rule. As Indonesia marks the twentieth anniversary of its democratic revolution of 1998, it remains among the world's most resilient new democracies and one of the few successful democratic transitions in the Muslim world. McCoy explains the media's central role in this change and corroborates that finding with comparative cases from Mexico, Tunisia, and South Korea, offering counterintuitive insights that help make sense of the success and failure of recent transitions to democracy.

LA brings up bad—and bloody—memories for Billy, but a special request from the head of the network sends him flying across the country. Twenty years ago, before becoming a famous New York chef, Billy worked in LA at Chez Anisette. One unfortunate evening, the young hostess, Tiffany Arden, was murdered with a meat tenderizer. While Billy always suspected the head chef, Roger Charbonnet, to be the murderer, the case was never solved. Now, back in a city he never thought he’d return to, Billy is confronted by Roger, who is still determined to exact vengeance. After a horrifying explosion during taping kills more than Desmond O’Day’s chance at high ratings, Billy believes that he was the intended target—and that Roger was somehow involved. But when politics, infidelity, and high finance get sprinkled in, the case turns out to have more ingredients than Billy ever imagined. Filled with the high-style hilarity, insider info, and surefire suspense that are Al Roker’s series trademark, The Midnight Show Murders is a five-star feast for any fan of top-flight mystery fiction.

With determination and deadpan wit, he faces down a variety of villains—including vampires, werecats and ninjas—in Blood and Shadows, Michael E. E. Main's debut novel. The action is fast-paced, the characters individual, interesting and fun. I look forward to many sequels! —Marion Moore Hill, author of Bookmarked for Murder "That's the beauty of my position, Doctor Grimes. I can make a theory go a long way. See, I'm not a cop. The whole 'theory and fact and evidence leading to proof' thing is just one big grey area for me. If I can get a theory to hold together pretty well, then that's really all I need." I cracked my knuckles. "And, if the guy behind all this is a vampire—well, then he's not really alive, is he? So I don't have to worry about the 'legality' of putting a stake through his heart, and then running him through a tree shredder." Grimes stuck his nose in the air again. "How droll." Hard-boiled detective, Eric Baine, and his vampire/assassin sidekick, Azrael, battle ninjas, a vampire High Lord, and shadow demons in this dark, fast-paced fantasy. When Baine's sarcastic client disappears and he meets a mysterious Chinese woman with psychic powers, the story really heats up.

Book Murder Along the Cape Fear

  • Author : David T. Morgan
  • Publisher : Mercer University Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780865549661
  • Pages : 558 pages

Download or read book Murder Along the Cape Fear written by David T. Morgan and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder Along the Cape Fear is the story of Fayetteville and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, during the twentieth century. Seen through the eyes of a native son, this is the tale of one - a distinguished historian - who lived through some of it and heard about much of it from friends and relatives. In this hundred-year journey the town was profoundly impacted by the establishment of Fort Bragg 10 miles to its west. Throughout this hundred-year history, murder seems to be the scarlet thread that stitched the town into infamy. The book demonstrates that Fayetteville was by no means innocent prior to the coming of Fort Bragg. Nor did all of the crime and evil emanate from Fort Bragg after 1918. As for murder, there was an abundance of killing that had no connection with Fort Bragg, but the most sensational murder case of the century involved Jeffrey MacDonald, a Green Beret Army captain and physician who received three life terms in federal prison for killing his pregnant wife and two daughters. While many other Fort Bragg soldiers were involved with murders along the Cape Fear, murders were also committed by transient civilians and local citizens like the famous inventor of the M-1 carbine, Marshall "Carbine" Williams, and Velma Barfield, who poisoned her mother and three other people. In all, about two dozen murder cases-some highly publicized and some not-are woven into this story about a North Carolina town in the twentieth century. Engagingly told, this book is a wonderful blend of history, lore, and murder.
