Book The Nineteen Tragedies and Fragments of Euripides Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nineteen Tragedies and Fragments of Euripides, Vol. 1 of 3 Euripides was born in the island of Salamis, in the seventy-fifth Olympiad; his parents Mnesarchus and Clito having retired thither from Athens at the time that city was menaced by the powerful armament of Xerxes. Historians are by no means agreed as to the rank of our Poets Father and Mother: the proofs which some endeavour to adduce of their nobility do not appear by any means convincing; and if we admit the oracle of Apollo to have been consulted by them during the pregnancy of Clito, in regard to the fortunes of their future Child, as an attention to the voice of soothsayers is by no means peculiar to those of high birth or affluence, it might be too precipitate to conclude from thence, with Bayle, either that her station in life was superior to that of a 6 herb-woman, or that the distressed circumstances of her Husband were not among bis principal motives for changing the place of his abode. But whatever may have been the rank or occupation of Mnesarchus and Clito, they appear to have possessed the honourable title of free-born citizens of Athens. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedies of Euripides, Vol. 1 of 3: In English Verse Moral reflections. It does seem strange that the singers who during the present century have enriched English poetry with wealth of metrical variety lavish beyond all precedent, should have lived in vain for the translator of the Greek drama, especially since those magnificent notes of chorus-music were struck by the author Of Atalanta in Calydon and Erechtheus, after which the good Old Pindaric - Ode pattern, with its guilelessly capricious alternations of longs and shorts, seems curiously out Of date. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedies of Euripides, Vol. 1 The pleasure which we receive from the admired writings of antiquity, in a manner allies our minds to the minds of the illustrious writers we contract a love for them, and interest, ourselves in every circumstance that interested them. This affection, which arises from the love of excellence natural to the well-disposed mind, induces us to enquire after even. The minutest particulars of their lives and fortunes and Homer, poor and blind, is not less the object of our attention than his hero Achilles. The life of a retired scholar cannot indeed be supposed to present us with great and striking events; but it may convey more useful instructions, such as come nearer to our own business and bosoms; it may encourage the man of genius to exert his talents so as to render himself agreeable and usefiil to his fellow-citizens, to procure their esteem while he lives, and to preserve his name from oblivion, so dreaded by the generous mind. Few of the great writers of ancient times have a juster claim to this attention than the virtuous, the modest, the amiable Poet, with whose remaining works the English reader is now presented. Download or read book The Tragedies of Euripides Vol 3 of 3 written by Arthur S. Way and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedies of Euripides, Vol. 3 of 3: In English Verse While with respect to some of the plays in vol. ii, the translator might almost regard himself as challenging for them the attention of the English reader and the average student, he has, in this concluding volume, to take up the burden of attempting an adequate presentation of works whose fame so raises expectation as to add not a little to the formidable nature of his task. Hence I have, I trust, been not ungrateful for the strictures of some of my critics on preceding volumes, and have endeavoured to profit by them, the more willingly, as I cannot but recognise that their general tendency is in the direction of making the translation metrically more satisfactory, and so more readable. If in my blank verse these my counsellors (may I call them fellow-helpers?) still detect some of the old blemishes, I would ask that, before condemning me of obstinacy or of insensibility to rhythm, they will take note of the special difficulties involved in attempting to combine the four objects I have kept constantly before me, three of which seem to me to be essentials of every translation which claims to be more than a paraphrase. First, the English reader demands, not lexicon-language, but clear, straightforward, idiomatic English, free from all meaningless inversions which are simply evasions of metrical difficulties.
