Book excerpt: Traders traveling the Silk Road between China and Persia reintroduced alchemy to Europe in the thirteenth century after centuries of persecution. Followers of Hermes, the father of alchemy, operate under the philosophy that impurities and unhealthy attitudes and actions deplete a person's vital energies, overtaxing the organs and nerves which leads to disease. These same basic tenets have been adopted or discovered independently by subsequent Eastern and Western alchemical practitioners. Alchemy, whether Eastern or Western, has three important questions to explore: >Who am I and from where did I come? >What is my curriculum I am to learn in this life? >Where am I going? All people have in common nine aspects (called Palaces by the Chinese) through which we explore these questions in depth, both by engaging in the world and through introspection. In this new workbook, author Dr. Mark Holmes uses the Nine Transformations model as the basis for internal or spiritual alchemy, to support changing one's base personality traits into the golden elixir of the true self, so we become a "real human being" who expresses unconditional loving. The Palaces can be sources of joy or a lifelong challenge, depending upon one's viewpoint. Throughout this Workbook, Holmes helps you explore how to matriculate those Palaces in which we have karma/attachments by applying time-tested longevity techniques such as: -Meditations and visualizations -Understanding emotions and reframing beliefs -Transforming Five Thieves into Five Virtues -Balancing the Three Treasures/Three Selves -Tonifying organs and meridians -Adjusting diet, taking herbs, stimulating acupuncture points Join Dr. Holmes in self-discovery through the "Nine Transformations" workbook. Dr. Mark Holmes, OMD, L. Ac, Dipl. Chinese Herbs (NCCAOM) and Dipl. Acupuncture (NCCAOM), began his alchemy journey as an oriental philosophy major in the late 1960s. He graduated from formal Oriental medicine studies in Hong Kong in 1974 and developed a high-profile practice at his Center for Regeneration in Beverly Hills, which included such notables as Nobel Laureate Bishop Desmond Tutu, R. Buckminster Fuller, and many executives and actors in the entertainment industry. Dr. Holmes now facilitates Chinese alchemy seminars. Visit the author's website here: www.DrMarkHolmes.com

Book The Nine Behaviors for Effective Transformation

Download or read book The Nine Behaviors for Effective Transformation written by Fadi Takkale and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you are a manager looking for new ways to motivate your team or someone new to the corporate world looking for advice, The Nine Behaviors for Effective Transformation will teach you the skills you need to effect true transformation, either on a personal or an organizational level. Author, speaker, and developer of the mindset transformation shift, Fadi Takkale is quick to stress that his book is not about change. Change happens on a small, linear, limited level and can be quickly undone. Instead, Takkale focuses on big transformations. Through his guide, learn how to retrain your brain to think about success differently and become inspired to achieve goals you previously thought impossible. In his guide, Takkale also tackles some of the most common misconceptions about transformation and how to stop yourself from feeling stuck. He shows you that transformation isn't a cycle; it's a spiral upward. Goals are nothing without the mindset to achieve them. Cultivating this mindset is the first behavior Takkale encourages, but there are still eight others. Takkale doesn't just give you the foundation for great success but provides a ladder that reaches all the way to the top.

Book The Transformation of a Peasant Economy

Download or read book The Transformation of a Peasant Economy written by John Goodacre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market town has been dismissed as an incompletely formed urban community; in fact it was the primary urban unit in pre-industrial England. This study places the market town at the centre of the transformation of early-modern England, both catalysing changes in agriculture and experiencing, in a distinctive fashion, the urbanisation that was to occur a century or more later in the great industrial and commercial centres of Europe. In the two centuries after 1500 the rural economy changed from a pattern of subsistence to 'improved' farming. The first great enclosures took place during this time, but the economic base for this revolution was the growth of local trading, centred on markets and local communications networks. This redistribution of produce, provisions and information was the motor of specialisation and hence modernisation. The strength of this study is in its detailed research into this process in one representative locality, and the sensitive extrapolation of local experiences on to the national and European scale. By integrating in one book the themes of rural transformation and early urbanisation this account of one typical midland market town demonstrates the continuing vigour of the discipline of local history.

Book The Politics of Green Transformations

Download or read book The Politics of Green Transformations written by Ian Scoones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple ‘green transformations’ are required if humanity is to live sustainably on planet Earth. Recalling past transformations, this book examines what makes the current challenge different, and especially urgent. It examines how green transformations must take place in the context of the particular moments of capitalist development, and in relation to particular alliances. The role of the state is emphasised, both in terms of the type of incentives required to make green transformations politically feasible and the way states must take a developmental role in financing innovation and technology for green transformations. The book also highlights the role of citizens, as innovators, entrepreneurs, green consumers and members of social movements. Green transformations must be both ‘top-down’, involving elite alliances between states and business, but also ‘bottom up’, pushed by grassroots innovators and entrepreneurs, and part of wider mobilisations among civil society. The chapters in the book draw on international examples to emphasise how contexts matter in shaping pathways to sustainability Written by experts in the field, this book will be of great interest to researchers and students in environmental studies, international relations, political science, development studies, geography and anthropology, as well as policymakers and practitioners concerned with sustainability.

Book The Legacy Structure of Russia s One Hundred Year Transformation

Download or read book The Legacy Structure of Russia s One Hundred Year Transformation written by David Foley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and analysis of the post-Soviet Russian experience of political, economic and social change have generally focused attention on the complications and influences of the Soviet legacy on the transition process with most early main stream studies emphasizing the difficulties of the adoption of the institutions of democracy and a free market economy to the centralized command and control legacy structures carried over from that adjacent system to the more recent analyses that have attempted to explain why the Putinist hybrid authoritarian democracy emerged to take control of the Russian state. The complex nature of the Russian experience of political, social and economic change had yet to be explained as a long-term legacy analysis until now with the linkages presented in this study of the legacies and structures that have defied attempts at reform by the Bolsheviks, the Soviets and the modern Republicans. The political geography of Russia represents a districting system that defines the people and places and represents an influential legacy structure that has had a long reach from the Russia of Imperialism to the Russia of Putinism and the twenty first century. A clearer understanding of the influences the Imperial legacy brings to the Russian transformation enables the student of post-Soviet Russian transition an opportunity to contextualize the strong linkages of historical governance structures with the one hundred years of Bolshevik and Soviet system capture and the struggles of transformation faced by the government and people of Russia today.

Book Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism

Download or read book Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Medieval Japanese Buddhism written by Jacqueline I. Stone and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-05-31 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original enlightenment thought (hongaku shiso) dominated Buddhist intellectual circles throughout Japan’s medieval period. Enlightenment, this discourse claims, is neither a goal to be achieved nor a potential to be realized but the true status of all things. Every animate and inanimate object manifests the primordially enlightened Buddha just as it is. Seen in its true aspect, every activity of daily life—eating, sleeping, even one’s deluded thinking—is the Buddha’s conduct. Emerging from within the powerful Tendai School, ideas of original enlightenment were appropriated by a number of Buddhist traditions and influenced nascent theories about the kami (local deities) as well as medieval aesthetics and the literary and performing arts. Scholars and commentators have long recognized the historical importance of original enlightenment thought but differ heatedly over how it is to be understood. Some tout it as the pinnacle of the Buddhist philosophy of absolute non-dualism. Others claim to find in it the paradigmatic expression of a timeless Japanese spirituality. According other readings, it represents a dangerous anti-nomianism that undermined observance of moral precepts, precipitated a decline in Buddhist scholarship, and denied the need for religious discipline. Still others denounce it as an authoritarian ideology that, by sacralizing the given order, has in effect legitimized hierarchy and discriminative social practices. Often the acceptance or rejection of original enlightenment thought is seen as the fault line along which traditional Buddhist institutions are to be differentiated from the new Buddhist movements (Zen, Pure Land, and Nichiren) that arose during Japan’s medieval period. Jacqueline Stone’s groundbreaking study moves beyond the treatment of the original enlightenment doctrine as abstract philosophy to explore its historical dimension. Drawing on a wealth of medieval primary sources and modern Japanese scholarship, it places this discourse in its ritual, institutional, and social contexts, illuminating its importance to the maintenance of traditions of lineage and the secret transmission of knowledge that characterized several medieval Japanese elite culture. It sheds new light on interpretive strategies employed in pre-modern Japanese Buddhist texts, an area that hitherto has received a little attention. Through these and other lines of investigation, Stone problematizes entrenched notions of “corruption” in the medieval Buddhist establishment. Using the examples of Tendai and Nichiren Buddhism and their interactions throughout the medieval period, she calls into question both overly facile distinctions between “old” and “new” Buddhism and the long-standing scholarly assumptions that have perpetuated them. This study marks a significant contribution to ongoing debates over definitions of Buddhism in the Kamakura era (1185–1333), long regarded as a formative period in Japanese religion and culture. Stone argues that “original enlightenment thought” represents a substantial rethinking of Buddhist enlightenment that cuts across the distinction between “old” and “new” institutions and was particularly characteristic of the medieval period.
