Book Never Ending Nightmare

Download or read book Never Ending Nightmare written by Pierre Dardot and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism's war against democracy and how to resist it How do we explain the strange survival of the forces responsible for the 2008 economic crisis, one of the worst since 1929? How do we explain the fact that neoliberalism has emerged from the crisis strengthened? When it broke, a number of the most prominent economists hastened to announce the 'death' of neoliberalism. They regarded the pursuit of neoliberal policy as the fruit of dogmatism. For Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval, neoliberalism is no mere dogma. Supported by powerful oligarchies, it is a veritable politico-institutional system that obeys a logic of self-reinforcement. Far from representing a break, crisis has become a formidably effective mode of government. In showing how this system crystallized and solidified, the book explains that the neoliberal straitjacket has succeeded in preventing any course correction by progressively deactivating democracy. Increasing the disarray and demobilization, the so-called 'governmental' Left has actively helped strengthen this oligarchical logic. The latter could lead to a definitive exit from democracy in favour of expertocratic governance, free of any control. However, nothing has been decided yet. The revival of democratic activity, which we see emerging in the political movements and experiments of recent years, is a sign that the political confrontation with the neoliberal system and the oligarchical bloc has already begun.

After his rehabilitation, Scharpling committed himself to reinvention through the world of comedy. In this book he will lift the curtain on the turmoil that still follows him, despite all of his accolades and achievements. Book Going to Pieces

Download or read book Going to Pieces written by Adam Rockoff and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Carpenter's Halloween, released on October 25, 1978, marked the beginning of the horror film's most colorful, controversial, and successful offshoot--the slasher film. Loved by fans and reviled by critics for its iconic psychopaths, gory special effects, brainless teenagers in peril, and more than a bit of soft-core sex, the slasher film secured its legacy as a cultural phenomenon and continues to be popular today. This work traces the evolution of the slasher film from 1978 when it was a fledgling genre, through the early 1980s when it was one of the most profitable and prolific genres in Hollywood, on to its decline in popularity around 1986. An introduction provides a brief history of the Grand Guignol, the pre-cinema forerunner of the slasher film, films such as Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and cinematic trends that gave rise to the slasher film. Also explained are the slasher film's characteristics, conventions, and cinematic devices, such as the "final girl," the omnipotent killer, the relationship between sex and death, the significant date or setting, and the point-of-view of the killer. The chapters that follow are devoted to the years 1978 through 1986 and analyze significant films from each year. The Toolbox Murders, When a Stranger Calls, the Friday the 13th movies, My Bloody Valentine, The Slumber Party Massacre, Psycho II, and April Fool's Day are among those analyzed. The late 90s resurrection of slasher films, as seen in Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, is also explored, as well as the future direction of slasher films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). Following his highly successful An Askew View: The Films of Kevin Smith (Applause), John Kenneth Muir now turns to the life and work of legendary cult-film director Sam Raimi. Raimi exploded on the movie scene in 1982, when he was 23 years old, with the audacious, independently produced horror film The Evil Dead . Re-igniting the horror genre to such a degree that Wes Craven credited Raimi on-screen in A Nightmare on Elm Street , Raimi went on to direct two Evil Dead sequels, his own comic-book superhero, Darkman , and an over-the-top, post-modern western, The Quick and the Dead . Raimi's influence on other filmmakers continues to be enormous from the "shaky cam" shots of the Coen brothers to the early oeuvre of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, both of whom have been termed the "direct progeny" of Raimi's works. In 2002, Raimi's Spider-Man had the biggest opening weekend in history, earning more than $114 million at the box office. The Unseen Force also features a sneak peek at the much anticipated Spider-Man 2 . Included are 30 first-person accounts and interviews from a number of eclectic sources from the cinematographers who shot Raimi's early films to the producers, screenwriters, actors, special effects magicians and composers who collaborated to make his films the stuff of legend, earn mainstream success, and still be the focus of obsessive cult followings.

Book Quicklet on Khaled Hosseini s A Thousand Splendid Suns

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK “One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs, or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.” A Thousand Splendid Suns is a gripping story of two women learning how to survive under the thumb of an abusive husband in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Mariam grew up as the illegitimate daughter of a Herat businessman raised by a bitter and depressed single mother. Laila was the beloved daughter of a Kabul man who believed in a world where men and women are equal. When the circumstances of war bring them together under the roof of the cruel Rasheed, their only comfort is in the special bond of sisterhood they form during years cut off from the rest of the world. Khaled Hosseini weaves a tale of love and survival that begins during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1970s and ends with the American invasion and occupation in the early 2000s. Although ultimately a story of love and friendship, A Thousand Splendid Suns reveals the devastating affects of war on those caught in the middle – particularly women and children. MEET THE AUTHOR Lacey Kohlmoos is a writer, traveler and lover of the arts. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a BA in Drama & the Studies of Women and Gender, the only thing she knew for sure was that she wanted to travel. So, she embarked on a 10 1⁄2 month round-the-world trip, then traveled to Costa Rica where she spent one year teaching elementary school English in a small mountain town. Throughout her two years of travels, she's always kept a blog. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK At first, Rasheed treats Mariam well, albeit distantly. But, after she has multiple miscarriages he turns abusive. It becomes clear to Mariam that the only reason Rasheed married her was so that she would bear him sons. When she does not give her husband what he wants, Mariam finds herself trapped in a home with a man who believes that husbands should always keep a good handle on their wives. Living just down the street from Mariam and Rasheed is a young Kabul beauty – Laila. Though largely ignored by her mother, she is doted upon by her father Hakim who believes that women should be treated as equals to men. But, the reality of living in Soviet-occupied Afghanistan comes crashing down on Laila when her two older brothers are killed while fighting with the Mujaheedan. She finds comfort in Tariq, a slightly older neighborhood boy who protects Laila from bullies and other harm... Buy a copy to keep reading!

Book Coronavirus Psychoanalysis and Philosophy

Download or read book Coronavirus Psychoanalysis and Philosophy written by Fernando Castrillón and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in the European Journal of Psychoanalysis (EJP), the essays in this volume are a set of responses to the coronavirus crisis by distinguished philosophers and psychoanalysts from around the globe. The coronavirus irrupted making swift and deep cuts in the fabric of our existence: the risks of contagion and indefinite periods of isolation have radically altered the functioning of society. Pandemics do not wait for comprehension in order to proliferate. Confusion, sickness, and death punctuate the failure of governments worldwide to respond. This collection of writings examines the effects of the pandemic and the conditions that make possible such a global crisis. The writers provoke us to consider how capitalism, governmental power, and biopolitics mold the contours of life and death. The contributors in this collection ignite urgent political dialogue, address emergent transformations in the social field and offer perspectives on shifts in subjectivity and psychoanalytic practice. Beyond providing reflections on the impact of the coronavirus, the authors point to determinants of how the crisis will unfold and what may be on the horizon. This book will be invaluable to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, philosophers, and to all those interested in the implications of the virus for psychoanalytic practice and theory, and the social, cultural and political spheres of our world.

Book An Evening of Eternity

Download or read book An Evening of Eternity written by Patrick Conley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pete and Mary find their humdrum life interrupted dramatically by a spirit from the past. All on the surface appears banal and excruciatingly normal, but this ordinary couple must grapple with questions that otherwise they would have conveniently and blithely ignored. The title suggests one of the key questions that Mary and Pete explore. How can an evening—a measure of time—co-exist with eternity? How does time—a measure of past, present and future co-exist with an everlasting now, an eternity? Other questions abound once their comfortable but banal routine explodes with the arrival of these uninvited guests. Do animals possess a spirit? What happens when animals school humans? Is there a hell, and, if so, what is like? What of purgatory and heaven? These and other questions perplex the couple as they spend a most unusual evening of eternity.

She didn't care who or what all the blood on her hands, face, and clothes belonged to. The more she looked at the collapsed skull, the angrier she got, the tears flowing from her cheeks. She kept hitting it pointlessly with both of her hands, until that moment when the sadness suppressed the fury that had enveloped her body. No matter how much savagery she contributed just now, she could never go back to this morning. She couldn't save someone she loved so dearly. This regret, which she couldn't help, would grow into a tumour in her heart until the young woman took her last breath."
