He will return to school and maybe even go on to university; his mother will no longer have to break her back foraging wild food to sell at market; they will have the money to build a fine tomb for his aunt Okike; and his family’s status as ohu ma, the lowest Igbo caste, won’t matter anymore. But when his father is passed over for a younger man, breaking tradition, Dimkpa realizes that he must make his own fate. Journeying from his small village in rural Nigeria, to Lagos, Awka, and home again, Dimkpa learns that no money is easy money, that superstition runs deep, that knowledge is power, and that sometimes it is better to live in the present than to always be chasing a future just out of reach. Book excerpt: Amber Moon, starts her autobiography from her youngest age of two about the different abuses she endured while growing up through her adolescence years into her teenage years. Throughout the novel, she expresses the actions and emotions how she overcame her abuse in hopes to help others. A nice day out. I was only 4. My brother Tim and I had been home with my dad all week while mother has been working at the hospital taking care of patients. She's a LPN. After breakfast my dad came out back and told us we were going to the "icebox" to go fish with Rob today and we needed to get inside and get ready. Oh how I can remember my brother being so happy. Me...I felt panic. As I knew this was going to be a day of drinking and torture as it always was when my dad and his friend are together. We had gotten to the sink hole of a fishing place, it was back behind a lot of trees. I can still remember the smell to this day and how dirty it was. I often wondered why we ate the fish from that place. The water was always filled with trash. Yes, refrigerators too. Yet everyone in Hornell fished there. My dad set up the fishing rods on the bank and told me to sit on the ground that I wasn't good enough to sit in a chair, they are used only for men. As I watched my father, Rob and my brother all sit down in one. I sat in a pile of muddy grass patch that had trash in it. Crying, my dad slapped me across the face and asked me, "Do you want another?" As he raised his hand over his head. I curled up my legs and hugged them close to my chest in hopes I would not get hit again. Instead he pulls out his Polaroid from the back seat of his truck and takes a picture. As he yells, "Come on you little pussy."

Book What the Night Moon Said

Download or read book What the Night Moon Said written by Eleanor Crowe and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What The Night Moon Said is a compilation of reflections, stories and convictions gathered over the years of the author's life. Kay Redfield Jamison is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the author of "Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament", and the co-author of the standard medical text on manic-depressive illness. She herself lives in this shadow. Ms. Jamison believes research and history provide evidence that, for many, the bipolar condition has been an influencing factor in fostering their artistic spirit. After being diagnosed in her thirties, the author of this book finally understood her craving for expression as she traveled through rapidly changing horizons in the hills and valleys of her life. Most of this book was conceived and written at night under the still, hovering presence of the moon, which - although a speck in the universe - gifted her with peace and stability in the darkest times. Anyone who has sat alone and silent during the night, with only the click of a key or scratch of a pen to mark the hours, will understand.

Book The Confessions of a Number One Son

Download or read book The Confessions of a Number One Son written by Frank Chin and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, Frank Chin, the outspoken Chinese American author of such plays as The Chickencoop Chinaman and The Year of the Dragon, wrote a full-length novel that was never published and presumably lost. Nearly four decades later, Calvin McMillin, a literary scholar specializing in Asian American literature, would discover Chin’s original manuscripts and embark on an extensive restoration project. Meticulously reassembled from multiple extant drafts, Frank Chin’s “forgotten” novel is a sequel to The Chickencoop Chinaman and follows the further misadventures of Tam Lum, the original play’s witty protagonist. Haunted by the bitter memories of a failed marriage and the untimely death of a beloved family member, Tam flees San Francisco’s Chinatown for a life of self-imposed exile on the Hawaiian island of Maui. After burning his sole copy of a manuscript he believed would someday be hailed as “The Great Chinese American Novel,” Tam stumbles into an unlikely romance with Lily, a former nun fresh out of the convent and looking for love. In the process, he also develops an unusual friendship with Lily’s father, a washed-up Hollywood actor once famous for portraying Charlie Chan on the big screen. Thanks in no small part to this bizarre father/daughter pair, not to mention an array of equally quirky locals, Tam soon discovers that his otherwise laidback island existence has been transformed into a farce of epic proportions. Had it been published in the 1970s as originally intended, The Confessions of a Number One Son might have changed the face of Asian American literature as we know it. Written at the height of Frank Chin’s creative powers, this formerly “lost” novel ranks as the author’s funniest, most powerful, and most poignant work to date. Now, some forty years after its initial conception, The Confessions of a Number One Son is finally available to readers everywhere.
