Book The Art of Nigerian Women

Download or read book The Art of Nigerian Women written by Chukwuemeka Bosah and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Nigerian Women by Chukwuemeka Bosah is a tightly packaged tome--an astonishingly delightful companion to a meme that was broached in the author's A Celebration of Modern Nigerian Art: 101 Nigerian Artists, published in 2010. In the current volume, Bosah marshals the intellectual capacity of some of the best scholars and curatorial impresarios in the field to contextualize the diversity of works of the artists featured. This work is a feat that must be acknowledged by students of Nigerian art for a number of reasons. First, this book contributes significantly to our knowledge of Nigerian art by its lasered focus on Nigerian women. Second, the author brings to the fore, in the process, a smorgasbord of creative enactments and analyses in an assortment of media by our womenfolk. Third, while Nigeria now boasts of a budding tribe of scholars on the visual arts, this is the first time, to my knowledge, that a book of this type has been published. And this brings us to the fourth reason: this book is the irrefutable demonstration of the maxim about lions having their own historians to obviate distortions that hunters would bring to the history of the hunt. This is a pioneering work, one that deserves a prominent place on the shelves of corporate, institutional, college, and personal libraries. Bosah deserves our admiration for the courage and resources ploughed into this work.

Book excerpt: Nigeria is nicknamed the giant of Africa because of her large population. Without a doubt, her dense population results in cultural diversity with customs and traditions spread throughout her landscape. Despite the revolution sweeping the globe, certain customs and traditions still persist and are practiced even by the educated of her citizens. In Faade, author Ebiye Lavonne Garmel-Urumedji offers fifteen unique stories of women who are currently passing and have passed through painful challenges brought about by these long-standing customs and traditions. The selections tell of child marriage, female circumcision, emotional and physical abuse, polygamy, Abiku phenomenon, and more. The collection provides insight into the lives of these women who have learned from a tender age to hide their pain and keep their lives private. Told from the heart, Faade shares how some of them overcame their challenges, while other tales narrate how some women wallowed in their misery and allowed their sorrow to swallow them up. Meant to instill positivity into the lives of Nigerian women, this collection offers insight into challenges many face in todays world.

Book The Invention of Women

Download or read book The Invention of Women written by Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1997-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "woman question", this book asserts, is a Western one, and not a proper lens for viewing African society. A work that rethinks gender as a Western contruction, The Invention of Women offers a new way of understanding both Yoruban and Western cultures. Oyewumi traces the misapplication of Western, body-oriented concepts of gender through the history of gender discourses in Yoruba studies. Her analysis shows the paradoxical nature of two fundamental assumptions of feminist theory: that gender is socially constructed in old Yoruba society, and that social organization was determined by relative age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ogunyemi uses the novels to trace a Nigerian women's literary tradition that reflects an ideology centered on children and community. Of prime importance is the paradoxical Mammywata figure, the independent, childless mother, who serves as a basis for the postcolonial woman in the novels and in society at large. Ogunyemi tracks this figure through many permutations, from matriarch to writer, her multiple personalities reflecting competing loyalties. This sustained critical study counters prevailing "masculinist" theories of black literature in a powerful narrative of the Nigerian world.

Book Women and the Nigeria Biafra War

Download or read book Women and the Nigeria Biafra War written by Gloria Chuku and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first comprehensive study of the Nigeria-Biafra War (1967-1970) through the lens of gender explores the valiant and gallant ways women carried out old and new responsibilities in wartime and immediate postwar Nigeria. The book presents women as embodiments of vulnerability and agency, who demonstrated remarkable resilience and initiative, waging war on all fronts in the face of precarious conditions and scarcities, and maximizing opportunities occasioned by the hostilities. Women’s experiences are highlighted through critical analyses of oral interviews, memoirs, life histories, fashion and material culture, international legal conventions, music, as well as governmental and non-governmental sources. The book fills the gap in the war scholarship that has minimized women’s complex experiences fifty years after the hostilities ended. It highlights the cost of the conflict on Nigerian women, their participation in the hostilities, and their contributions to the survival of families, communities and the country. The chapters present counter-narratives to fictional and nonfictional accounts of the war, especially those written by men, which often peripheralize or stereotypically represent women as passive spectators or helpless victims of the conflict; and also highlight and exaggerate women’s moral laxity and sensationalize their marital infidelities.
