This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an effort to condense the totality of Nigeria's external relations and foreign policy, activities, accomplishments and shortcomings, during the thirty years of military rule 1966 to 1999 into a single volume. It intends to close a gap in the literature on this period; in which writers tended to concentrate on individual regimes and events, ignoring or glossing over the bigger picture. The work is organised chronologically. It begins with a section on the foundation, principles nd purposes of Nigerian foreign policy. It then discusses the Yakubu Gown period 1966-1975 in the context of domestic instability civil war and foreign policy. Chapters follow on the period of Murtala Muhammed 1975-1976, Obasanjo 1976-1979, and Nigeria as a new African power; Buhari, xenophobia and the beginning of isolation; the Babangida period and the new optimism; and the return to the dark times and international isolation with Sani Abacha. The final chapters consider the new civil beginnings in Nigeria since 1999, and offer an overall evaluation of the outcomes of military rule. The author is a specialist in international relations based at University of Ife, Nigeria.

Book Nigerian Foreign Policy Under Military Rule 1966 1999

Download or read book Nigerian Foreign Policy Under Military Rule 1966 1999 written by Olayiwola Abegunrin and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abegunrin provides a significant and comprenhensive examination of Nigerian foreign policy (1966-1999) during the almost 33 years of military rule, punctuated by the four-year civilian interregnum, 1979-1983. He analyzes what led to the military rule in 1966, and the foreign policy performance of each military regime that ruled the country since 1966. He also discusses extensively the economic dimension of the nation's foreign policy. He shows that the last 15 years, the period of Generals Babangida and Abacha, were the most corrupt and brutal that Nigeria had seen since independence. The mysterious sudden death of General Sani Abacha led to the appointment of General Abubakar, who handed power over to an elected civilian government in May 1999, led by President Olusegun Obasanjo. Of particular interest to scholars, students, and other researchers involved with African politics and foreign policy and the role of the military in politial affairs.

Expert contributors, comprising academics and scholar-diplomats, analyse Nigeria's most vital domestic challenges and critical regional issues from historical and contemporary perspectives. Nigeria's relations with its neighbours and other significant states and regional and international bodies also come under scrutiny. The debates here, while multi-faceted, share the premise that an effective foreign policy must be built on a sound domestic base and democratic stability."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Defence Policy of Nigeria Capability and Context

Download or read book Defence Policy of Nigeria Capability and Context written by Charles Quarker Dokubo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Reader provides a structurally coherent explanation and review of the magnified role conception and organizational task expansion for the Nigerian military establishment in foreign policy. It argues essentially that one of the most problematic and intractable areas of public policy in Nigeria since the Civil War concerns the development of a professional defence establishment adequate to meet the challenges arising from the altered parameters of iour security environment. The correction of this condition is the primary motivation of the Armed Forces modernization and augmentation program that touches upon all elements of Nigeria's military power. This Reader is at once a review and a critique of the major facets of this modernization and augmentation process of the Nigerian armed forces within the operative context of the changing dimension of threat perception and the strategic parameters that have guided Nigerian military planning since the Civil War in 1970.
