Liverpool alone has under taken the conquest of the land, and through Liverpool all the trade between Great Britain and this part of Africa passes. The passenger traffic is so limited. That the boats of the African Steamship Company and the British and African Line, which run in conjunction with each other, are easily able to deal with it. These boats rarely exceed 3000 tons gross, and their highest speed under favour able circumstances is not more than 10 knots. Through a variety of in-depth case studies, including the DRC, Sierra Leone and Liberia, this comprehensive volume shows how important informal political and economic networks are in many of the continent’s conflict areas. Moreover, it demonstrates that without a proper understanding of the impact of these networks, attempts to formalize African states, particularly those emerging from wars, will be in vain.
