Along with her sister Amy, Angela then studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. She was quite late in taking up writing, developing a strong interest in Welsh mythology, and at first wrote a few magazine articles on mythology and nature. It was possibly thanks to her sister Amy that she finally began work on a novel at the age of 35. Exceptionally with respect to many of her contemporaries writing in this vein, Brazil did not write any books in a series - each stood on its own with different characters every time. These were considered to deal accurately and sympathetically with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls, including the tangle of emotional friendships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Nicest Girl in the School - A School Story" is a classic girls' story by English author Angela Brazil. Much like the majority of Brazil's work, the story is set in a traditional English girls' school and follows the vicissitudes and triumphs of its young residents. A wonderfully-entertaining and charming tale, "The Nicest Girl in the School - A School Story" is ideal for young girls and those with an interest in the origins of schoolgirl literature. Angela Brazil (1868 - 1947) was an English author most famous for being one of the first writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories." Her stories were presented from the characters' point of view and were written primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. During the first half of the 20th century, Brazil published nearly 50 such books, with the vast majority being set in English boarding schools. Brazil's work had a significant influence on changing the nature of fiction for girls. Her charters were chiefly young females, active, independent, and aware. Brazil's books were often considered to be immoral and deviant, leading to their being burned or banned by many Headteachers in girls schools across Britain. Other notable works by this author include: "The School in the Forest" (1944), "Three Terms at Uplands" (1945), "The School on the Loch" (1946). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Patty's father was a busy doctor in the small country town of Kirkstone. He was out nearly the whole day long, driving about in his high gig to visit people in distant farms and villages, and had very little time to give to his own family, so they were obliged to make the most of the few delightful half-hours he could manage to spare for them now and then. Patty, as his eldest daughter, held a special place in his heart. She was already quite a nice companion for him, and I think there was no greater treat for both than on those occasions when she was able to tuck herself into the gig by his side, ready to open gates, and hold the reins while he paid his visits. Book excerpt: "ONLY one day more," cried Patty Hirst, surveying with deep interest the large new box which stoodby the side of the chest of drawers in her bedroom; "just one day! How dreadfully quickly the timehas come! I feel quite queer when I think about it. I can scarcely believe that before the end of theweek both I and my luggage will be a whole hundred miles away, and settled at Morton Priory. I dowonder how I shall like it?""Very much, I hope," replied her mother, pausing for a moment in her task of packing the neatpiles of linen and underclothing into as small a compass as possible. "I'm sure it seems a delightfulschool, and you are an extremely lucky girl to be going there.""Yes," said Patty, with a rather doubtful tone in her voice, sitting down on the edge of the bed, and beginning to turn over the pocket handkerchiefs, the new blouses, the ties, hair ribbons, andother articles which made up her schoolgirl outfit; "I suppose I am lucky. Perhaps it may be nicerthan I think. I wanted to go dreadfully when Uncle Sidney first wrote about it, but somehow nowthat it's got almost to starting off, do you know I feel as if I'd changed my mind, and I'm not at allsure that I wouldn't rather stay at home. It seems too horrible to have to go amongst so many newirls.

"Of course you will feel strange just at first, but you will soon getover your shyness. It will be quite a fresh world for you, and a very interesting one. I expect to havethe most enthusiastic letters from you when you have been there for a few weeks.""It will be different from Miss Dawson's, at any rate," said Patty."I hope it will. Miss Dawson's is the best school we have in Kirkstone, but it is only moderatelygood. I can't be too glad for you to have this opportunity of going to a better one. Give me yourstockings, dear, and the workbasket; I've a corner I want to fill up here."Patty sat watching her mother's deft fingers in silence for a moment or two, only handing herfrom time to time the things which she required. She gave a little sigh of satisfaction as she saw allher belongings stowed away in the big box; she had never had so many new possessions in her lifebefore, and in the pleasure of owning them felt some slight compensation for the wrench of partingfrom home.
