Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nicene Creed The true history of our Nicene Creed is at last emerging from obscurity. The old theory that the Creed of the Council of Nicaea of 325 A.D. was slightly altered and enlarged at the Council of Constantinople in 381 A.D., is still maintained in most of the text-books on the Prayer Book, and has recently found support from a learned Professor of the Eastern Orthodox Church. But its foundations have been undermined by recent research. It was a French scholar, Denys Petau, better known as Petavius (+ 1652), of Paris, who first pointed out that our Nicene Creed had been quoted by the historian S. Epiphanius some seven years before the Council of Constantinople. But it was reserved for an English scholar, Professor Hort, two centuries later, to discern the importance of the argument which may be built up on that fact. In his brilliant Dissertation he proved that the Creed thus quoted by S. Epiphanius was a Revision of the Creed of the Church of Jerusalem, most probably revised and enlarged by Bishop Cyril, who in serted a section taken out of the Creed of the Nicene Council. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nicene Creed: A Manual for the Use of Candidates for Holy Orders It is, perhaps, necessary that I should explain my reasons for adding one more to the vast number of books which pour forth in so continuous a stream in the present day. Four reasons have mainly weighed with me. The first is, that my experience as an examiner of candidates for Holy Orders has convinced me that many of them obtain their knowledge of the first principles of the religion which they propose to teach, in a very unsatisfactory and haphazard way. This is partly due to the absence, at least until lately, of satisfactory text books. Few candidates attempt to read Pearson's great standard work on the subject, and most of those who have attempted it find him very abstruse and difficult to follow. Moreover, it must be admitted that in a good many respects, in spite of the still inestimable value of the work, Pearson's manner and matter are out of date. This has been so ably pointed out by one whose name must ever be held in reverence by Cambridge men of my own standing, Bishop Harvey Goodwin, in his Foundations of the Creed, that I need do no more on this point than shelter myself under the authority of his name. Next, I believe that there is urgent need for a restatement of theological truth in the light of recent scientific discovery, such as has been attempted by Professor Allen in his Continuity of Religious Thought, and by my friend Mr. Heard in his suggestive volume, The Old and New Theology. The first principles of the Christian faith remain, and we may venture to say will ever remain, unchanged. They are above and beyond all criticism. But the manner in which it has been customary to explain them, and recommend them to the hearts and consciences of mankind, will be found to have varied considerably according to the scientific prepossessions and current intellectual and moral conceptions of those to whom the teachers have had to address themselves. There never has been a greater need to bear this in mind than at the present moment. I ventured to say as much at the Congress at Norwich last year, and was as much surprised as pleased to find that I had the general assent of my audience. It contains the summary and substance of lectures and instructions which for several years I have been accustomed to give to students and pupils; and in it I have endeavoured to explain the twelve Articles of the Creed, as well as the more recent definitions and declarations of the Church on matters of faith as contained in the decrees of the Vatican Council, and the constitutions of the Sovereign Pontiffs. I have not thought it necessary to make the work in any sense a controversial one, because I believe that a clear and accurate exposition of Catholic doctrine is the best means of promoting its knowledge, and the best remedy against misrepresentations, and the dishonest criticisms of our adversaries; and also the best refutation of the many false theories of Christianity against which we have to contend, in order to guard the true doctrine of Christ, and make it known to the people. In the manner of treating the subject, I first give an introductory treatise on the virtue of faith, together with the full text of all the "Creeds" that are approved by the Church, and professed by the faithful. Afterwards, I give the text of the "Apostles' Creed" and of the "Nicene Creed" at the head of each Article as the subject of the instructions and explanations which follow. In the explanation of the Articles I state the doctrine, explain its meaning, and then give the proofs of its truth, taken from the usual Theological sources - Sacred Scripture, Tradition, the definitions of the Church, the authority of Fathers and Theologians, and reason.
