Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an informal history and tour of the Niagara Escarpment, the backbone of Ontario and one of Canada's natural wonders. Stretching from Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula to Niagara Falls, the escarpment exhibits a wide diversity of landscape, people, and industry, in the present and in the past. The authors have divided it into three major regions. the rugged northern region which retains much of its primitive beauty serves primarily as a haven for tourists and summer residents, although it was once a centre for fishing and lumbering. Change has come also to the middle area. Its waterpower once made it an industrial region, but today the land from Meaford to Dundas is largely agricultural. The south, so rich in the early history of Canada, is heavily settled and industrialized. Over 80 photographs, taken by William H. Gillard, who himself lives on 'the mountain,' capture the various facets of the region. The rugged cliffs of the Bruce Peninsula contrast with the pastoral lands beneath Mount Nemo; the neatly trimmed harbour at Tobermory counterpoints the Dundas swamp of Coote's Paradise. We see the interplay of industry and agriculture, from Owen Sound's grain elevators through Hamilton's blast furnaces to Jordan's vineyards, and recreation and culture, from tourist landmarks through Hockley Hills skiing to the museums of history and art. The text provides entertaining glimpses of some of the people and some of the events in the history of settlement and growth, proceeding from town to town, north to south. This readable book is the first to deal with the landscape and history of the entire Niagara Escarpment. It is a useful guide to one of the most interesting and historic areas of Canada.

Book excerpt: ...makes some notable contributions to the popular and scholarly literature about the Niagara region...a welcome addition to the literature of US-Canada cross-border studies. -The Canadian Historical Review...provides a most engaging and eloquently written story, a learned tale of the Niagara region's associated historical triumphs and abiding challenges. The book's geographical and social histories will be of interest not only to residents of the Niagara Frontier but to anyone who has ever been fascinated by the complexly related natural and technological wonders that have helped to make Niagara one of the world's most famous and enduring icons. -ISLEThis in-depth regional study of the Niagara Frontier traces the evolution of landscape and patterns of settlement on both sides of the Niagara River extending from St. Catharines, Ontario, to Lockport, New York. This significant region, astride an international frontier, both connects and separates, unites and divides Canadian and American territories bordering the Niagara River.Like map overlays that build on an underlying base geography, Professor Jackson's chronological approach begins with the qualities of the physical background and their ongoing ramifications up to the present for the use and development of land. He then adds the Native settlements, showing their trails and economic activities, while highlighting the amazing fact that certain Native features remain an intrinsic part of the modern landscape. The next time period reveals that the previous human landscapes, once continuous across the Niagara River, became acutely discontinuous with the creation in 1783 of an unseen but divisive international boundary.Subsequent chapters follow the changes over the course of time as canals, railways, hydroelectric power, and the dominance of the automobile in the present era all transform the environment. Jackson also discusses Niagara Falls as the fulcrum around which the Niagara Frontier has developed and the impact of the tourist industry on the region. This thorough analysis of an important international region will be of great use to students of regional, urban, and historical geography as well as to anyone involved in cross-boundary trade, education, or tourism.John N. Jackson (St. Catharines, Ontario) is professor emeritus of applied geography at Brock University and the author of fourteen previous books on regional geography and history.John Burtniak (St. Catharines), now retired, was the special collections librarian and university archivist at Brock University.Gregory P. Stein (Buffalo, NY) is associate professor of geography and planning at SUNY College at Buffalo.

Book The Niagara Escarpment

Download or read book The Niagara Escarpment written by and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 2006-10-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 100 beautiful colour photographs from dozens of communities, this book will be savoured by all those who treasure this precious landscape The Niagara Escarpment stretches more than 700 kilometres from Niagara Falls, through Hamilton, to Tobermory on the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, before dipping under Georgian Bay. Designated a United Nations biosphere reserve in 1990, the meandering ridge is home to over 300 bird species and other wildlife, many of Ontario's rare plant species, and the oldest old-growth forest east of the Rocky Mountains. The Bruce Trail, the pre-eminent walking trail in southern Ontario, created by naturalists working with private landowners, now winds along its length. The photographs of Sandy Bell, Vic MacBournie and John MacRae, taken from more than seventy points south to north, show the Escarpment in all its variety, moods and seasons. Providing background on the story of the protection of this precious landform -- and the continuing challenge of demands for resource extraction and urban expansion -- is an introductory essay by Joan Little, a resident and friend of the Escarpment who has worked with citizens and government to preserve its unique features.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975 a group of distinguished American and Canadian geologists agreed to pool their knowledge to write about the geologically fascinating resource they shared. Colossal Cataract is the result of their five-year collaboration to provide both geologists and general readers with the first comprehensive geological history of Niagara Falls since 1914. How and why the Falls were formed and how the Niagara Frontier has evolved through natural processes and through man's efforts to benefit from the dynamic power of the Falls is described in a succinct history. A chapter forecasts the possible future of the Falls, taking the natural erosion rate and the technological options for directing it into account. The authors both correct some misconceptions about the geology of the Falls and offer a new interpretation of the structure of the bedrock. A chapter on paleontology describes the fossils that have been deposited and which might still be found. Attached to the book is a 25 x 32" four-color map, the only available detailed geological map of the Niagara area. The map shows the bedrock distribution and incorporates the latest geological data. Appendixes offer a glossary of geologic terms, Niagara statistics, stratigraphy, a road guide to points of interest, and a summary of museum exhibits in the Niagara region.

Book The Last Stand

  • Author : Peter E. Kelly
  • Publisher : Dundurn
  • Release : 2007-05-31

Download or read book The Last Stand written by Peter E. Kelly and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most ancient and least disturbed forest ecosystem in eastern North America clings to the vertical cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. Prior to 1988 it had escaped detection even though the entire forest was in plain view and was being visited by thousands upon thousands of people every year. The reason no one had discovered the forest was that the trees were relatively small and lived on the vertical cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. The Last Stand reveals the complete account of the discovery of this ancient forest, of the miraculous properties of the trees forming this forest (eastern white cedar), and of what is was like for researchers to live, work and study within this forest. The unique story is told with text, with stunning colour photographs and through vivid first-hand accounts. This book will stand the test of time as a testament to science, imagination and discovery.
