Book Four Years in the Cauldron

Download or read book Four Years in the Cauldron written by Brian O’Donovan and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE IRISH BOOK AWARDS 2021 The riveting story of a nation at a crucial crossroads From the start of his stint as RTÉ's Washington Correspondent Brian O'Donovan's lively and authoritative reporting of a tumultuous period in American life has been must-watch TV. Four Years in the Cauldron is his account of four busy years working in the US. He draws a compelling picture, full of telling colour and detail, of covering its fractured politics, particularly the extraordinary presidency of Donald Trump and the knife-edge election of Joe Biden. And he gives his unique perspective on big stories such as the Covid emergency, the Capitol riot, the murder of George Floyd and trial and conviction of his police killer. He also provides a visceral sense of what it's like living in a country shaped by guns, God, far-fetched conspiracy theories and the running sore of racism. Yet, drawing on his network of contacts, neighbours, friends and family connections outside the white-hot heat of Washington politics, he writes about the lives of ordinary American people with nuance and understanding. Four Years in the Cauldron is a must-read for getting to grips with the US at a moment of profound reckoning. ______ '[O'Donovan] captures well both the frenetic life of a reporter . . . and the Punch and Judy period in American politics that was the Trump presidency' Irish Times 'An intriguing look at an extraordinary time . . . the book brings us to some fascinating places' Ryan Tubridy 'A great read' The Last Word With Matt Cooper

Book Behind the Scenes or Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House

Download or read book Behind the Scenes or Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House written by Elizabeth Keckley and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the Scenes is the life story of Elizabeth Keckley, a shrewd entrepreneur who, while enslaved, raised enough money to purchase freedom for herself and her son. Keckley moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a seamstress and dressmaker for the wives of influential politicians. She eventually became a close confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln. Several years after President Lincoln's assassination, when Mrs. Lincoln's financial situation had worsened, Keckley helped organize an auction of the former first lady's dresses, eliciting strong criticism from members of the Washington elite. Behind the Scenes is, therefore, both a slave narrative and Keckley's attempt to defend the motives behind the auction. However, the book's publication prompted an even greater public outcry, with the added racial subtext of white society's disdain for Keckley's audacity in publishing details of the Lincolns' private lives. Keckley's dressmaking business failed, the Lincoln family cut all ties with her, and she lived out her final days in a home for the indigent. Scholars have acknowledged the book's valuable account of slave life as well as its intimate view into the Lincoln White House. Biographers of the Lincolns have quoted extensively from Keckley's text. A DOCSOUTH BOOK. Book excerpt: Tom Ryan is the oldest of five Irish Catholic children. Through his eyes, the story of his younger brother, Harry, unfolds: "Growing up, Harry was always the shining star of the family. He was the one you'd name if you were trying to think of kids who were holy, and the one I'd list as a brown-nosing little punk who deserved to get beat up on the playground for making it hard on the rest of us. He was the one God, and Grandma Ryan, had called to the priesthood."But Harry took a different path and chose not to enter the seminary, and eventually, not to be a Catholic. When he left for college he left for good."Not that I cared, but for four years, Harry never came home. No one spoke of him at the dinner table or wondered aloud how he was doing or why he had changed. His picture disappeared from the mantle. It was as if he had ceased to exist, had never existed, that the shining star had been but a passing comet lost in time and memory. It hurt Mom and Dad a lot." It's Christmas 1972, Harry's senior year, and the Ryan family has gathered for the holiday, all except Harry... _______________________________________ Read the sequel!"A Cape May Diamond," the sequel to "Four Years from Home" is out on Kindle and in paperback from Amazon.
