Book Forging a British World of Trade

Download or read book Forging a British World of Trade written by David Thackeray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brexit is likely to lead to the largest shift in Britain's economic orientation in living memory. Some have argued that leaving the EU will enable Britain to revive markets in Commonwealth countries with which it has long-standing historical ties. Their opponents maintain that such claims are based on forms of imperial nostalgia which ignore the often uncomfortable historical trade relations between Britain and these countries, as well as the UK's historical role as a global, rather than chiefly imperial, economy. Forging a British World of Trade explores how efforts to promote a 'British World' system, centred on promoting trade between Britain and the Dominions, grew and declined in influence between the 1880s and 1970s. At the beginning of the twentieth century many people from London, to Sydney, Auckland, and Toronto considered themselves to belong to culturally British nations. British politicians and business leaders invested significant resources in promoting trade with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa out of a perception that these were great markets of the future. However, ideas about promoting trade between 'British' peoples were racially exclusive. From the 1920s onwards, colonized and decolonizing populations questioned and challenged the basis of British World networks, making use of alternative forms of international collaboration promoted firstly by the League of Nations, and then by the United Nations. Schemes for imperial collaboration amongst ethnically 'British' peoples were hollowed out by the actions of a variety of political and business leaders across Asia and Africa who reshaped the functions and identity of the Commonwealth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion of the British state was neither automatic nor accidental. Rather, it was the outcome of recurring battles over the proper boundaries of the state and its role in economy and society. The Politics of State Expansion focuses on the interests arrayed on either side of this struggle; providing a new and critical perspective on the growth of the `Keynsian welfare state' and on the more recent retreat from Keynes and from collective provision.

Book Managing the British Economy

Download or read book Managing the British Economy written by Richard Bailey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968 Managing the British Economy attempts to trace the development of what has passed for economic planning in Britain in the 1960’s and, at the same time, to observe the activities of those engaged in the operation and the effect of their actions on business and industry. In writing this book, the author has had in mind the difficulties of businessmen in keeping track of ‘who does what’ in the Economy. Experience in industry and in the field of management education has shown him that managers often have difficulties in placing their own operations in the national context and he attempts here to help the reader understand how the system works in practice. How do the new arrangements tie in with the old? How does any government influence the running of the economy? What kind of system are we moving towards? This is a must read for scholars and researchers of British economy and economic history of Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Britain's economic policy revolution in the 1960s achieve so little? Drawing on the latest political science theories of policy networks and policy learning, Hugh Pemberton outlines a new model of economic policy making and then uses it to interrogate recently-released government documents. Book We Too Can Prosper

Download or read book We Too Can Prosper written by Graham Hutton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-26 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1953, We Too Can Prosper is the outcome of a unique collaboration between Mr. Graham Hutton, the author, Mr. Geoffrey Crowther, his friend and fellow economist, and a panel of experts nominated by the employers’ organisations and trade unions represented on the British Productivity Council. The Council invited the author and Mr. Crowther, as independent economists, to bring together the experience of the 66 Productivity Teams which visited America since 1949 and combine it with their own expert knowledge of economic conditions on both sides of the Atlantic, to throw light on Britain’s industrial future. The book covers an enormous range of subjects: from education to mechanisation, from consumers’ habits to advertising, and from the rate of installing capital equipment to the roles of government, competition and ‘bigness in business.’ Painstakingly, simply and logically, the book shows that if the British people want to overcome recurrent economic crises and raise their standards of life, they can do so quickly, provided they organise to do so. This book will be of interest to students of economics, economic history and development.
