So what if the one thing he’s missing is a person to share that life with? Experience has proved he can’t get what he wants and needs out of a relationship. Yet he can’t stop wanting his next door neighbor and wishing there could be more between them. Dylan Pomeroy might be young, but knows what he wants: Mark. He continually inserts himself into the older man’s life, determined to show Mark that he’s exactly what Mark needs. But Mark worries that the difference in their ages, and his need to be cared for, are hurdles too big to overcome. But Dylan won’t be deterred, and Mark begins to realize his worries are unfounded. Dylan shows Mark he’s the perfect man for him. But years of being rejected for his wants makes it difficult for Mark to hope that things between them will work out. Can Mark let go of his insecurities and let himself fall in love with Dylan?

Book excerpt: Derek My new neighbor was going to be the death of me. Late night parties, early morning noise, and her uncontrollable dog digging up my yard. The peace and quiet I’d had for years was gone with one SOLD sign and a moving truck. But that wasn’t even the worst of it. Oh, no. The biggest problem I had with my new neighbor was those tiny shorts that hugged her curves and made my mouth water. Those shorts were the reason I kept my distance. I was either going to strangle her or claim her. Which one was a toss-up. Chelsea I should have asked around before I bought my new house. I would have found out I was moving in next to the most uptight man in my small town. A man who thought it should be lights out at eight, and silence for a full twelve hours. Not all of us had that schedule, buddy. After yet another note on my door threatening to call the cops on me and my new puppy, I decided to pay my new neighbor a visit. I didn’t expect to find his son sitting on the porch. Alone. Locked out and scared. Or for my heart to squeeze so painfully when he accepted my offer of a cookie and a warm place to wait until his dad to got home. Maybe I was too quick to judge. Because a kid so sweet couldn’t possibly come from a man who was so rude. Or maybe there was more to the single dad next door.

Book excerpt: Examines the role violence plays in maintaining housing segregation Despite increasing racial tolerance and national diversity, neighborhood segregation remains a very real problem in cities across America. Scholars, government officials, and the general public have long attempted to understand why segregation persists despite efforts to combat it, traditionally focusing on the issue of “white flight,” or the idea that white residents will move to other areas if their neighborhood becomes integrated. In Hate Thy Neighbor, Jeannine Bell expands upon these understandings by investigating a little-examined but surprisingly prevalent problem of “move-in violence:” the anti-integration violence directed by white residents at minorities who move into their neighborhoods. Apprehensive about their new neighbors and worried about declining property values, these residents resort to extra-legal violence and intimidation tactics, often using vandalism and verbal harassment to combat what they view as a violation of their territory. Hate Thy Neighbor is the first work to seriously examine the role violence plays in maintaining housing segregation, illustrating how intimidation and fear are employed to force minorities back into separate neighborhoods and prevent meaningful integration. Drawing on evidence that includes in-depth interviews with ordinary citizens and analysis of Fair Housing Act cases, Bell provides a moving examination of how neighborhood racial violence is enabled today and how it harms not only the victims, but entire communities. By finally shedding light on this disturbing phenomenon, Hate Thy Neighbor not only enhances our understanding of how prevalent segregation and this type of hate-crime remain, but also offers insightful analysis of a complex mix of remedies that can work to address this difficult problem.

Book Argument and Inference

Download or read book Argument and Inference written by Gregory Johnson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough and practical introduction to inductive logic with a focus on arguments and the rules used for making inductive inferences. This textbook offers a thorough and practical introduction to inductive logic. The book covers a range of different types of inferences with an emphasis throughout on representing them as arguments. This allows the reader to see that, although the rules and guidelines for making each type of inference differ, the purpose is always to generate a probable conclusion. After explaining the basic features of an argument and the different standards for evaluating arguments, the book covers inferences that do not require precise probabilities or the probability calculus: the induction by confirmation, inference to the best explanation, and Mill's methods. The second half of the book presents arguments that do require the probability calculus, first explaining the rules of probability, and then the proportional syllogism, inductive generalization, and Bayes' rule. Each chapter ends with practice problems and their solutions. Appendixes offer additional material on deductive logic, odds, expected value, and (very briefly) the foundations of probability. Argument and Inference can be used in critical thinking courses. It provides these courses with a coherent theme while covering the type of reasoning that is most often used in day-to-day life and in the natural, social, and medical sciences. Argument and Inference is also suitable for inductive logic and informal logic courses, as well as philosophy of sciences courses that need an introductory text on scientific and inductive methods.

CIA analyst Beth Bradford has it all— Until she doesn’t. Now, facing an empty nest and a broken marriage, Beth is moving from the cul-de-sac she’s long called home, and the CIA is removing her from the case that’s long been hers: tracking an elusive Iranian intelligence agent known as The Neighbor. Madeline Sterling moves into Beth’s old house. She has what Beth once had: an adoring husband, three beautiful young children, and the close-knit group of neighbors on the block. Now she has it all. And Beth—who can’t stop watching the woman stepping in to her old life—thinks the new neighbor has something else too: ties to Iranian intelligence. Is Beth just jealous? Paranoid? Or is something more at play? After all, most of the families on the cul-de-sac have some tie to the CIA. They’re all keeping secrets. And they all know more about their neighbors than they should. It would be the perfect place to insert a spy—unless one was there all along.
