Book Science politics and society in early nineteenth century Ireland

Download or read book Science politics and society in early nineteenth century Ireland written by Allan Blackstock and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the pivotal period immediately after the Irish Union from the unique perspective of the Reverend William Richardson (1740–1820). A clerical polymath, Richardson’s activities ranged from Ulster politics to international scientific debates. His private correspondence adds to our knowledge of central Ulster before and during the 1798 rebellion and provides insights into the tensions between Irish provincial science and the metropolitan scientific world. The book is based on extensive primary research, including material new to Irish historiography, and follows the political and scientific themes of Richardson’s career in a broadly chronological sweep, assessing the role of various shaping features, including religion, politics, personality and Enlightenment ideology, and analysing each theme in terms of its broad contemporary historical significance. This book will appeal to students and academics with an interest in the period, or politics, religion or science.

Download or read book Forgetful Remembrance written by Guy Beiner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-10 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgetful Remembrance examines the paradoxes of what actually happens when communities persistently endeavour to forget inconvenient events. The question of how a society attempts to obscure problematic historical episodes is addressed through a detailed case study grounded in the north-eastern counties of the Irish province of Ulster, where loyalist and unionist Protestants — and in particular Presbyterians — repeatedly tried to repress over two centuries discomfiting recollections of participation, alongside Catholics, in a republican rebellion in 1798. By exploring a rich variety of sources, Beiner makes it possible to closely follow the dynamics of social forgetting. His particular focus on vernacular historiography, rarely noted in official histories, reveals the tensions between professed oblivion in public and more subtle rituals of remembrance that facilitated muted traditions of forgetful remembrance, which were masked by a local culture of reticence and silencing. Throughout Forgetful Remembrance, comparative references demonstrate the wider relevance of the study of social forgetting in Northern Ireland to numerous other cases where troublesome memories have been concealed behind a veil of supposed oblivion.

Book Eliza Hamilton Dunlop

Download or read book Eliza Hamilton Dunlop written by Katie Hansord and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eliza Hamilton Dunlop (1796–1880) arrived in Sydney in 1838 and became almost immediately notorious for her poem “The Aboriginal Mother,” written in response to the infamous Myall Creek massacre. She published more poetry in colonial newspapers during her lifetime, but for the century following her death her work was largely neglected. In recent years, however, critical interest in Dunlop has increased, in Australia and internationally and in a range of fields, including literary studies; settler, postcolonial and imperial studies; and Indigenous studies. This stimulating collection of essays by leading scholars considers Dunlop's work from a range of perspectives and includes a new selection of her poetry.

Book excerpt: Archaeological evidence here is used to help build up a picture of the lives led by the people of which it is a record. The contents include a description of primitive settlements, leading up to an account of the art, trade and civilization generally of early ages prior to the Celtic invasion and up to the end of Medieval times. Two chapters take narratives from the time and analyse them against physical evidence and consider what they tell us alongside that information. Many often overlooked facts are brought to the fore and special attention is paid to the overwhelming influence of climate in shaping human destiny. Originally published in 1935, this book is as enlightening today.

Book BARBAROSSA Renaissance Corsairs

Download or read book BARBAROSSA Renaissance Corsairs written by Deniz Uzunoğlu and published by Deniz Uzunoğlu. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 919 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judaism was exiled from Spain; Islam was getting more powerful in the east, Christianity in the west that, after a thousand years of darkness it was plunged in, began to seek its truth. And the Ark of the Covenant (for some mysterious reason) chose to reappear during these troubled times after being lost for centuries following the destruction of the Temple of Solomon. In her novel, Deniz Uzunoğlu builds around the turbulent times of the Renaissance. Deniz tells the stories of two childhood friends who had fallen in love with the same woman and eventually came sword-to-sword against each other during the 15th-16th century Mediterranean in a never-ending fight culminating at the Battle of Preveza. On the one side, there is Khidr Khaireddin Barbarossa, who started life trading with a small vessel, became the Lord of the Barbary Coast, founded Algiers, and eventually rose to the rank of the Ottoman Imperial Admiral. On the other side, Andrea Doria, the famous Admiral of the Holy League, the Crusaders. Wanting to learn more about the era after the Spanish Monarchs Isabel and Fernando completed Reconquista in an effort to unite all their subjects under the wings of Christianity, William Shakespeare came from Britain to Spain to visit Miguel Cervantes Saavedra, author of the legendary novel Don Quixote. Cervantes had fought against the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto, was wounded on his left hand, and spent five years in captivity in the baths of Algiers before finally being ransomed from the Turks and returned to his homeland. The period Cervantes told Shakespeare about was when world-renowned historical figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Christopher Columbus, Piri Reis, Dragut Reis, and Niccolo Machiavelli lived. The sultans of the Ottoman Empire, Selim the Stern and Suleiman the Magnificent dominated the east, with their eyes set on Rome, and the Knights of Saint John, settled in the island of Rhodes, were striking fear into the hearts of people trading in the Mediterranean. BARBAROSSA: Renaissance Corsairs presents in a fluent style the struggles between the warriors of the time, notorious for their competence and valor, during a period when empires fought the bloodiest land and sea battles in history. Political maneuverings of the world's most extraordinary emperors were striving to expand the borders of their imperial territories, and an epic love that blossomed in the hearts of both of these men for the same woman in this fiery atmosphere, inviting the reader to embark on a breathtaking adventure.
