Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compound Remedies examines the equipment, books, and remedies of colonial Mexico City’s Herrera pharmacy—natural substances with known healing powers that formed part of the basis for modern-day healing traditions and home remedies in Mexico. Paula S. De Vos traces the evolution of the Galenic pharmaceutical tradition from its foundations in ancient Greece to the physician-philosophers of medieval Islamic empires and the Latin West and eventually through the Spanish Empire to Mexico, offering a global history of the transmission of these materials, knowledges, and techniques. Her detailed inventory of the Herrera pharmacy reveals the many layers of this tradition and how it developed over centuries, providing new perspectives and insight into the development of Western science and medicine: its varied origins, its engagement with and inclusion of multiple knowledge traditions, the ways in which these traditions moved and circulated in relation to imperialism, and its long-term continuities and dramatic transformations. De Vos ultimately reveals the great significance of pharmacy, and of artisanal pursuits more generally, as a cornerstone of ancient, medieval, and early modern epistemologies and philosophies of nature.

This book was released on 2016-11-19 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Newer Remedies, Their Therapeutic Applications and Modes of Administration The progress of pharmacology is so great that it is almost impossible for the standard works upon therapeutics to open their pages for the consideration of SO many discoveries as are being constantly made in the use of new remedial agents. Modern pathology, which necessarily includes the wide pro vince of bacteriology, has so revolutionized the world of scientific medicine, especially as regards the cause of disease, as to threaten a complete overthrow of every old system of therapeutics. A new era has certainly been opened for the study of the cause of disease, and pan: passu with the advance of path ology there is a similar progress in the study and application of new medicinal substances and measures, in all of which is seen the checkless spirit of investigation. It seems, indeed, nay, it is a fact, that no barrier can obstruct the tireless march of science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Collapse of Constitutional Remedies

Download or read book The Collapse of Constitutional Remedies written by Aziz Z. Huq and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book describes and explains the failure of the federal courts of the United States to act and to provide remedies to individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by illegal state coercion and violence. This remedial vacuum must be understood in light of the original design and historical development of the federal courts. At its conception, the federal judiciary was assumed to be independent thanks to an apolitical appointment process, a limited supply of adequately trained lawyers (which would prevent cherry-picking), and the constraining effect of laws and constitutional provision. Each of these checks quickly failed. As a result, the early federal judicial system was highly dependent on Congress. Not until the last quarter of the nineteenth century did a robust federal judiciary start to emerge, and not until the first quarter of the twentieth century did it take anything like its present form. The book then charts how the pressure from Congress and the White House has continued to shape courts behaviour-first eliciting a mid-twentieth-century explosion in individual remedies, and then driving a five-decade long collapse. Judges themselves have not avidly resisted this decline, in part because of ideological reasons and in part out of institutional worries about a ballooning docket. Today, as a result of these trends, the courts are stingy with individual remedies, but aggressively enforce the so-called "structural" constitution of the separation of powers and federalism. This cocktail has highly regressive effects, and is in urgent need of reform"--
