Book The Desert Railway

Download or read book The Desert Railway written by Brendon Judd and published by Penguin Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the untold story of the hundreds of New Zealand railwaymen - shunters, builders, engine drivers, firemen, engineers - who answered the call to construct and operate a railway network in the Western Desert during the Second World War. Overlooked in other war histories, these men played a significant role in the Allied victory in North Africa. The desert railway became a crucial strategic operation, transporting soldiers, equipment and supplies to the front line, that the Germans were determined to destroy. The various challenges they faced, from relentless bombing, to the dreaded fifty-day-long khamseen winds, to the siege of Tobruk, culminated in the second Battle of El Alamein, during which Field Marshal Montgomery stated, 'Well, now it's the railway versus Rommel.' The Desert Railway is a tribute to the courage and enterprise of these railwaymen who kept the trains running no matter what.

Book The Railways of Jamaica

Download or read book The Railways of Jamaica written by James Horsford and published by Mainline & Maritime. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jamaica Railway Company opened in 1845 with British finance and locomotives and expanded to open up the interior of the island, transporting bananas, sugar, rum, and other produce to the ports. American steam started to appear in the years prior to WW1, however, Englishman P.C. Dewhurst was the CME during the early 20th Century. The Jamaica Government Railway owned the system from 1900 and in 1960 this became the state-owned but independent Jamaica Railway Corporation. Dieselisation with British-built locos and railcars developed from the mid-1950s, indeed the JRC even bought some ex-LMS Stanier coaches from BR in 1964. Other diesels came from Canada, and France. The history is described fully and the routes are followed in detail with track diagrams and photos showing many key locations and the traffic operating. Steam & diesel locomotives, railcars and rolling stock all have their own chapters to give comprehensive coverage.

Book The NZR Steam Locomotive

Download or read book The NZR Steam Locomotive written by Sean Millar and published by Nz Railway and Locomotive Society. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1863 and 1971 the steam locomotive was the best known part of railways, and these steel kings of the steel road touched everyone{u2019}s lives. Stories abound regarding the steam locomotive and what made them special. This is a history of the steam locomotives owned by New Zealand{u2019}s national railway system. Numbering more than a thousand, they were enormously varied {u2013} ranging from little over five tons to almost 148 tons in weight, and from the occasional failure to trend-setting designs of international significance. This book combines the best available research with the largest collection of photographs on the subject ever assembled. Each locomotive is described by class with brief specifications, and information about the work each performed in New Zealand locomotive history.
