Download or read book Water Management in New Zealand s Canterbury Region written by Bryan R. Jenkins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed to achieve two major purposes. The first is to describe the developments in water management policy in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. The strategic approach, the collaborative engagement, and, the nested adaptive systems approach represent a paradigm shift in water management in New Zealand. The second is to delineate the sustainability framework that underpins the Canterbury approach. The framework is based on the concept of developing sustainability strategies to address critical failure pathways. While the focus of the book is on Canterbury, comparative applications of the framework to issues in other parts of New Zealand and international issues are proposed. The book can be used in at least two ways. The first is the application of a sustainability framework to the management of water in Canterbury region. The second is the exposition of a sustainability framework that can be applied to the management of water in a region with the application to Canterbury as an illustrative case study.

Download or read book Water Use Efficiency for Irrigated Turf and Landscape written by Geoff Connellan and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2013 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving high water use efficiency in maintaining turf, trees and landscape areas is a core responsibility of open space managers. Water Use Efficiency for Irrigated Turf and Landscape provides a logical and scientifically sound approach to irrigation in urban areas in Australia. It is based on green space delivering defined outcomes using the principles of water sensitive urban design and irrigation efficiency. The book covers all stages of the water pathway - from the source to delivery into the plant root zone. Major topics include system planning, estimating water demand, water quality, irrigation systems, soil management and irrigation performance evaluation. Clearly presented explanations are included, as well as line drawings and worked examples, and a plant water use database covering more than 250 plant species. A Water Management Planning template is included to guide water managers and operators through a process that will deliver a sound plan to achieve sustainable turf, urban trees and landscapes. Best Management Practice Irrigation principles are outlined and their implementation in open space turf and landscape situations is explained. The benefits and limitations of the various methods of delivering water to plants are covered, together with case studies and guidelines for specific horticultural situations. Methodologies to evaluate irrigated sites are included along with recommended benchmark values. The book presents the latest irrigation technology, including developments in water application, control technology and environmental sensors such as weather stations, soil moisture sensors and rain sensors.
Download or read book Farm Irrigation written by Neil Southorn and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1998-02-04 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that irrigation makes a major contribution to agricultural production, making a whole range of crops viable in an otherwise unreliable climate and helping insure against drought. However irrigation does not automatically guarantee a profit and acclaim, it is a high cost exercise, using water from increasingly scarce supplies, and contributes to environmental concerns of the community. Many of the pressures facing some irrigators have been caused by a lack of understanding in the past of best practices necessary in design, installation and management.Alternative methods of irrigation are presented, emphasising the characteristics of each that may make them suitable (or unsuitable) for particular situations. The range of crops under irrigation is very wide, and so too is the range of methods available to get water to them. Horticultural crops are included as well as broadacre crops. This section is followed by technical information of the various components that make up an irrigation system, and their installation.Irrigation is concerned with providing the optimum soil moisture conditions for plant growth. So to is drainage, in that too much water in the soil will retard growth. Many of the concepts surrounding irrigation are applicable to a consideration of drainage, so the book discusses that technology as well.

Download or read book Agricultural and Horticultural Engineering written by Clifford J Studman and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural and Horticultural Engineering: Principles, Models, Systems, and Techniques focuses on the developments in agriculture and horticulture, including the role of engineers in employing measures in the management of plants, animals, and machinery. The book first offers information on the process of surveying, including tape, compass, and aerial surveying, leveling, barometric leveling with the aneroid, plane tabling, and electronic distance measurement and electronic total. The text then takes a look at models of the environment, material properties, and the relationship between stress and strain. The publication examines workshop methods and hydraulics. Topics include soldering, electric arc welding, low temperature brazing, welding using oxygen-acetylene apparatus, hydrodynamics, and water supply requirements. The text also reviews electricity and electronics and power and thermal systems, as well as alternating voltage supplies, electrical motors, electrical safety, power and energy consumption, and the fundamental principles of electronics. The manuscript is a dependable reference for engineers and readers interested in agricultural and horticultural engineering.

Download or read book Approaches to Water Sensitive Urban Design written by Ashok Sharma and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaches to Water Sensitive Urban Design: Potential, Design, Ecological Health, Economics, Policies and Community Perceptions covers all aspects on the implementation of sustainable storm water systems for urban and suburban areas whether they are labeled as WSUD, Low Impact Development (LID), Green Infrastructure (GI), Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) or the Sponge City Concept. These systems and approaches are becoming an integral part of developing water sensitive cities as they are considered very capable solutions in addressing issues relating to urbanization, climate change and heat island impacts in dealing with storm water issues. The book is based on research conducted in Australia and around the world, bringing in perspectives in an ecosystems approach, a water quality approach, and a sewer based approach to stormwater, all of which are uniquely covered in this single resource. - Presents a holistic examination of the current knowledge on WSUD and storm water, including water quality, hydrology, social impacts, economic impacts, ecosystem health, and implementation guidelines - Includes additional global approaches to WSUD, including SUDS, LID, GI and the Sponge City Concept - Covers the different perspectives from Australia (ecosystem based), the USA (water quality based) and Europe (sewer based) - Addresses storm water management during the civil construction stage when much of the ecological damage can be done
