Book excerpt: It has never been more important for directors and management to have a clear understanding of directors' duties. Not only do we have a new, empowered, regulator in the form of the Financial Markets Authority, but the Courts are generating new case law, in the wake of the global financial crisis and finance company failures. This new edition of Duties and Responsibilities of Directors and Company Secretaries in New Zealand sets out in a clear and concise manner the duties imposed by law on directors and includes new commentary on the evolution of the interpretation by the courts and the regulators of these matters. Comprehensive indexes, cases and statute tables ensure relevant information is easily located.

Book excerpt: Frontiers were not confined to the bush, backwoods, or borderlands. Towns and cities at the farthest reaches of empire were crucial to the settler colonial project. Yet the experiences of Indigenous peoples in these urban frontiers have been overshadowed by triumphant narratives of progress. This book explores the lives of Indigenous peoples and settlers in two Pacific Rim cities Victoria, British Columbia, and Melbourne, Australia. Built on Indigenous lands and overtaken by gold rushes, these cities emerged between 1835 and 1871 in significantly different locations, yet both became cross-cultural and segregated sites of empire. This innovative study traces how these spaces, and the bodies in them, were transformed, sometimes in violent ways, creating new spaces and new polities.

Download or read book A Simple Nullity written by David V. Williams and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the New Zealand Supreme Court ruled on Wi Parata v the Bishop of Wellington in 1877, the judges infamously dismissed the relevance of the Treaty of Waitangi. During the past 25 years, judges, lawyers, and commentators have castigated this &“simple nullity&” view of the treaty. The infamous case has been seen as symbolic of the neglect of Maori rights by settlers, the government, and New Zealand law. In this book, the Wi Parata case—the protagonists, the origins of the dispute, the years of legal back and forth—is given a fresh look, affording new insights into both Maori-Pakeha relations in the 19th century and the legal position of the treaty. As relevant today as they were at the time of the case ruling, arguments about the place of Indigenous Maori and Pakeha settlers in New Zealand are brought to light.
