Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New-York Journal of Medicine, and the Collateral Sciences, 1854, Vol. 12 With this number we commence the Twenty-second Volume (twelfth of the New Series) of the new-york journal or medicine and the Cous'rsnan Sermons; and, in doing so, we embrace the opportunity od'sted of assuring our readers and contributors of the increasing pros parity of the work. In the history of medical periodical literature in this city, we doubt if an instance can be found where so much success, under so many embarrassing circumstances, has attended the develop ment of a work. Based upon the only foundation which can here on sure success, an unreserved and honorable independence, its incep tion and growth thus far has been healthy, as is evidenced in a steadily increasing inquiry at home and abroad for the work, and a list of con tributors second to no similar work published in this country. It is not for us to say whether the increasing patronage is owing to the earnest devotion of the editors and contributors to its interests, or to the peculiar advantages which it enjoys, coming 'as it does from the metropolis of America, or to all of these circumstances combined; but this much we can say, that the conciousness that the works meets with the approbation of those for whom it is intended, shall continue to throw around it that zeal and devotion which shall sustain, if not in crease its reputation as a truthful mirror of the progress of practical medicine and surgery. In I ndia and China, it appears to have been long known and practised, according to peculiar modes. It was introduced into Constantinople from the Mama, at a time when it was in general use, not only in Asiatic countries, but also in Barbary. 11 was stated to Dr. Russel, who resided long in Aleppo, that at Bagdad and Bassora, when the small-pox appeared in any dis triet of these cities, it was the custom to give notice by a public crier, in order that those who were so inclined might take the opportunity to have their children inoculated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1876, Vol. 24 It has therefore been difficult in all cases to decide how much the modified appearances they present have been the result of altered action, or merely variations that belong to the natural life of the substance. The determination of what constitutes the normal condi tion is, then, a matter of the first importance, and it is in this direction that the present inquiries have been made. The present essay is designed to embody a series of experimental researches upon the general subject of connective substances, with the view of determining some of the more important facts that have been matters Of controversy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, Vol. 8: October, 1868-March, 1869 These points were urged in consultation, but some great fears of Caesa rean section being expressed, I proposed to try and demonstrate whether any thing could at all readily be accomplished by instrumental means. I first tried faithfully to apply a pair of delicately-made Hodge's obstetric forceps to the head, but it was a failure, there being no adequate room for the introduction and adaptation of the second blade. I then tried faith fully, during half an hour, to reduce the head piecemeal with Meigs's craniotomy forceps, but there was so little room in the vagina and cervix for both the hand and instrument, that the progress was lamentably slow. To my mind the proposition was clear that many hours would be required for piecemeal delivery, that an anaesthetic would be absolutely necessary, and that the result of prolonged manipulation would be fearful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1874, Vol. 20 Here is a result reached at the end of seven or eight years, by which this man's bladder is at last in the way of being regularly relieved without painful and damaging effort. I trust he will be saved from stone, although he did incur the danger of retention as I had foretold; for he can empty his bladder thoroughly now, and also wash it out with warm water at will, if necessary. But it is very clear to me, after observing his case through all these years, that if the patient had gone to work when he first applied to me for relief, and learned within the year to help himself with the catheter, he would have saved himself both time and torment, and that at this moment his bladder and kidneys would be in better con dition to serve him for the next ten years. He concludes his introductory as follows: As to those gentlemen who will neither read nor reason, but practise at a venture, and sport with the lives and limbs of their fellow-crea tures, I can only, with Dr. Huxham, advise them seriously to peruse the sixth commandment, which is, Thou shall not kill.'
