Book The New System of Gynaecology Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New System of Gynaecology Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Watts Eden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New System of Gynaecology, Vol. 1 of 3 The plan of this work was laid down and many of the Articles were actually written when the European War broke out in August 1914. The difficulty of completing our task amid the many preoccupations of these times has been very great, alike for the Editors, the Contributing Authors, and the Publishers, although we have never wavered in our determination to carry out our project. The work was originally contemplated because in the opinion of the Editors the time had arrived when it was necessary to put into concrete form the great changes through which Gynaecological Practice in this country has passed during the last ten years. The change may be briefly summarized by saying that Gynaecology has become definitely a special branch of surgery, in close touch with abdominal surgery generally, and the old view that the gynaecologist is a physician not a surgeon is no longer tenable. In consequence of this development the interests of the gynaecologist have necessarily broadened. Pelvic disease in women is frequently associated, in the relation of cause or of effect, with diseases of the gastro-intestinal and urinary canals; the gynaecologist has accordingly realized that he must be prepared to deal with whatever condition he may find on opening the abdomen for the relief of disease apparently of pelvic origin. And further, he must be familiar with the special methods which are employed in the investigation of such diseases as those of the kidney, the bladder, and the rectum. Diseases of the female breast fall so obviously into the province of the gynae oologist that no explanation of the inclusion of this subject is called for. The vermiform appendix possesses relationships of unique intimacy with the pelvic Organs, and there is no doubt that cases of appendicitis in women very frequently come under the care of the gynaecologist. During pelvic operations, injury to the intestines necessitating enterorrhaphy or enterectomy frequently occur, with which it is quite obvious that he must be prepared to deal. And further, during convalescence from abdominal operations, intestinal complications may arise which call for a sound knowledge of intestinal surgery. Book A System of Gynecology Vol 1

Download or read book A System of Gynecology Vol 1 written by Matthew D. Mann and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Gynecology, Vol. 1: By American Authors In all departments of science the largest results are to be obtained by division of labor and combination of effort. In Medicine this is especially true, and the favor with which the profession has greeted recent systems of Practice and Surgery, concentrating the experience of leading men on each subject, shows that such a plan of composition is more satisfactory than the effort of a single author to treat exhaustively all the details of an extensive branch of practice. By a careful preliminary survey of the ground, and the assignment of each subdivision to a practitioner who has made it the special subject of study, omissions are avoided, every article is authoritative, and each is treated with the fulness to which its importance entitles it. Gynecology has now grown to an extent which requires for its thorough treatment this co-operation of representative men; and it is eminently fitting that the science which is in so great a degree of American origin should be thus presented by American practitioners. The labors of the Editor have been principally confined to the selection of contributors and the assignment of subjects, and it is with no little pride that he refers to the list of eminent gentlemen whose cooperation has secured in advance the position which the work must assume as the leading authority on its subject. The common effort has been to render each article not only full and complete, but thoroughly practical, special regard being paid to the needs of the general practitioner as well as to those of the specialist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this energetic new study, Wendy Mitchinson traces medical perspectives on the treatment of women in Canada in the first half of the twentieth century. It is based on in-depth research in a variety of archival sources, including Canadian medical journals, textbooks used in many of Canada’s medical faculties, popular health literature, patient case records, and hospital annual reports, as well as interviews with women who lived during the period. Each chapter examines events throughout a woman’s life cycle – puberty, menstruation, sexuality, marriage and motherhood – and the health problems connected to them – infertility, birth control and abortion, gynaecology, cancer, nervous disorders, and menopause. Mitchinson provides a sensitive understanding of the physician/patient relationship, the unease of many doctors about the bodies of their female patients, as well as overriding concerns about the relationship between female and male bodies. Throughout the book, Mitchinson takes care to examine the roles and agency of both patients and practitioners as diverse individuals.
