Book The New Right

Download or read book The New Right written by Hon. Samuel M. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Right: A Plea for Fair Play Through, a More Just Social Order I have no apology to offer for writing a book. I desire to explain that I have been led to do it, not by reason of a belief that I have a peculiar fitness as a teacher of teachers, but because of the feeling that in some measure I have a message for the plain people, of whom I am one. During the last few years I have come to see that there is a divine purpose respecting all humanity, all-inclusive, all-pervading, and that in due time order and harmony are to be wrought out of the present chaotic social conditions that surround us. Though I cannot fully argue it out, still I am deeply impressed with the belief that the people of these United States are to lead the people of the world into a new conception of the purpose of government, the meaning of liberty and justice, and into a larger realization of freedom during the next twenty-five years than the most fanciful imagination has yet pictured. To set forth this belief in order, to give the reason why it is entertained, the processes by which the programme may be wrought out, and to lead those who shall read these pages to pin their faith more firmly to the fundamental, imperishable fact of the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man, is the purpose of this volume. I believe that I can truly say that the best thing in the book is the contribution of my friend and co-worker for Equality, who has kindly contributed the chapter on "Co-operation and Profit-Sharing." If you read that and digest a very small part of it, I shall feel that you have gotten the full cost of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning author’s stunning trilogy of American history, spanning the birth of the Constitution to the final days of the Cold War. In these three volumes, Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winner James MacGregor Burns chronicles with depth and narrative panache the most significant cultural, economic, and political events of American history. In The Vineyard of Liberty, he combines the color and texture of early American life with meticulous scholarship. Focusing on the tensions leading up to the Civil War, Burns brilliantly shows how Americans became divided over the meaning of Liberty. In The Workshop of Democracy, Burns explores more than a half-century of dramatic growth and transformation of the American landscape, through the addition of dozens of new states, the shattering tragedy of the First World War, the explosion of industry, and, in the end, the emergence of the United States as a new global power. And in The Crosswinds of Freedom, Burns offers an articulate and incisive examination of the US during its rise to become the world’s sole superpower—through the Great Depression, the Second World War, the Cold War, and the rapid pace of technological change that gave rise to the “American Century.”

Book The Search for Social Salvation

Download or read book The Search for Social Salvation written by Gary Scott Smith and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their studies of social Christianity, scholars of American religion have devoted critical attention to a group of theologically liberal pastors, primarily in the Northeast. Gary Scott Smith attempts to paint a more complete picture of the movement. Smith's ambitious and thorough study amply demonstrates how social Christianity--which included blacks, women, Southerners, and Westerners--worked to solve industrial, political, and urban problems; reduce racial discrimination; increase the status of women; curb drunkenness and prostitution; strengthen the family; upgrade public schools; and raise the quality of public health. In his analysis of the available scholarship and case studies of individuals, organizations, and campaigns central to the movement, Smith makes a convincing case that social Christianity was the most widespread, long-lasting, and influential religious social reform movement in American history.

This work details how the Golden Rule ethic and a technology-driven global consciousness are causing epic shifts in our economic and governing systems. The evolution from nation-state capitalism to a collaborative economy with judicial governance is proving that prosperity is compatible with peace. With ten case studies of successful "Golden Rule" organizations and an innovative study of the reciprocal ethic, this book provides accessible, thought-provoking analysis of rapid worldwide change and forecasts a future of freedom, purpose and hope.

  • Author : Ariane Liazos

Download or read book Reforming the City written by Ariane Liazos and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most American cities are now administered by appointed city managers and governed by councils chosen in nonpartisan, at-large elections. In the early twentieth century, many urban reformers claimed these structures would make city government more responsive to the popular will. But on the whole, the effects of these reforms have been to make citizens less likely to vote in local elections and local governments less representative of their constituents. How and why did this happen? Ariane Liazos examines the urban reform movement that swept through the country in the early twentieth century and its unintended consequences. Reformers hoped to make cities simultaneously more efficient and more democratic, broadening the scope of what local government should do for residents while also reconsidering how citizens should participate in their governance. However, they increasingly focused on efficiency, appealing to business groups and compromising to avoid controversial and divisive topics, including the voting rights of African Americans and women. Liazos weaves together wide-ranging nationwide analysis with in-depth case studies. She offers nuanced accounts of reform in five cities; details the activities of the National Municipal League, made up of prominent national reformers and political scientists; and analyzes quantitative data on changes in the structures of government in over three hundred cities. Reforming the City is an important study for American history and political development, with powerful insights into the relationships between scholarship and reform and between the structures of city government and urban democracy.
