Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Republic, Vol. 1 of 3 The conditions to be deplored and that attract, and force themselves on, our attention are found to be the outgrowth of inequitable distribution of wealth - a condition of great wealth concentration on the one hand and that of poverty on the other - such as doubtless suggested, to the mind of a great writer, the title of the work, Progress and Poverty. The citizen, who puts a proper estimate on the mental qualities of the American peo ple and who has reflected on the nature of, and the laws governing, political progress, will never fear but that these conditions Will be righted sooner or later and in one way or another; but every one should, at the same time, feel that he ought to take part in solving the problems call ing for solution and assist in the establishment of the proper conditions, and with this end in view, this volume is offered to my countrymen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Starnes radical interpretation of the long-recognized affinity of Thomas More’s Utopia and Plato’s Republic confirms the intrinsic links between the two works. Through commentary on More’s own introduction to Book I, the author shows the Republic is everywhere present as the model of the “best commonwealth,” which More must first discredit as the root cause of the dreadful evils in the collapsing political situation of sixteenth-century Europe. Starnes demonstrates how More, once having shorn the Republic of what was applicable to a society that had for a thousand years accepted and been moved by the Christian revelation, then “Christianized” it to arrive at one of the earliest and most coherent accounts of the ideal modern state: the description of Utopia in Book II. Knowing this radically new view of a long-recognized position may be questioned, the author has included a criticism and appreciation of the other major lines of interpretation concerning More’s Utopia.

Download or read book The New Republic Vol 1 of 3 written by H. Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Republic, Vol. 1 of 3 During the past decade there has been a vast number of books, and almost a surfeit of general literature, treating of the various subjects connected with political economy and suggesting various changes and reforms in our political system - changes that might tend to correct abuses and prevent a drift of our government and institutions away from the solid moorings upon which it was planted by our forefathers; and, believing that I may have something that will interest the curious and perhaps instruct the less learned in politics, I offer for the consideration of my countrymen the New Republic. I hope the title I have chosen will not suggest the thought that I herein advocate revolutionary measures, for I know too well the conservative disposition of the American people to expect them to be interested in theories that call for the adoption of totally new experiments in legislation. Evolution, rather, must be the order of progress, especially when the political system is well grounded in correct principles, as I take it to be the case in the United States. Book excerpt: Written by some of today’s leading science fiction writers, these tales sweep us into a world where the only laws are cunning, force, and power—and only the bravest, craziest, and deadliest dare to tread. Here mercs and smugglers, gangsters and warriors fight toe to toe, side by side, and behind each other’s backs in the backwaters of a universe ripped apart by war. On Zelos II a man and a woman are held prisoner in a dark cell, each fighting in their own way for survival at the hands of Imperial captors—and a chance for escape that could cost one of them their life. On the tortured landscape of Ryloth, Fenig Nabon awaits a ship of women warriors to complete a dangerous deal: the smuggling of a troupe of dancers to the homeworld of the Hutts—only to get more than she bargained for. And in a stunning novella written especially for this collection by Hugo Award–winning, New York Times bestselling author Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole, Senator Garm Bel Iblis, believed dead at the hands of an Imperial assassin, teams up with Hal Horn in a duel against the Empire’s most dangerous agent. At stake are the plans for a terrifying new weapon called the Death Star—and the fate of both the Empire and the New Republic.
