Book The New Proposed Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders

Download or read book The New Proposed Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders written by DA. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the research conducted for the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), a set of new testing methods to characterize the rheological, failure, and durability properties of asphalt binders has been developed. These methods utilize testing devices that are either completely new or have been used before only for research purposes. The methods also call for measuring mechanical response parameters that are not very common for asphalt pavement engineers nor for many asphalt producers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the following points: (1) The viscoelastic nature of asphalts and its relation to pavement performance; (2) the types of conventional measurements that are used now and the fundamental problems with them; (3) the concept behind selecting the new test methods and the new characteristic properties; and (4) how the new measured properties compare to the conventional properties. The paper addresses these points by providing theoretical-conceptual background about the conventional and new tests and by comparing new and conventional data measured for a large number of asphalts that vary in their source and their grade. The comparison clearly identifies the advantages of the new testing methods and the need to implement the proposed testing and specification system.

Book Characterizing the Asphalt Aggregate Mixtures Using Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders

Download or read book Characterizing the Asphalt Aggregate Mixtures Using Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders written by M. Zeng and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling techniques were employed to establish the relationship between the rheological properties (G* and ?) of asphalt binders and asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Results of this study indicate that the complex modulus and phase angle of the mixture can be represented by the same parameters obtained from the binder under the conditions of material linearity. This relationship is independent of frequency (or loading time) and temperature. For typical dense graded asphalt mixtures, the relationship is not significantly affected by the characteristics of both the asphalt binder and the aggregate. The relationship between the complex moduli of the asphalt binder and mixture can be mathematically modeled by the generalized power function. This function is more precise than the Heukelom and Klomp model (HK expression) and bilogarithm linear model (BL approximation), particularly at low and high modulus values. The generalized power function can differentiate asphalt binder as a viscoelastic liquid and asphalt mixture as a viscoelastic solid under the action of shear loading. The relationship of the phase angles, as an integrated part of rheological property of a viscoelastic material, between asphalt binders and mixtures can be modeled by a modified haversine function. This function completes the modeling of rheological properties as a whole for the first time and also reflects the fundamental material difference between the binder and the mixture in viscoelastic theory. Characterizing the asphalt mixture properties through the binder properties not only can save tremendous efforts in testing an asphalt mixture, but also can simplify the pavement performance prediction.

Book Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders

Download or read book Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders written by Ali Behnood and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Superpave specifications and equipment, introduced in 1993, represented a major advancement with respect to offering a better understanding of the behavior and characteristics of asphalt binders based on their rheological properties. However, the Superpave high-temperature test protocol has been shown to be inadequate for characterizing the high-temperature behavior (rutting resistance) of asphalt binders, particularly polymer modified ones. Recently, a specification based on the Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) test has been proposed to address the shortcomings of the Superpave high-temperature binder specifications. This study aims to investigate the merits of implementing the MSCR test and specification as a replacement for the conventional high-temperature testing in the Performance Graded (PG) system.

Book Development of a Physical Property Specification for Asphalt rubber Binder

Download or read book Development of a Physical Property Specification for Asphalt rubber Binder written by Ron Reese and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of projects incorporating asphalt-rubber binders has been inconsistent. Thus, a method was needed to provide an understanding of binder physical properties associated with the desirable performance and to quantify them for specification purposes. It was proposed to use the capabilities of a dynamic shear rheometer for comparing the asphalt-rubber binder properties with project performance data to determine the potential for rheological specifications on job samples of the binder. Representative binders from six dense-graded and gap-graded hot mix projects were analyzed.

Book Standard Method of Test for Determining the Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binder Using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer DSR

Download or read book Standard Method of Test for Determining the Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binder Using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer DSR written by and published by . This book was released on with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This test method covers the determination of the dynamic shear modulus and phase angle of asphalt binder when tested in dynamic (oscillatory) shear using parallel plate test geometry. It is applicable to asphalt binders having dynamic shear modulus values in the range from 100 Pa to 10 MPa. This range in modulus is typically obtained between 6 and 88°C at an angular frequency of 10 rad/s. This test method is intended for determining the linear viscoelastic properties of asphalt binders as required for specification testing and is not intended as a comprehensive procedure for the full characterization of the viscoelastic properties of asphalt binder. This standard is appropriate for unaged material or material aged in accordance with T 240 and R 28.
