Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Playground: Or Wanderings in Algeria It seems but fair to warn travellers who may be meditating a journey to Algiers or through Algeria, that there has been a great change since the autumn of 1879, when we crossed from Marseilles to Algiers. The Transatlantic Steamship Companys services have now been organized, and I have been informed by those who have made trial of these vessels that they are a vast improvement upon the old Valery and Messageries Maritimes Lines. Not only is the passage effected far more quickly, but the steamers are much larger, and more powerful, so that the inconvenience of the seapassage is reduced to a minimum. You may now pass from Marseilles to Algiers, to Oran, to Tunis, or from Port Vendres to Algiers by this line, or along the coast from Algiers to Bona. I may add that I have received a communication from Messrs. Cook's firm, by which I learn that some of the Algerine hotels of which I cannot speak from experience are really good, and deserve public favour. The Europe, at Algiers, is described as clean and comfortable. The Hotel d'Orient, at Blidah, is highly recommended.
